Israeli gymnastic team performs at Center
The Israeli gymnastics team, in Indianapolis for the World Gymnastics Championships, gave a special exhibition for about 300 people at the Center Tuesday, Sept. 3. Rod Hofts, athletic director for the Center, said he was told the team still is in a building stage and probably would not place among the top finishers in the world meet. Israel sent a delegation of 20 to the event, including six female athletes, seven male athletes, three coaches and a referee, a physiotherapist, the head of the delegation and its manager. The "old man" among .lie gymnasts is Pavel Kirin, 31, a new Soviet immigrant.
Youngest and oldest female athletes are Keren Lindenbaum, 14, and Karmit Burian, 18, a kibbutz member who was champion of Israel in 1990 and vice champion for 1991. Current Israel champions are male team member Ron Kaplan, 21, who now attends UCLA, and female team member Rotem Amir, 16. The Indianapolis championships opened Sept. 6 and end Sunday, Sept. 15. The manager of the delegation, Jacob Wischnia, is a previous champion of Israel and national coach. He is sc-cictary-general of the Israel Gy mnastics Association. Itzhak ivtor, president of the association, heads the delegation
Green banks are goal of White River group
People who really want to do something about the environment will get a chance this weekend. The fall White River Greenway Cleanup will be Saturday, Sept. 14, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The city-county Department of Public Works is hoping at least 500 area residents turn out to help pick up the litter and debris from the banks of the White River, eliminating perhaps tons of illegally dumped trash, damaged foliage and common household waste along a 10-mile stretch of the river. Volunteers can register by calling 236-5411. The central staging area for the cleanup will be Holliday Park, where all volunteers should first check in. Each volunteer will get a commemorative T-shirt. Gloves, trash bags and pickup sticks will be provided. Beverages will be on hand for volunteers at the work sites. The White River $
Greenway Task Force urges any company or civic group that wishes to donate money or materials for the cleanup to contact Jenny Pieper of the Indianapolis Clean City Committee at 633-3022.
