A Famous Old House. The old brick building ou Market street, just west of Iliioois, which is to be torn down so that, the eycloratna building may be erected, has a history. In 1S37 it was built by order of the Legislature tor ute by Governor Wallace end his family, “the Governor’s Mansion” it was called, and alter that it was occupied by snceessive Governors of the Slate—Bigger, Whitcomb, Wright, Lane and Morton, the latter only occupying the building a shor*. time. In those days it was customary for the Governor to give weekly receptions. Here it was that Kossuth, the Hungarian patriot, Count Pulaski and the staff who accompanied these gentlemen were entertained. Lady Murray, .a maid of honor to Queen Victoria, was also given a reception here. All the officials who lived there did so under proteat, because they believed it to be very unhealthy. The wives of Governors Whilcomb and Wright died there and Mr*. Morton was verv sick there. The ground on which it stood was bought by the State from Dr. Sandere, the lather of Mrs. Zereida Wallace. Sudden Death of Mr. Cottle. R. H. Cottle, residing 266 Indiana avenue, had been complaining for several days, still his illnesa was not considered serious, and he was able to be about tba house. This morning he arose about 6 o'clock, and while seated in a chair wits stricken with heart disease, dying almost immediately. The deceased was aged sixty-six, and be was a member of the Tippecanoe Club. Hq leaves a family. The Judgment Reduced. Some time ago Ida J. Black brought suit agaiust Louisa Kelpin and her husband for damages tor being ejected from a house in Belmont, which she rented. The case was tried in a justice’s court and she was given judgment tor $lt>8. The deiendants appealed, and in Judge Howe’s court this morning judgment was again given against them, but this time tor only $25. Jack Williams on Trial. Jack Williams, the colored boy who shot Ed Stewart at Wilson & Spaan’s stable about two weeks ago, was placed on trial in the Criminal Court this morning, and is being defended by Arthur Brown, The testimony thus far brought out shows that Williams acted in seli-defense, and his acquittal is probable. Stewart is well enough to be aboat town.

A Spell of Weather.
Saturday evening the variable weather of the past week settled into a steady rain and sleet, which made the street* and sidewalks one mass ot ice. The street cars made their trips with difficulty, and horses that were not “rough shod" could scarcely get along. Yesterday the same state of affairs existed, and pedastrianism was accompanied by considerabl* danger. Late iu the day, however, there was a considerable thaw, which largely changed the ice into slush. A great many people fell down, oat no serious accidents were reported, although the ambulances were called in several cases to take injured person* home. Yesterday morning the teleegrapb and telephone wire* were heavily laden with ice, and many ot them broke under the strain. The lines were down in several places out on the I. A St. L. and V’andalia Roads, and there was trouble in running the trains in consequence, but the breaks were repaired by linemen last night. To add to ail this trouble, the secret service officer received a telegram last evening, notifying him that a heavy snow storm was coming. It won’t hurt anybody’s feeling* if it
don’t come.
