We notice that in some sections ef
tho country where the rust has affected the oats, during the present season,
the crops thus destroyed wer not the
only loss which farmers have sustained thereby. As an instance in Kussel
county, Alabama, it is said that some of tho farmers have lost considerable
utock by turning them into oats field
injured by rust. Not only have thy thtis lost hogs, but horses and mules
are reported to have died from eating
of oaU so affected. As a portion of
the oats of Preble county havo been rendered worthless from rust, it might
be well for our farmers to exercise
iome degree of caution, lest they may
incur additional loss, as in the case
referred to above. By the way, wc believe that Oats rust, in this county, is rather unprecedented; at least we hear some of our oldest farmers so kpeak. Eaton Register.

Iloyhood nrcollections. When I was a hoy, residing with my father, in Amherst Co., Va., the home cottage wts tttuatedm Peddler Creek, a tributary of James' River. It was supplied by springs and rivulets gushing from the Blue Ridge Mountains, at whose baso it quietly flowed along. Sometimes its course was precipitated through chasms, then bounding and leaping over precipices, but ever rolling gladly on its way. In this stream fish of various kinds were found, but especially did it abound in trout. When daylight be
gan to come forth in the morning, on the tops of the mountain the sun would first make its appearance, and on the west side of the house, high above the quiet valley, the leaves would appear beautifully tinged with the bright beams of the sun, whose brilliant rays were at the same time slowly biirmounting the hills on the east, until within an hour or two its benign influence would be felt in the valley. In certain localities along these mountains the sun had scarcely ever shown; and in such places forty or fifty years ago, there dwelt the bear, the panther, the wolf and wild cat, and a great variety of poisonous reptiles. These were often a great terror to the children, and sometimes the stoutest heart quaikxl at their approach. Of these the rattlesnake and copperhead were the most dreaded. One day, while passing through the wood, I came upon a blacksnake, which was several feet in kngth. This kind was usually called "racers." I have not seen anv of them iu this country. 1 gave it a light tap on tho head, and then grasped it around the neck, its head and fangs extending a little beyond th little finger. It would coil and twist itself, and then bring its tail upon the ground, producing a report like the crack of a small whip. I will now relate a circumstance
ing my father of the rheumatism long afterward. On one occasion, when returning
from school, I saw a rattlesnake Iving 9 O
dead with a squirrel, also dead, in his
mouth. Tin head of the squirred was hanging out of the snake's mouth, and its hind feet and legs hanging out at full length Whinl the reptile's h.ad through its neck. The snake had uni.i . i. iii

squirrel, in an effort to release itself, had forced its feet and legs through tho snake's neck. One time, when mv brothers were out coon-hunting, the dogs commenced barking about forty roils from the house. They knew at once what was up, and called for father and myself t" bring over the gun. Wc hastened to the scene of action, but were not expecting a den of bears so near the bouse. 1 ran right up to the entrance of the den, when lady bruin came out close to me, and stood facing me. About that time then; was a whiteheaded boy took the back track in double quitk time. Contrary to the usual custom of such animals, she ran off and left her. young. Father tho't it useless to shoot at her, as there was but a very small load in the gun. I
went into the den and captured three of the cubs, which I esteemed as a fine
prize. C. (ilootny Itcflrctiotn of a Southern Disunion Orcnn.

has followed lianl upon Neu Hanipihhirc, nl goni with a rush against Slaverv: wliile, mikirnlest cut of all, St. Louis, a .South-Ji n city of a iSotithern Stitto, ha, at its recent municipal election, reiterated its scnir-abelitie:i sentiments by the election of tlu Fire Democratic ticket. Truly, the Kansas measure has been a disastrous blow to the South. Intended, as its advocates proclaimed, to settle the question of Slavery, and quiet agitation, it has generally renewed discord, strengthened free soil, an I hopelessly divided the only party that claimed au odor of nationality. We arc afraid that those Spring elections arc portions of gloomier tidings hereafter. Wc apprehend that Pennsylvania, und Illinois, and Indiana, which bv unrivalled tact an I tinwearied exertion were saved in from falling ir.to th Free Soil quagmire, will return to their wallow, ami that before the expiration of the present year everv non-sdavcholdiiv' State in th.1 Union, with the possible exception of California, vill rally under the victorious standard of Elack Ilepublicanism. The South then will be in a certain and absolute minoritv, ami may vainly look to the North for sympathy or succor. When that peniod arrives, wc shall be glad to learn of those who arc constantly elinning into our ears their devotion to tho Union, what course th-n propose to pursue? Shall we submit, and trust to the justice or the mercy of the Northern antislavery men, for the preservation of our lights? Shall we remain in the Union until an opportunity is presented of finally testing their repeated as surances that no more Slave States hall be admitted? Or shall we make preparations for a criis that seems inevitable, and taking our stand npon principle, put forth our firm resolve to re ist any overt act of aggression? The time is not distant when these question may be pertinently asked. In the interim, let the Southern nationalists revolve them at their leisure, for an answer will be shortly reeiuired."
