With the advancing prosperity of the north, and the wheeling into line of tue south; des pite all grumblers and old women" croakers, wc easily see how and when the national debt can be paid with credit and honor to ourselves. And as all the nations of Europe are trugg'ing to found Ripublies like our own, and while the whole world i ringing with the hum of busy industry and teeiu;ng withvaluable inventions we certainly show our good sense in being honest and just even soraciuing oi a sacrifice for the present Of all the heavy blows which Republican orators, and financiers, and statesmen have dealt to the despondent Democratic suggestion of repudiation, that of showing how and when the national debt will be paid is the most telling. When we leam as we do, from unquestioned author ity. that the receipts ui ler General Grant exceed by millions those of a like period under his predecessor ; and when we call to rnind the large decrease of the national debt each nonth ; and also remember that the annual production of the counti v amounts to 7.000,000,000, that is, 823,000,000 for every working day of theyear.and that ihe na'.ioi a deb?, m proportion to our population, less than ;that with which our I tithnrc ,,.n rt.. . aa. -'ut, uuv vi nie nut oi 1118 Revolution every dollar of which was paitlwe feel that those persons .! 4..1I. -1 A. The gain from the rigid ystem of economy inaugurated bv the present Administration, and from a more faithful collection of tax, will undoubtedly exceed 830 000,000. Taking the last year's bais of 848,000,000, to guide us, we may expect with this addition of 845,000,000 a year, a surplus next June of 893,000,000. But in reality 1 the surplus of last year was reduced by the payment of $18,000,000 on extra bounties, and the payment of 89,500,000 in currency for Alaska. These sums we shall gain each year hereafter, and adding them to our account we get a total of 8120,000000 as our surplus revenue for the current fiscal year. How shall this grand surplus be applied f For the present, we believe that a fixed annual amount of 800,000,000 should i be devoted to reducing the national debt, and all the rest should go to reducing the taxes. This policjwill in time prevail, and with continued frugality and faithful collection of the revenue, so as to make it yield, as atpreseut, a minimum surplus of 8100,000,000, over all expenditures to b applied to the naO O . a aa aw tionai (lebt, the debt will be reduced in eight years to 1,200,000,000. Then an annual investment of this same snrplus of 8100,000,000, at six per cent in a sinking fund, will extinguish the entire principal of our debt in less tLan fifteen years. But suppose we take simply the surplus revenue of$50,000,000 which was annually co' ectable under tbe Johnson administration, and apply this regularly to the reduction of the debt Suppose, also, that, taking the gain under the present administration purely from economy of ex pense and more faithful collection of taxes a probable amount of 830 C00,000, we reduce by this amount the taxes, how tuen shall we come oat? The annual investment ol 850,000,000 at six per cent, in a sinking fond, will extinguish the natiocal debt in twenty-three years Between these two periods we have the exact time when the present public debt of the United States will be extinguished. So much for the policy of Drains, frugality, fidelity, and national prosperity as opposed to that of stupidity, recklessness, repudiation and nationa- poverty and rain. CRAwrsi8viu.i, Ind. Mkssi. Editors. A visit just made to lbis Readily growing little city of Central Indiana has suggested some thincs wbich may be of interest und use o aouie of your readers. On the way down we had a rare treat in the reading of Henry Ward Beecher's sermon on tatting to be rich, a timely, pointed and s; bring discussion of .hal theme. If anybody thinks that this inexIi aiict thlsi Tif-."ir'lwr a w 1 1 if 1'vinir tTQtr indedj is QrifliQg away from bible reMba and doctrioe, let him read tMs discourse and feei the solemn power with , - which he brings iie great word to bear apon the subject. But a brief passage in the sermon has a special application to a form of unchristian zeal which domctimcs prevails in tbe Christian Churches. It is tbat of getting mem jere away from other churches. The preacher characterizes It as church stealing and justly is it Ums characterized. It is the taking of that which does not belong to the proselyte any more than does the stolen property to jthe thief. And besides the disgrace of such conduct before the world, there is the waste of energy and persuasion and influence in weakeniug anrt impeding the cause of Christ rather than the opposite. For what is gained by the disturbance of church relations in one quarter for the advantage of another In the removal ol a member from one church to another. Tbe aggregate strength of the church is not inereased ; and the strength and skd which tbould be employed in making con verts from tne world is thus wasted. Be sides such conduct results in the banish ment from the heart of that spirit without which there can be no real progress in christian life or christian work. And the same is true of the sabbath . , , . . . . . schools, it is no more right to intiuce scholars already belonging to one scboo' to leave it and join another than it is to take by the exertion of sundry, secret in doences a menu be r from one church to another. It is a species of thieving that is dishonorable and injurious. Christians as tbe children of the glorious God, should disdain such a practice. It Is not worthy of such high pretensions and will meet with the desired disapprobation. If anywhere a lofty spirit ot honor and generosity should prevail it is in tbe christian . i ,4 ... , . , . choreh U ÜMÜA mnPir ch" n1 worir-

The spirit of the session wan remarkable for its harmony and zeal. Tbe prayer meeting of Saturday morning was extended without interruption until uoon ; and its pre cioos experiences will never be forgotten by those present. Christian work of al1 kinds was discussed and plans formed for pushing on with increased enersy. The synodical sermon preached by Dr. Rice of Lafayette, was a masterly effort. The subject was the Resurrection. This was held to be the very citadel or Christian faitb, and it was interesting to see how infidelity, ever conscious of this, has directed and still is directing all its skill and power to tbe overthrow of this doctrine and also the disagreement and confusion tbat retgus in the ranks of the assailants. Another most interesting feature in the synod was the sablatb school meeting on Sabbath afternoon. There were four'addresses by the following gentlemen, Kev. Geo. O. Little, Rev. J. D. McCord, R.T. W.J. Essick, and Rev. L. Northrop. I have never heard more appropriate and more successful addresses to sabbath school children. The great requirements and provisions of the gospel were held up to tbe young mind in a most impressive manner. Rev. Mr. Safford the pastor of the church is a most successful superintendent as well as - able pastor.
