Hilldring Steps Onl; Job Nay Stay Vacant WASHINGTON—The State Department announced this week that Maj. Gen. John Hilldring had declined appointment as special State Department adviser on Palestine. Hilldring’s brief statement that he was too ill to handle the duties of the post and the vagueness of State Department over whether the post would be left vacant toched off a flood of rumors. Hilldring’s appointment had been a pleasant surprise to Zionists. (NJP May 7, 1948). He had been one of the staunchest fight ers for partition in the pre-Nov. 29 United Nations battle. The appointment had evoked reports that it meant the virtual elimination of Loy Henderson, chief of the Near Eastern division in the State Department and bitter foe of partition and Jewish aspirations in Palestine, from any influence on U. S. Palestine policy. Whether Hilldring’s rejection of the Palestine post meant the return to influence of Henderson was not known.

NEW YORK—Describing apostate Benjamin Freedman, founder of the League for Peace with Justice in Palestine, as a "crackpot,” Magistrate Hyman Bushel dismissed a complaint of criminel libel brought by the attorney for the League. The complaint was filed by Hallam Richardson against Rev. Dr. Henry Atkinson, chairman of the advisory board of the NonSectarian Anti-Nazi League. The hearing lasted 23 days during which Freedman, as a key witness, testified at length to place his fantastic antl-Jewish, antiZionist career on court records. (NJP May 14, 1948). Libel Claim at UN Richardson claimed he had been libeled in statements about him in a bulletin submitted to the United States General Assembly last November by the Non-Sec-tarian League during the Palestine Partition debate. The pamphlet remarked that Richardson had been long known “in the halls of pro-Fas-cist propaganda.” Richardson formerly had been an attorney for Joseph £. McWilliams, whom he described at the hearing as an “anti-Semite, a Fascist, pro-Hitler and pro-Nazi.” Judge Bushel said that Richardson had often argued he had a right to represent anyone he chose, with which the judge said he agreed. "But when he starts to associate with a crackpot like Freedman, who is just an international meddler, he becomes his companion and collaborator,” the judge said. “When he talks about representing McWilliams, of course he has the right to represent him, but when he becomes an associate of McWilliams, the notorious hate-monger, he has very little to complain about."
