9Debs a thousand times more honorable and honest and intelligent than Judge Dudley Woods, of "blocks of Jive" fame is likelv to
spend 1895 in jail at Chicago, for
doing his duty properly. Well, John, the Baptist, was murdered in jail, and Saints Peter and Paul died there and yet the cause for which they suffered inarched gloriously on to triumph, until "Peace on Earth
and Good Will toward Men," for
which Debs and the Saints strove, has been shouted with acclaim and joy all over the world during the last two weeks. lThe Indianapolis Sentinel
quotes Congressman Bynum as say
ing: "In my judgment there is but one course for the democratic party, and that is to pursue unfalteringly a policy leading in the direction 'of a solid currency, divorced from government issue." In other words he would destroy all the legal tender greenbacks which in his first canvass for Congress he called "the best currency for the people ever devised." If the Democratic congressmen so far surrender the control of the People's money to Bankers as Bynum indicates, they are only following in
the footsteps of the Republican par
ty under Sherman's lead, and will
utterly destroy all chances for Democratic success in 1S9G. True patriotism as well as true partv policy
demands financial legislation in the
interest of the common People in
stead of for the wealthy corporations
and classes.

Townsend, the gasbag, trickster lawyer of Vineennes, who has boxed all the points of the political compass, and justly failed every time, except in the amount of gas and that generally of a very poor quality exploded, is set down for some gas about "rights of labor," but that will not impress any thinking man. "The imperative duty of this
congress is to repeal all laws au thorizing the Secretary of the Treas
urv to mortgage the labor of the
country to a gang of New York gamblers by issuing Government bonds. The Secretary claims this monstrous and horrible privilege under a law enacted by a Republican congress, and this vestige of Republicanism sanctioned by Carlisle, Cleveland, Voorhees, and the New York gamblers who have profited 1100,000,000 by it in the last year, should be swept away. If expenditures are more than receipts, under the Gorman tariff and Cleveland extravagance, cut down expenses, and issue greenbacks, redecmnble only in greenbacks, and make them a full legal tender for everything, to meet the deficiency. Repeal all the laws passed by Republican congresses, authorizing continuous appropriations, and immediately take steps to reduce expenditures within receipts, so that the millions of dollars of mortgage in the shape of bonds, wrongfully placed on the industry of the country for the benefit of a privileged class that has no right to encouragement in a Republican government, may again be put in process of redemption. The Secretary of the Treasury's Report for the four months ending Dec. 28, 1894, shows receipts from all sources during this third of a year of 83,021,523, or about 123,000,000 more than the entire expanses of the Government for a whole year under Buchanan's administration. It is a great public sc indal, and a source of shame to all true Democrats, that under these iour months of Cleveland, Carlisle, Voorhees, Springer and their party satelites,
the public expense should be $118,908,178 showing a deficit for the four months of 35,280,G55. If this Government, instead of being the boasted "of the people, by the people, and for the people," is of the bankers, by the bankers, and for the benefit of gamblers in bonds and stocks, this state of affairs will be permitted to continuo until corrected by the Populists or Republicans and the Democrats
party which succeeds in 189G will
have the support of those who live by physical work, as well as men
tal, and the road to success lies in
placing some of their leaders in the front, and being bold in endorsing
true Jacksonian Democracy. But the banquet will be a social and intellectual success, if it is not politically, and should be largely attended by Democrats who enjoy a "good time," and have in thenclothes $3 to pay for the supper. The price charged will keep the
"rabble" out, and give the speakers ? .1! 1? 1 1 A
