THE .MARKET NEWS.
INDIANA NEWS.
j •Owimr to the fact that Decoratiou j Day is a general holiday there arc uo
i market reports furnished.
Mr. Fielding Beeler, superintendent of the State Board of Agriculture, reports that at his h> u<\ tour miles southwest of the city, the seven-teeu-yeor locusts have made their appearmtee. He says he tiret noticed them ou lust Thursday, when hi* hogs were gruobiug around iu the ground hunting them, which called tits attentiou to the fact of their presence, and lie noticed two or three dozen of them. On Friday their number had increased to seventy-live or a hundred iu the first place they were found, and they had not scattered any. Mr. Beeler says he remembers of having seen seventeen year locusts several times, and lie does not agree with' the common belief that they create a dreary w aste whenever they come by eating up all the vegetation, lie says that he lias heard reports of their appearance in various parts of tlie country, but none in this vicinity except on his own lann, although he expects them to become very plentiful hi the next few weeks. In the East, where the season is more advanced, they have already made their appearance in considerable numbers. The seventeen-year locusts, as they are eaUed, have wich a peculiar way of conducting and propagating themselves that there are many popular fallacies about them. Their seientilic name, given them by Linneus is "Cicada Septeiudecim ’ and they are not locusts ut ail, hut belong to the same family as the ordinary harvest-tly. Tlie locust spoken of in the Bible is ourcommon grasshopper. According to a number of authorities the last visitation of the locusts iu this country was in IbtiS and their return this year was tirsl announced by Professor C. V. Klley, eiitomoiOgh-t of the Agricultural Department ut Washington. The insects are very susceptible to cold and moisture, and for this reason their arrival is oiten delayed ou account Of the weather. They are buried very deep iu the ground, where they have resided, it is supposed for seventeen years, and when they conic out they arc incased iu a heavy black shell or jacket which comes off after exposure to the hot sun—and they are then ready for business. As a matter of fact the male Insect is a purely ornamental cuss and does nothing particularly hut loaf about and make a disagreeable noise, something like a tattoo on a drum. The female is kept extremely busy. 8lie attaches herself to the small limbs of trees, preferring the oak, but using almost any kind, and In these she makes small fissure*, sometime* forty or fifty iu a limb, in which she deposits eggs. 8he goes from tree to tree until her four or five thousand eggs are cxliausted, and then site complacently lays dowu and dies, het mission on earth having been fulfilled. The young insect is hatched out iu about forty or liity days, falls to the ground and burrows in it, remaining there for seventeen years, deriving nis sustenance from the roots of trees. So far Os is known, the locusts, during their brief stay ou the surface, eat nothing—their only mission being reproduction. The principal damage tbey do is by boring in the limbs of trees, which generally drop off. They do not sting or bite people themselves, as is eoiytnonly supposed, but when they are plentiful they are ireuuently accompanied by a very dangerous kind of a wasp, which lives off’ them, and whose sting is very painful and dangerous, sometimes being fatal, FATALITY AMONG RAILROADERS
lit Which Some Interesting cences Are Given.
Remlnis-
The statistical reports cause it to appear fhut ouly one ffipu iu many thousands who ride on*the rail is ever injured, but uu obstr< aiiOu ot the career of a number of train men wili Snow that, sooner or later, nearly ail of them come to their death or injur)' iu wrecks or by other accident ou the road. A railroader who was injured this week in a wreck was talking iu this struiu to-day. Be said: "I nad been on the road so long without receiving a scratch i ha i thought 1 bore a c‘armed iBe, but 1 how believe, what others have lold me, that it's only a que-tion of time when ever)' railroader m.-eis with disaster while iu the perf r uanee ot duty. The fascination of railroading is not destroyed, either, by a single wreck. Now, there's Johnny King, conductor on tlie I. & St. L. He is a veteran in experience with wrecks. He is seamed and scarred from head to foot. King was a iireman on one of the engines w recked at the close of the war near Lafayette at the spot since called dead men's curve. That was one of the worst wrecks that ever occurred in Indiana, and a Grange thing about it was that it was due to the carelessness of one of tlie best engineers on the old Lafayette (now Big Four) Road. He was engineer of a freight, aud King was his fireman. A traiu of many cars of veteran* returning from the w ar had the right of way, hut the freight, by some mistake of the engineers, failed to side track, and tiie two came together at tlie curve. The soldier train was frightfully wrecked. The dead aud dying soldiers were thicker titan ou the battle-field, and being so near home after years of service at the front their loss was especially lamentable. If 1 remember correctly, about thirty w ere killed, and the curses of their comrades over the criminality of the careless engineer, supplemented later by tlie lamentation of the friends of the dead in Lafayette, made impressions which 1 shall never forget The engineer disappeared and has never been seen in Indiana to thisday. As I told you. he had been a most competent man and it was supposed for year* that lie had committed suicide. But uot loug ago I heard from him. He went far West, showed hi* capability and is now road-master of one of the priuciptd divisions of a western trunk line. But to return to King; be escaped and atterward became euglueer on the l. Ji SL L. One night his train ran iut» some ties that had been washed upon the trick by au Overflowed stream. The cars lunged forward and several of them jumped clear over the eugine. Kmg was buried iu the rums, and allhougu terribly bruised about the head aud hip*, lived to walk again without crutches and today is a reasonably sound man ' O, Glva the Boy* a Chance. To the Editor of The Indianapolis New s: Can you tell me, are the streets of Indispoils about to he given up to theaspiriug baseball fiend? Yesterday afternoon iu the course of half an hour's drive i came upon uo less than six difierent crowds of yalling, racing boys, all engaged with bat and ball in the middle of the streets. On the corner of Ohio aud Mississippi streets one of our gallant metropolitan police might have found use tar hi* awful eye aud strong right arm in a not unusual scene w hich occurred.
