ANOTHER "GUSHER" IN JEFFERSON TOWNSHIP. IM Barrels of Od per Day A correspondent says the Stand ard Oil Co., lea.-ed land of Martin B. Eckert, about 4 m les south of Birdseye, and bian drilling for oil on Dec. 8th, and in JO days had gone toward China 1,000 feet, when a superior quality of oil was struck, and the well is estimated to tlow 100 barrels a day, and also considerable gas. The well wad capped, and the company, be says, will drill more wells on their leased property, and lay pipe lines to Birdseye, from where it will be shipped. The citizens of Birdseye are greatly elaltd, and anticipate a lively growth in population the coming year, that will add greatly to the wealth and business of the town. Tue Courier hoes they may realize iheir biggest anticipations. Darcbotz Killed oear St. Heory. New Years s Day. New Year's night a number of ung men of Cass township were imj a charivari party serenading vred Kirkhoff and bride, when John D jrcholz slipped and fell, the shot gun which he carried was discharged, and the load entered his forebead, tearing off the top of his head. He was immediately .arried into the bouse, and medical aid summoned, but without avail, as be died at 3 o'clock Friday morning. Coroner Fred Meinker, who had just taken office New Years' day, held an inquest, and returned a verdict of accidental death. He was a young man of 22 years, and generally liked by his associates. The burial took place at Ferdinand Saturday morning. The Courier' W assist ton Letter. Washington City, Jan. 5, '03. The criticisms aud protestations which have greeted Senator Hoar's anti-trust bill furnish ample evidence of the unwillingness of Congress to carry into effect, in a single instance, any of the recommendations of the President in regard to the control of the trusts. No soon er had the terms of Mr. Hoar's bill been made public than Representative Jenkins, chairman of the Judiciary committee, made public a statement in which he declared that the trusts had nothing to fear, and the people nothing to gain, by the passage of the bill, which was merely the old ideas rehabilitated in new phraseology. The Hoar bill provides for the publicity so earn estly advocated by the President, and forbids, under penalty of $0,000 fine or not more than a year's imprisonment, or both, combinations in restraint of trade, the selling of goods below a fair market price f r the purpose of destroying a competitor, and the ownership by on- 8 r poration of stock in other corporations. Itis rnmered that Senator I, idgVi bill reducing the tariff Philipp ne imports from 7" to 28 pur cent of theDiogley rate-, will enc writer at vers opposition in the Senate The f ugar trust is firmly opposed to mich reduction, as are the I amber an I other industries, especially the t -b ceo growers. The fact that lot reduction would prove ot Mftttl a I vantage to the inlands would q MIHI no hing, of toojfwa, m oompafed with the personal intere-ts of iheso producers. C. A. 8. Married.
