Study Is Made Of Brown Beats

NEW YORK (UP) Concerning the f]<»ck of winged travelers who fill the spring skies and krtow-precisely where they're going, science still doesn't know how they do it and the newest scientific effort to find out only made the puzzle more fascinat*ng. The effort was with big brown bats. They were observed performing amazing f eats of pi*. ision navigating < ver long distances, which surpassed those the migratory birds perform every spring and fall a.s part of the routines of their existence. Birds are known lo depend at least in par t of what they see nd

home.

Elizabeth Smith and Woodrow Goodpaster. zoologists of Pennsylvania State University caught 155 of them in a Cincinnati attic, put them into cages, put the cages into the trunk of an automobile, and drove 450 miles north, to Pilgrim, Mich. There they turned the bats loose. In a month, three were recaptured. in the home roost back in Cincinnati and within three months, four more were retaken

Meanwhile, Miss Smith end Goodpaster had hauled 18 other bats to Reelfoot Lake, Tenn.,;

of these bats were recaptured in their Cincinnati attic. All the bats had been tagged for- identification before they were released, and so the identification was

positive.

Reporting to the American Association for the Advancement of Sc ience, the scientists pointed out that other bats probably got home being detected. But the most provocative part of their- experiment was their classifications of their bats as to their ages. FIRST 'SMOKING' MICE—Dr. Cecilie Leuchtenberger of Western Reserve university, Cleveland, examines a mouse used in an experiment to determine effect of cigaret smoke on the windpipe of mice. This is the first experiment in which effect of cigaret smoke has been tried on mice. The apparatus from which she removed the mouse contains a compartment through which smoke is drawn, and also a "pure’' compartment for control groups. Dr. Leuchtenberger found that the majority of the mice exposed to cigaret smoke developed an unusual form of bronchitis in which minute surface cells of the bronchia showed evidence of proliferation and other signs usually connected with malignant disorders. Nut no invasive type of cancer. (International)
