'Motor Dej.artment. The NewsTimes. What iri the object of a clutch brake.? IMease exjdain its Use. A clutch brake is a device to check the momentum of 'he clutch when chanimr speeds. Usually when the clutch is disen.ared it ter.ds to spin for some time, due to tlie momentum received from the encdne. The brake rubs on the f hitch shaft or drum in such a manner as to reduce its mmen-

mosphere. To the present no practical system that will come within

the purse of the average household-!

.r has been devised, but experiments alone; that line are, being carried out

by a number of corporations.

London uses son coai ia ro noence to anthracite and within an ,j hour after o'clock in the morn in it, j j

when Lt.ndon servants arise, the air

is tilled with lone: sjurals of smoke j

from countless chimneypots. The sky soon is entirely obscured.

Wire wheels are u-u.-lly Installed over false hu's and lo.-kf d in po.ution l y lock nuts It is advisable to inspect these lock nuts frequently and tirhteu same. If wheel becomes loose on the false hub it will creak and in time injure the fittings.

It is well to check up the alignment of the front wheels occasionally. Sliding the wheels airamst the curb is a frequent occurrenet. It does not require a heavy blow to bend one of the s'eerin-; arms slightly. When this is done the wheels become out of line, and as a result the front tires will suffer unnecessary additional wear, due to the misalignment of the wh els.

In a great many wheel bear ings there are l'clt washers, even though they may not be plainly aj'parent. lb-cause they are jrut there to keep the lubricant in and the dirt out care should be taken to see that they are replaced if it becomes nectssary to remove a wheel for any cause.

On all cars having the rear wheels secured to tapered shaft3 care should be taken to see that the hubs are kept wedged up lightly on thetaper end of the axle uhaft by means of the nuts. The rear huh taps should be taken off and the lock nuts moved up as snugly as possible without injuring the threads. If this is not done the hub will work loose on the shaft uid by rubbing against the key. will certainly spread the key-way in a comparatively short time.
