My good friend William Dy-
cus, owner of the Oriental Cafe in the 500 block of Indiana Ave., is trying to relocate his business in Haughville... but is getting the turndown by the Liquor Board for various - reasons, none of which seem legal to this writer. In fact, he has spent hundreds of dollars fixing the new place pp with wall to wall carpet plus a fully equipped kitchen...and broth-
er, this cost real dough. Now it seems to me that
somebody is trying to deny this father of 12 children the right to earn an honest living. We feel the fella is being mistreated by somebody because of alotta bad talk by jealous - persons. If you think this fella is getting a raw deal, write and tell me just what you think should be done under the circumstances. The fella has closed the Oriental and has no income while waiting the board’s decision, but his large family MUST eat during these days with no money coming in!
We said years ago that
URBAN RENEWAL WAS - NOTHING BUT NEGRO REMOVAL... Now you see it in action in the inner city. A university moving in and -
BLACKS being moved out.
They tried that in New York and Chicago, but it backfired. Negroes in Harlem told New York “you come so far and no farther”. Negroes in Chic go did likewise and the intrusion into the black ghetto was stopped dead... But local blacks sat back all serene in their sanctum sanctoriums and let it all happen. It also cut down our chances of ever electing a black to Congress from the 11th District...which has been cut up into other
districts.
And here’s where we miss my good friend, Atty. Frank Beckwith, better known as “Mr. Republican”, who would have raised holy h--U to stop this invasion. Frank would have seen this as killing his chances of becoming the first black Congressman from Naptown. Among the many qualified persons who would have made ideal representatives were: James Cummings, public relations expert and one time candidate for this post; Ex-judge Rufus Kukykendall; Judge Mercer Mance and ExJudge Wilbur Grant. You understand, of course, we are speaking in the past tense. Speaking in the present tense- - we have several fine young lawyers, business and civic minded leaders who would make first-rate Congressmen. My good friend Leroy (Sporty) Johnson planed down from Boston for the Kentucky Derby,\and came by with our

friend WilliamDycus for a long chat about the happenings 'round the town. He visited friends in Peoria.Ill., before returning home... A long distanced call from one of my choice friends, delovely Ermadel Turner of Atlanta.Ga., who told of her current illness. She followed the call with a letter and said she is in a cast and using crutches, but will try and make it (a trip here) in July. She sends her love to all her friends here and wants me to take care of myself...that I’ll do to the best of my ability...and I do hope for her a very speedy recovery. She has been very nice to me during my illness. Yes, Carolyn, I am still writing my column, but not on a regular weekly basis...and I do appreciate your interest and do hope you continue as a reader of The Avenoo. Carole is in town from California, where she taught school. She’s presently an established resident of Fox Hill Drive, and expects to call Naptown her home. Lovely Lilly Clark of Danville,111. - called to say she is very much improved and out of the hospital. She has our prayers for a speedy recovery...Ditto for - brother Hazelip of Willis Fun eral Home, who is or was confined to Wishard Hospital. IN THE MAIL BAG: Another breezy missive comes in from Brother Thomas Lively, a regular contributor to this column. Here tis: “The Saint”: My intentions were to drop you a line earlier, but the slight change in camps slowed me down. Nevertheless, I’m still hanging on! I have a lot to say, so I’ll start with a subject everyone’s been kicking around
lately.
Welfare is one of the most overt forms of racism there is. I feel it is racist because there is no systematic oppression of whites by black people in this country-society. The society is not structured for this, nor do black people have the power, the values, or he interest to systematically oppress whites. The welfare system is one of the most strongest forms of institutional and procedural - racism. The sister a few weeks ago pointed out that it was more whites on welfare than blacks. That ain't no big thing! There’s more white people in the country than blacks, but yet it’s 50 percent black out of the total population of prisoners. The welfare system of this society fails to serve one racial group as well as they do the most dominant racial group
in this society!
The same racist attitude in South Africa is present here in this country. It’s killed brothers like Byron Richardson, and with its program of - systematical genocide, it’s - killing those on welfare, in prisons, and any other institution which claims to help blacks
and the poor.
Those brothers accused of
the death of a white supervisor in Michigan City (State Prison)-
-they are struggling to keep
their lives. These things have been happening to black folks for years; this ain’t no new thing! The very same racist social structure we have/live in today was here before you 46 showed (as an individual)! It’s 46 designed to oppress black folks, 46 so don’t get excited or shocked 46 at President Carter’s new wel46 fare reform bill. To reform 46 welfare is only bait to make 46 blacks think he’s working for 46 them. Carter’s interest doesn’t 1? involve us. He can’t save us,
jjj[ only we can save us!

WHAT JAWS1 Richard Dreyfus and Robert Shaw star in “Jaws”, story of a great white killer shark who takes a vacation spot by storm; now showing as a co-feature with “Rooster Cogburn”, starring John Wayne and Katharine Hepburn, at the Walker Theatre. A ‘real’ prison flick
As “Car Wash” was a ‘real’ car wash film, and “Record City” will be a ‘real’ record shop movie; “Brothers”, now showing at the Circle Theatre, is a ‘real’ prison drama. “Brothers”, story of revolutionary David Thomas’ change from an unorthodox youth who enters jail on a robbery charge only to become a renowned leader and world figure, was filmed last year in North Dakota State Penintentiary amid the institution’s everyday activities.
Extensive security measures were in force around the clock. Additional guards were hired to watch not only cast (including Bernie Casey and Vonetta McGee) and crew members, but tools and equipment as well. Lights, cables, and other equipment were dismantled each evening, inventoried and locked up until the start of nextday’s filming. Prison regulations required filming take place without disrupting the institution’s normal schedule. When breaks
