A batcher, who wishes his name suppressed, waa arrested and ftned for selliag ball beef. ArmrmD Scicioa.—John Ulrfch, a Penney 1 Tania German, aged about thirty-two years, made an attempt to coauait suicide at twelve o dock to-day, in the Sicking House, on South Dlinoia street. He had been drinking hard for two or three weeks past, and was sniftering with delirium tremens, which, k is supposed, the act. Thia morning, about ten o’clock. Jack Baser, a policeman, stepped into the office of the bouse, where Firkh was fritting, and asked him bow he felt. Ulrich replied that he wae better, sad arose to return to bis room in the third story, where the act was committed. About twelve o’clock Baser returned to the house, and went up to the room, where he found Ulriefa lying on the floor, his head under the bed, and the floor covered with blood. Ulrieh had stood before a glaea and attempted to eever the jugular rein, but succeded in making a slight incision only. He used a common threo-bladed pen-knife for the purpoee. Baser finding that he waa not dead, raised him on the bed, and went for Dr. Allen of the Surgical Institute, who came in dressed the wound. Finch's chances for recovery are duboua, owing to Use state of his health at the itm* ho committed the act. If he had been in good condition he would soon recover, bat haring the delirium tremens and the throat cut besides, bo will probly die. From persons acquainted with him we learn the following facts in regard to his life: He was originally from Beading, Pennsylvania, where be bae awifo and brother living. Before the war, he was in the poatoffice there, a trusted and respected derk. Bb went into the army, remaining till the close of the war, but on coming out he indulged in sprees to such an extent, that his father-in-law drove him from the house. , He came here and entered into the employ of Hume, Adams A Co., where he stayed foe about one year, and then was employed in the New York Store. If he had left whisky alone he would to-day have held an important and honorable position, that of buyer for the establishment. But he did not, and his employers were obliged to dismiss him a week ago Tuesday, since which time he has been drinking to the excess which culminated in the sad

tragedy at noon.

An unusual number of accidents occurred this morning in different parts of the city. John Doolan, a boy who was driving an express wagon, fell off on Washington street and received a very bad wound in the head, his forehead being reverely cut. He was carried to the Surgical Institute, where proper atten-

tion mas bestowed Upou his injuries. ;

The foreman of a gang of hands at the Indianapolis, Cincinnati A Lafayette Railroad freight depot, while removing a barrel got his hand frightfully mashed, the flesh being lit-

erally stripped from two fingers.

William Sutton, a carpenter in Sinker A Co.'s shop, while turning a lathe was struck over the eye by a chip, which flew up, and cut him badly. His eye-will probably be serious-

ly injured.

The excursion is going to be a big thing, the best that could possibly be for the city, and we hope all our business men will be alive to the fact. Professor Cox has gone to Cincinnati to-day to invite the iron men there to attend. The poet-offioes at Lebaron and Thorntown were robbed last night of stamps, cash and letters, the amount of which are not known.
