The Sentinel is sorely punishing the Times over its foolish boast of printing a larger quantity of advertising than any other city paper. The object of the Times’ boast is to have some one infer that it is thought to be the best advertising medium. The Sentinel pricks that bubble by showing that a large amount of advertising is done in the Times for a little or no pay. Well, this does make a difference: but then, neighbors, you both do err in supposing that the public Is at all misled by these things. A great deal of time, and money also, has bacu, devoted to the “fixing” of public opinion, but after all the dear public has a marvelous way of dropping on to the bottom facts. If our neighbors are really solicitous to aid the advertiser let them publish their true circulation. This it is, and nothing else the advertiser Is after. The present overage of The News is over 15,000 copies daily, and no papers sent out promiscuously to be returned by agents if not sold. The bonaflde circulation of The News Is now larger than the Journal, Sentinel and Times combined, and contracts for advertising will be conditioned on this claim. The Railroads, The Big Four train which left this city at noon for Cincinnati, will probably run through to Its destination; at least It is the purpoae to run to Delhi, whence Cincinnati, eight miles distant, may be reached by hack. The water In the tunnel Is n.'t deep, and the track has not been damaged by its long soak. No through trains have ruu over this divirion for fifteen da?*. The earnings of the I. B. A W., second week In February, show a decrease,—an ex pected result of the recent floods. The carvings of all Indianapolis roads are comparatively light. Business is so light that the Big Four’s Cincinnati division has lost little money, although idle. Train Master Griggs, of the C. H. A D., will probably accept a position oa the Eaat Tennessee, Virginia * Georgia,
MM MM. A BAD BLOW. CoBtiderabie Damage Done to Flooded Property by Last Right's Storm. Last night’s storm did great damage in the flooded districts. New Albany reports her situation as gloomy and deplorable. Many houses were wrecked piecemeal. Another appeal for aid has been made by the relief committee. Mayor Blenk&mp, of Aurora, appealed to Secretary Lincoln, asking that a portion of the congressional appropriation te apportioned to that town for the puroose of enabling owners of houses to rebuild and repair their dwellings, but the secretary replied: The act of congress does not J think, justify me in furnishing money to rebuild or restore booses. However meritorious this may be. my authority is limited to furnishing subilston -e stores, clothing and other necessary artMes. If tent* would be of any nse. there are a few which 1 have placed under the control of General Beckwith, at Cincinnati. If needed, make applicatlan by telegraph to him. The gale extended down the river as far as Cairo, and at Paducah, Ky., a tobacco warehouse was blown down.' At Cairo a force of men is watching and placing sand bags in the washed places, and everything possible is being done to keep the levees intact. The levee at Mound City still holds. Bulkheads are being built, and sand bags placed over threatened places. Gen. Beckwith reports to the secretary of war that “from Wheeling to Cairo, along both banks, there is not a man, woman or child that pines for food.” The general tenor of the telegrams is that the supplies already distributed are amply sufficient to meet all present needs. The secretary has authorized Gen. Beckwith to make use of UtM hospital tents at Jeffersonville for furnishing shelter to the inhabitants of the flooded districts whose homes have been washed away. He has also notified him that there are 2,000 secondhand tents at Philadelphia which may be utilized for the same purpose. There is yet unexpended $100,000 of the $500,000 appropriated. The relief steamer, Gee. Pike, made the ti Ip from Aurora to Madison yesterday and distributed supplies for about 1,500 persons. The boat went back £0 Cincinnati to day, disposing of the remainder of its stores on the way. Damage About Cairo. Cairo, 111., February 20.—The storm of yesterday did no damage here, although the velocity of the wind at one time was sixty miles an hour. At Metropolis it blew down some forty houses, including one church, and Injuring several people, but, as far as learned, none fatally. Among tire injured are Captain J. C. Willis, who had a leg broken. Reports are very meager. It was also reported that several persons were supposed to be lost from boats and skills, but the report is not substantiated. At Paducah, the tobacco warehouse of Buckner Co., and Chess Carley’s oil warehouse, are the only houses reported de • strovtd. No damage reported at Mound City. The river here is fifty-one feet six inches, and rising slowly. But little damage was done to the levees last night. Clear and cold to-day. An I gly Scene at Madison. [Special dispatch to The Indianapolis News.[ Madison, February 20.—The river has fallen here only seven feet in all, and is now falling at the rate of about an inch an hour. The high winds last night retarded the falling. The wind storm caused great destruction of pro»erty along the river. Several houses were completely destroyed. The large w barf tioat broke loose and demolished the Lanier residence, kuocked In the front of Davis’a canning factory, and did other damage. The scene is terribly ugly to-day. Boat* RcMniiiing at Cincinnati. Cincinnati, O.,February 20.—The river is fifty-eight feet eleven inches; falimj; one inch an hour. Clear. Thermometer 33’. The mornine mall departed at noon for Maysvllle. The Big Sandy company will start a line to Pomeroy this afternoon. Down river boats will not be able to resume before 8aturday : Xonisville Property Damaged. Louisville, February 20.—The river Is falling slowly—forty-three feet and eight Inches by the canal marks at noon. The storm last night was fearful to the flooded property. _______ Flood Notes, Newport has received $5,000 appropriated by the State. The Mayor of New York has received nearly $10,000 for the flood suffers. The Mississippi Is rising half an inch an hour at St. Louis. People on the low lauds b$low Memphis are in alarm. The babe that was born In the court house at Lawrenceburg Sunday has been christened Ohio Flood Walllugferd. Secretary Lincoln will distribute no more money through the mayors of towns, but transact aU his relief business through army officers. It is stated by one who has tried the experiment that an inside coat of paint will render buildings which have been flooded safe from damp. Two young flood sufferers, F. B. Mousler and Minnie Zimmerman, met for the first time at the fourth district school lodgings, Cincinnati, and yesterday were married. A musical cutertaiumeut given by six children, the oldest only twelve years, at Waterford, Pa., Monday, for the relief of the flood sufferers, realized $51.21. The money was sent to the Red Cross society at Cincinnati. Cincinnati will have gas again on Thursday night. The relief headquarters and soup houses were closed to-day. Freight is being taken by some of the railroads. Tenants of buildings In the flooded district are moving to secure a reduction of rent. HELP FOR THE FLOODED. Mr. McKay, of the committee, has gone to Lawrenceburg: Mr. Lynch to New riJbatty, and Mr. Malott to Evansville, to determine what farther calls for assistance may be expected. The Air Line relief contribution, started by Mr. Brecrmnt from this city, swelled to two car loads of supplies, besides cash, between this city and Monon.
