(Continued from page 1) and keeps up her personable attitude under pressure,” added Godwin. Although most of Gilbert’s experience has been on hard courts and at a junior level, she held up remarkably well on the clay surface. GILBERT S GOAL IS TO turn pro but she is not sure when. This victory has given me confidence in knowing I can compete with the pros,” she said. However, Gilber is presently interested in pursing her studies at UCLA. Gilbert began playing tennis at the age of 9 and has been taught by a number of pros. She comes from a family of tennis players. Both her younger brother, 17, and her older brother, 21 play tennis. She is not a newcomer to winning. Last year she won both the Maccabiah Games and the Seventeen Magazine Tournament of Champions for girls 18 and under. She is currently ranked No. 2 on the UCLA team and 134 on the computer. Gilbert’s next tournament is the 18 Nationals on grass followed by theU.S. Open. THREE OTHER JEWISH tennis pros were here for the Clay Courts. They were Nancy Ornstein, 25, from Washington,D.C., Steve Krulevitz, 27, from Baltimore, Md., and Harold Schoenfield, 20, from Jacksonville, Fla. All were defeated in early rounds of play. Why are there so few professional Jewish tennis players? “Sports are just not part of our traditional Jewish upbringing,” said Krulevitz. “Jewish homes stress the fields of education, art and music,” he added. “Tennis requires a lot of dedication,’’ said Ornstein. “Jewish youths often come from advantaged families and they are not always willing to put in the necessary determination and hard work,” she said. The fact that the clubs these players play at do not accept Jewish members does not bother these players. “I’m aware that prejudice exists,” said Krulevitz, "but that can’t be changed.” ORNSTEIN HAD RUN INTO prejudice six years ago but has not seen it recently. “Perhaps I’m not on the lookout for prejudice because I don’t want to see it,” she said.

Gilbert has not encountered any prejudice in her career. Schoenfield said that although he might reflect on prejuduce for a moment, he puts it out of his mind during a tournament. None of the players had encountered any prejudice among the other players. “Tennis is such an international game that there is a tremendous mixture of players,” said Krulevitz. All nationalities, including, Indians,Blacks, Europeans and Americans olay side by side. “Being Jewish doesn’t make any difference,” said Dana Gilbert. There is currently a big tennis movement in Israel and many of these players have played or hope to play there. How long do these players think it will be before Israel develops top world players? IT WILL TAKE A LONG time because of internal priorities in Israel," said Ornstein. She felt that the country devoted all its energy to fighting and as a result didn’t have enough resources left to build enough tennis training facilities. Shp the case of too ranked
Israeli Paulina Peled who was not able to reach her potential because she had to join the army. Krulevitz, who won the Macabbiah games last year, agreed that it will be 5-10 years before Israel will produce any world class players. He represented Israel in the recent Davis Cup tournament. As a result he became an Israeli citizen but still resides in the U.S. Krulevitz is proud of being Jewish and wears a Jewish star around his neck. Do these tennis pros have any family members following in their footsteps? Krulevitz’s older sister playes tennis twice a week and is a good doubles player. Ornstein comes from a sports orientated family, her father was a former handball champ who now plays tennis. She has a younger brother who is an avid tennis player. The Gilbert family is also actively involved in tennis. Both her brothers play tennis. Dana’s younger brother has a junior rating.
