The potential footballers are seared away by statements like those you have made. I feel siu\?, too, that you have not intended to discourage participation in football. I can name many All • American basketball players who were also top football players. Football does not produce the great rash of injured that some people are wont to suppose. • If there is anything you can do to correct this misconception, I would be very happy Yours in Sports, GRAHAM W MARTIN' Football Coach Crispus Attucks High School. * * + EDITOR’S REBOUND: It was Attucks Basketball Coach Bill Garrett who said “Jet’s” injury was originally suffered ih football. BUT THAT WAS BEFORE HE WAS STIGMATIZED AS “UNSPORTSMANLIKE.” Meanwhile, some other strange things were happening. We didn't keep a record of all the field goals “taken away” from Attucks as traveling or fouls, etc., were called. We did make note of 4 of hem and would judge there were 6 or 7. A goal-tending call gave Anderson’s Jim Osborne a fielder. A free throw by Benson was nullified because someone stepped over the line. ANY OF THESE CALLS, taken singly, may have been proper. All together, they formed a pattern. It was a pattern either of very hard luck for Attucks — or of the sla’ie of mind which is present In a mob. With few exceptions, basketball officiating is one judgment call from beginning to end of a game. Contact is continual these days. If you’re looking for one of the teams, or a particular player, to break the rules, you will find it. A, mob is a large group of people looking for an indiividual or a few persons whom they already believe to be criminal.

THE ONE-NITERS are coming in like a bang, notwithstanding many of the laymen are out of work. However, they find the ‘bread 1 to attend the different social club affairs here. There is not much happening with regards to looa’don gigs. Many of the bistros who once hired combos nightly are not doing it anymore. Some tavern owners stated that their business was off 50 percent. Them are many spots now up for sale In fact, one can almost name their terms. With spring just around *J»e corner, maybe the music business here and over the country will pick up . . . Let’s hope so . . . Keep Music Alive—Insist on Live Musicians. The* 1958 convention of the American Federation of Musicians will be held at Convention Hall, Philadelphia, during the week of •Tune 2. The headquarters will be at the Sheraton hotet. SICK LIST: Preston Johnson, one of Nap town’s finest vocalists, is now confined) at the V. A. Hospital out West Tenth street-way, Ward 6, West. Preston is very popular with the local music-lovers, having appeared on the Recorder Xmas show and many of the leading nite spots. Word has just jumped into port that “Teena,” singer, dancer and all-around showman, Is also sick in the Flower Mission hospital. We hope that the boys will be up and around real soon. Don’t forget to dig the cats and cheer them up. THANKS, for the letter from Mrs. Fred Lyles of San Francisco which we received recently. Glad to know that The Recorder is very popular in that city. Incidentally. Mrs Lyles is the mother-in-law of Buddy Montgomery, one of our hometown musicians who is doing a great job with the “Mastersounds combo” on the West Coast Some columns back we featured them. All of the cats in the group hail from here . . . Keep the good work up, fellows. We will be diggin’ youn new records. You wanta believe it. FANNIE MAE WILLS, young vocalist, is now being featured with the BobCats combo under the direction of Yours. Truly. The crew played for the popular Sportsmen club of Muncie recent ly to SRO (standing room only). The affair was not a formal dance as stated on t h e theatrical pages . . . Sorry', fellows. LOCATIONS: Duke Hampton and his group are currently at the new Rock N Roll Bar . . . Veteran Bandleader Rupert. at Izzy's Southway Bar The Melvin Rhyen crew doing h great job at the new Paradise supper dub, not forgetting the sensational Jimmie Coe at the Flamingo club . . . Willis “Mr. Hammond” Dyer and his hard pushing unit still the featured attraction at George’s Bar and Orchid Room. Willis had a small taste of the flu recently, however, he is doing fine now . . . The Doris Stokes Trio making “much” loot at he Brass Rail Tavern located in downtown Indianapolis . . . Sonny Johnson jumpin’ the Turf Bar nightly. SOONER OR LATER, every songwriter scribbles out a tune which he feels is “just right” for Nat “King” Cole. This is not strange, for Nat is probably the most consistent seller of records in the music business. The surprising thing is that Nat attempts to lend, an ear to any song which meaures up to professional standards. The tunes are picked up in a variety of ways. An average of 55 songs per week arc received from music publishers, professional writers and even some amateurs Many songs are picked up by Nat during bis frequent, tours. Each song is subjected to careful scrutiny in the hope that it may prove io be another Nat “King" Cole hit song. First, il is screened by Jack Leonard, former soloist with the late Tommy Dorsey band, who is s’.ill a mean man with a bar of music himself. Jack is part of Nat’s personal management team who siphons off the* obviously bad numbers so that the ‘King” won’t have to wade through everything. Once a song gets past Jack, it winds up on Nat’s home piano. A (ine musician as well as singer, Nat tries songs out on the keyboard first, toying with the shading and melody to see if they fit his highly individualistic style. “He goes over every one of them,’ Jacks says, proud of the association with someone who, de.‘•pite his heavy t commitments, takes time to cast an appreciative eye over someone else’s creative outpourings. "Sometimes, he’ll fool around with a number for months. Then one day he’ll come up to me and say he likes the song I sent and will probably i-e-covd it. By then I’ve forgotten which one it rs, but it doesn't matter. I know it'll be a hit.” Jack maKcs it near that, in the final evaluation. Nat is the presiding judge "Nat knows what’s right for Nat. Like any well-known singer, Nat is continually being approached by songwriters and when he can, hears them out.” THE INDIANAPOLIS JAZZATHON FESTIVAL record session which lasted up to 1 a. m.
