Hie 1‘rtnee of Wales’* SleeplneM. Apropos of the serious illness ot the Prince of Wales, the following paragraph, from a late London paper, almost foreshadowing his present condition, will be read with interest: “The habits of the Prince of Wales have apparently produced an affection of the brain, which shows itself in extraordinary sleepiness. At performances of serious operas and plays, he is constantly seen sleeping profoundly in his box; only opera bouffe or undress ballet can keep him awake. Americans who witnessed the wonderfully impressive Passion Play, last summer, at Oberammergau, in Bavaria, were treated also to the sight of the Prince of Wales, seated with the Princess and her ladies, and sleeping soundly through it ail. Such drowsiness is morbid, and indicates softening of the brain, which may terminate in paralysis.” "Love's Labor Lost." The New York Observer adduces as a remarkable instance of useless labor, a book which was recently exhibited in a London shop window. It was a volume in manuscript, handsomely bound in gilt, and written with extraordinary care and neatness, containing 40C pages of three columns each. It was without a single idea, and what is re, it contained but a single word. The stery was explained by its title page, wh i along as follows: Thirty-three Tit Five Hundred and Thirty-five Wi telling ‘‘Scissors.’’

The Tributte of this morning says: It is certain thaVit is Tweed's design to remain Concealed Until he can take his seat in the Senate. This pafpuse has been «msi»ected for aorhe time, hut it will not save him from arre*t. It is known that steps haV'e already been taken sHiiCh Vrill defeat this scheme, and that he will be dislodged from concealment and rearrested on charges graver than
yet made against him.
The following is an exact copy of the order signed by Farley, authorizing the arrest of Tweed' “I hereby deputize authority fend appoint JudJofl Jarvis to seize and surrender the within named WjllkKn M. Tweed to the custody of the Sheriff of the city and county of New York. In exonefiation of himself aud his surety on the understanding of which the within is a certified copy.”
In the presence of Joel J. Stevens, [Signed] Terrance Farley, New York, DecetUbef Wtji, 187J.
The Tribune says that notwithstanding all the assertions to the contrary Tweed's resignation, not only as Grand Sachem o( rfie Tammany Society has been demanded, but even as a member of that Society, and as Tweed has expressed a desire to comply with their requests, it is believed that his resignation is now in the hands of Nicholson, who
refrains from making it public.
The Tribune continues: It is very well understood that Tweed can not obtain bail. Itwffi? stated yesterday that owing tolas complications it would be impossible for him to raise $250,000, Of obtain security in $100,000, and there is probably nothing left him
but flight or imprisonment.

Chicago, December 28.—Edward Powers, Civil Engineer of this city, has petitioned Congress for aid in making an experiment for the artificial production of rain by means of gunpowder and cannons. He asks the use of 300 pieces of ordnance of the United States, not less than twelve pounders, 20,000 blank cartridges, ten miles of insulated wire, an electrical battery and such men as he may need, and that transportation may be fur-
nished.

He being absent, another and finally another waa sought. At last the Rev. While it was yet in motion the author of the telegram leaped from the cars, and running up to offi «er A , informed him that the couple were in the rear car in waiting. There was not much time to lose, and to the rear end of the train the official and minister sped with almost the celcrifr of light. Arnold entered the car at one end, Dr. at the other. With solemn tread they proceeded along the aisle until they met near the center of the. car. The doctor scanned the passengers closely, and finally inquired of the officer which the couple were. ‘T think this is the couple,” said he. pointing to a young man and young woman occupying a seat near him. The clergyman advanced toward them, and inv a clear, slow voice said; “Are you the couple who desire to be married V” They made, no answer, but appeared to be utterly confused and dumbfounded. They turned all sorts of colors, and the minister began to think there was a mistake somewhere. By and by the whistle sounded ant! the train left for New Haven, carrying the lady and gentleman along writh it, while the officer and minister stayed behind. The af-' fair was then explained by the gentleman who had sent the telegram and who had witnessed the whole joke, as follows: The couple bad attracted a good deal of attention on the passage by their affectionate kisses and embracess and he concluded to play a trick on tl»em that would, perhaps, operate beneficially, hence the telegram. He gave the minister five dollars for his trouble, and also paid the expenses of the hack, and in that way squared the joke. Judge Learned of Albany. It is understood to-night that the chief object of Tweed in avoiding an arrest was t-^. be able to hold his beat in the Legslature* which meets next week. It is stated on good authority that he has already made arrangements to get into his seat, and defy all attempts to oust him The grand jury’s term expires on- the 30th, and if it is not extended Tweed will be safe from indictment after his term of service begins. Judge Bedford promised at the rime or the last extension of the grand jury’s term to make another extension if asked for, and it is probable the extension will be sought to make sure of keeping Tweed out ol *he Senate. None of the indictments have been taken in court This week the jury is in session daily and is expected to make an other sensation before long.
