Gentlemen who have made a study of the subject, Including the chief of the bureau of roatl Inquiry at Washington, have told us as a result of their investigations tbat it costs our farmers on an average
a little over three dollar BSC ton to market their product. This three dollars per ton of course is not necessarily money expended, but is the value in dollars ind cents of the time, labor and effort on the part of man anil beast j in traveling with a load of crops from the farm to the market. These gentle men tell us further that fully two
thirds of this three dollars per ton Bight be saved by the construction of good roads. You sc' this amounts tu a great th ai, and I will give you a littlo example from mj own state of W isconsin as an illustration. We raisein Wis eoiisin each year about i ,000,000 tons ol oats, 1,000,000 tons of corn, and enough wheal and barley to make another 750,0110 tons, a total of 2.700,000 tons, not to mention other producta, such as hay, jsitatoes, rye and tobacco, all of which amount to cousitleru blc. The cost of marketing this at three dollars per ton is IS.tME.OQO. Two-thirds of this is $ .'...'.110,000, n tremendous amount, which might be saved in W isconsin alone on vats, corn, wheat ami bailey, and that year after year.

GOOD PROPOSITION. Why t'ows Moiul.l Hi- nought wn.l Sold by tho Milk lt. The vtilue of a cow depends so wholly on the amount and quality of the milk she gives that the proposition coming from th North Carolina experiment station, namely, to sell or buy cows by the milk test, seems rather natural ami good sense. "The plan is based on the yield of their milk, together w it h the quality of the same as determined by tests of the milk. The rule is to pay for the cow at the rate of $12 a gallon of milk given a day that is rich enough to show three and one-half per cent, of fat. To this price add or subtract one dollar for every one fourth of one per cent, of fat a blob is above or below the three and one-half per cent. Hy this lule a cow is bengal entirely or her merits. It is believed to be n conservative plan, and one w inch, if adapted (or one upon a similar plan ). will certainly raise the standard of cows and increase their milk and butter production; for If they cannot be sold easily fur milkcows, they will soon lie turned over to the butcher, and a better animal be kept or a willing purchaser be found. The result cannot fail to le iM'iieficial to all parties." T. (deiner, in Farm nnd Fireside.

Tnharro Tm for I'lnnts. This is one if tin safest and best ot insecticides for the home grower. To lie sure it is a Hid easier to use tobacco in the pulverized form, spraying t lie plants tirst, and then dusting the line tobacco over the foliage. P.ut it is usually necessary to allow the dust to remain for sonic hours (or even days, at times), and the effect is most untidy, not to say undeeorat ive. besides, the young foliage of some few plants suffers from such an application. The decoction is much safer, ami. as it may remain on the foliage unt'd the next shower bath, it gives a lengthened protection. If aphides are not present on other plants of the OOiisctlOB, a single application of that tobacco gpraj vv.'i sometimes protect carnations from autumn until the wanner breath of spring gives the insects new vigor and reinforced numbers.
