MONEY NOTES. cm th nrofits of banking the London Market Review comes to the following conclusions: The enormous profits divided by tbo sbarehoWers in the principal London and Provincial joint-stock banks amount ing In many instance to dividends of 20 per -eut. aud upwards ou the capital invested are indications of tbreo important tacts: 1. That banking m an extremely prolitable tws4n6rst 2. Thai il an be conducted with safety and soccers; and, 3. That the depositors, whose mon eyes are mainly instrumental in creating the profits, receive nothing beyond the bare allowance f interest on tbeir deposits, and are not allowed to participate in the result to which they so largely contribute. The routusl principle haw been adopted, with marked uoeew, by many of the leading insurance companies, and" it is a matter of surprise that its application to bankini: hin not, in tbesn days of financial enterprise, been largely adopted, there being no aoubt that it wonlu produce eqatlly beneficial results, if given a fair trial. A perusal of the admirable tables published by Mr. W. Abbot, of the Stock Exchange, shows that the aggregate deposits of the ten principal Londou banks amount to the Immense sum of .tf"0O0,0OO, or about tour times the amount of the deposits in the Bank of England. ST04JX OK MEATS IN CINCINNATI. The Price Current of August 1 i says: The stocks of winter-cured bulk meats and bacon held by packers and dealers in Cincinnati May 1 last, as reported, aggregated 35,819,8o0 ' pounds. By reference to our weekly table of receipts and shipments we find that Irom May 1 to date the ' shipments of bulk and bacon meats, lee- the receipts, bavo amounted to 34,S9C;011 lbs. If this be deducted from tho stocks held May 1, the result is 10,023,83! lbs., which may be' received as the approximate sock or bulk and bacon raeais now on bird. The reported movement of the product latt year shows that during the period of six weeks, Irom August 14 to September 25. the shipments fioni this city of bacon aud balk ntea's, less the receipts, amounted to 10,72,4?2 11., or within 50,000 of an amount equal to present stocks. It will thus bn sein tba it will not require a demand ft om tbie time forward to the new treason equal to that of the corresponding time la-t year to dip se ol present supplies oi this class of meats." WHEAT IX MILWACXrE. The Milwaukee Journal ot Commerce givea this statement: Tne market for the week ending August 11, has declined iVtc per bushel from the closing quotations of the previous week. as cbeene is concerned while there ba 'been mere inquiry from the shippers as well as Lome trade for butter, and no doutt a good business could be done in the export line if Western bu'ter of good quality could be bad at 22c and even 23c which latter price has been paid for some 200 package f for tbe Kcgtisb markets, and it would now be dillicult to obtain the grades deaired for export, at that price, 83 most of that grade of Western is held on limits at 2.V., and selling for that in ttome cases, to tbs home trade. This cover factory butter, while there are choico Wettern dairies and creameries which are selling at 1T7C and :29c. The whole butter market, therefore, is strong at the outside advanced qnotations of the week, with a good demand and a supply m light or all grades that all must advance soon again unless the latter increases or tho former decreases soon. GOOD SKJXS. BALANCE OF TRADE IN OCR FAVOR. On the showing of trade statistics, the
New York Bulletin compiles ana com menUt as follows: The latest returns of the Bureau of Statistics bring the figures of the foreign commerce of tbe United States up to the end of April, and enable us to compare our foreign trade since the panic witli ine periou immeuiaieij uciTcuiuK. For the ten months ending April 00, the imports tor the whole country compare as lolIowh with those of like months a year previous: IMPORTS, O0LD VALUE. , 1S7M. f4;V,7tW.O"7 1872-S. $5;a.t iw.wd Mcrchandie.'. Thi.", however, docs not correctly represent the comparative consumption ol foreign goods during the period, tor there baa been a reduct ion in the amount of goods in warehouses from f77,o46,r70, on April 30, 1873, to föH,17r,i71. on April 30, 1S74; so that the amount of imports gone into consumption buring the 10 month was ?43,940,284, while for the same period of the preceding fiscal ear. the amount was $088,082,903. There Las thus been a reduction in the consumption of imported goods of about $100,000,000 during the 10 months, compared with the same period of the preceding nsca year, it is wormy oi noio, nowever, tua the amonnt of goods in warenouses nas bceu reduced to an exceptionally low point, which illustrates tbo low condition of im-ur.nsi.-a rr whioh wa have reneatedlv made references a an eleaicnt to be considered in esiiinatinz the present condition ol trade. The exrtort movement for the 10 months ending April 30, compares as fol lows: EXPORTS, GOLD VALDE3. 1S73-1. 1S72-3. 5,7G":m Domestic merchandise......; 179, .a.710 Foreign merchandise-.... 1.1,0951 13,41, Total merchandise Domestic Rpecie..... ? 193,468 .Sl tl,lS3,520 5&l,02,(42 ,(07wM $51.175,67 rorjign (specie, ö,UkJ1 5H,1S17 Total specie... 7379,420 Total exports.- . 517,65308 1 50762,916 These fisrures show that while we bnve ex ported $29,191.809 less specie than during the ton months of the previous year, yev we b3ve shipped ?59,2S:),43l more of the produce and niercbandis vnakina net increase in the exports of pecie and qooda combined of 5M.0y0.l2. The fact thnt we have been aii to reduce our consumption of imported goods, within the ten months, bv 100,000,000, and ytt iicres our exports of home products by 130,000,000, shows that there has leu no lack of economy to square our condition with the effects ot the panic, ana auoras strong presumptive evidence that we are working rapidlv towards a healthier state of business. REVIEW OF TUE HOME MARKETS. WEEKLY REVIEW OF THE IWDIASAPOLIS WHOLESALE MARKETS. Monday Evening, August 17. The money market In this city is very close. However it may be elsewhere money Is scarce and hard to get. Hood papei at the bank is no object, the currency is already gone Into the cir cuit of the fall circulation and the borrowers at home find dry picking. The rates are not materially cha pea as the demands are limited, except the calls from the country. The firm ol Klfgan Ot Co. are again in the market to buy hoRs, ai d the great pork factory ends its vacation and renews operations this week. Hogs are still well in price, say fti 25 to to 50. The provision market fa strong and stocks pretty much Cleaned out. The dealers have had a royal time or it this year, those holding till July having made piles of money. Grain is very steady, wheat being a little lower in Chicago to-day but prlcts are unchanged here. Corn hold. Its own at the price of tbe last ten days, irom &m to toc. Groceries arc qolei. Coffees and sugar are both a little weak for the last day or two. The movements of grain have been large for a week cast.
