"In the midst of life we are in death;" is a sentiment in the Liturgy of the Church often realized. Last we- k. This question has lieen discussed (c r some time throngh thc Journals of the M. E. Church, and will for the second time be submitted to thc members some time this month, to be decided for or against or all time to come. Able arguments have been adduced by eminent laymen against lay representation, oj th. i.ounds tbat it fs such an innova tion iu the economy of the Church as to materially weaken her influence lor good and ultimately rob her of her t,!ory. It my be a departure from our sphere, but if we drop a word on the itfbject.the Church Wil pnrdou this seeming indiacre tion. We adnit that any Interference with the fundamental Doctrines of the Church would be an innoration that would w ork its ruin. We also admit that any form of temporal government connected with Otfccasing devotkn, prompted by the spirit of Christ will bring aith it a rich liar vent and mast golden sheaves. That tbt? M. E Church has accomplished an unprecedented amount of good under the present ccouomy, none can deny: but that the temporal service of lhe Church had mnch to do with tnis prosperity is mich to be doubted. This success mu3t depend upon the unity of action and devotion to lhe c. use, and the cause of this success can never be reach ed with or witbcot lay representation so long s this unity of action and devotion remain But this unity of action ia about to be broken, the progress ol the age, the spirit of the limes in w hich we live tend 10 develope a spirit of Democracy, and that apirit once imbibed is ears ried into the management andgovernruenr of every organization, and a portion ol the people demand a voice in the Church also. To refuse IbuSB this ptivelege is but to break Ibis unity, and crippel the spiritual as well ss the temporal prosper' ty. We do not believe in temporizing expedients cither in a civil or a re'igious gov eminent, but thc times . indieste that it 1 expedient that a change should be made in tnis direciion, that the church should have a voice in her economy, and that which is expedient, is right, and vice verta. But if this is denied the house will beci me divided, and if divided cannot prosper. It ii not enough for the opposition toay deligst on to show tbat under tl e peaent rconmy the church has had onprec e Jented succest.for.s we te'oresaid.rhe temporal economy had but little to do With this success. But if, for example, we grant tbat the temporal economy of the Church was tbe principal means of success, tbe continued soceeae might depend upon a modification of those means.
