Therv taa traack ml that piraüc-il couraet which aom-times gires the air of heroism to what is but resolut rascal' ity. in ruch an opea defiane of Law ana nirni. we congratulate our friend on their demonstration, for a plain statement wares mviy mistakes , ad mach argument. We know exactly where thej arc now. mrin let the .1 point out their position, it mar only be fair to t-Von them to point ot the war ihej got . into it. Here aro the premises on which they build the abore startling conclusion. "These propositions are political majtims: Cuba must be ours; and she must . be oars at the risk of war." Two additional propositions, equally de r, are these: !. TheJOorernmentof Cubs if that can be called a government which fulfils none of the conditions of the social compact s the most corrupt and iniquitous on earth. 2 Every inhabitant of Cuba, with three grains of sense, who is not an oGce holder or office seeker under the 8prmh government, that is to say. erery disinterested lover of the welfare of the IIand, must desire its independence and annexation to the United States." Without questioning the truth of these statements, we must be allowed to think tht, rnrj queer lo-.jic. which infers because we are sure to own a piece of property at some time, that it is just a right to steal it at once. We don't understand, and the Sentinel don't stop to explain, why it is that a bad government can be more righteously robbed than another. That it may have come by the booty unlawfully is nothing to justify anothri scoundrel, who robs not to restore to the right owner, but to keep himself. Moreover the " Sentinel's proposition, that a corrupt and iniquitous government msy be lawfully cheated and beVen by anybody who has the skill or the courage to do it, is dangerously broad. It would expose half the Governments of the world to destruction bv the other half, and yet nobody be able to trli which merited destruction most. Under such administration as the present, even our own country could have no security agxinst a filibustering expedition used by the band of justice to punish our national Ttces. A plain statement of the mit'er gives a cletrer idea of the moral delinqaen cy of Q jitman and his pirates, than forty columns of dissertation. Here it U: Cab belongs to Spain. We have no more to do with it than with Sicilv . orCjprua. Moreover, we are bouad 1 Dy trriity to abstain from any invasion or conniving at any invasion of it. Q tiiman proposes to take it by force. That is the whole matter. What the pretext of the invasion may bv, is utterly unimportant. His scheme is .simple robbery if bis Government opposes it, national robbe rv if it conaires at it or ignores it. An invasion of England by a b-ind of marauders, would be a more eourageon. but not a more iniquitous act than this applauded descent upon Cub. Tt s. it, if possible, more plainly, change the positions of the parties Suppose La Cronlca should procl.t m Pierce's adminis'rntion a most .corrupt and iniquitous governmeiit, cite thai continual defeats of his par y, and the hearty contempt expressed for it by the whole nation "txcept officeseekers and oSce-holders." as a proof that the people w uite 1 a change, point to its deeapatation of post-masters Slid custom house w t'cli neu. as a proof of. its tyranny, and a '.vise an immedirte invasion of the cou rry by toon Tjjn Quitman and hi hired scoundrel, couldn't it as with jjst us good a grace astheSa-aiW: "Who will hare the unblushing hardihood to charge the slightest taint of moral delinquency ott Gen. Quitman and his gallant com raeds?!" The caseJare exactly simitlar to the minutest shade of a moral distinction. Suf dos we apply the doctrine to the case of an individual. A. owns a farm &nd B. wants it, but don't care about buying. He has found a cheaper plan, lie aaya to himself: "A. don't use that (arm right. lie plants corn where 1.3 ought to put wheat, and cuts his clover just at the best time to rot the whole cop. Of course he will starve bis stock. I know he will. lie can't help it. Now, though in its inception it may look like invasion, its results may justify it a benificent deliverance if i go over and kick him off, take his farm, and see that the stocks gets enough to eat. Ilia mismanagement entitles me to take his property from him, and "who will have the moral hardihood ti charge a taint of moral ' delinquency' on such a generous ac;?" "The end justifies the means," say. our farm-stealer. So say the Jesuit. S- says the Stntintl. And it with auch an unchristian argument it would justify such an infamous act. Verily the end and the means irlthat case are worths of eachother.- Indiana Jor not. LToosa cf Etfuge. Thus, to the late Legislature, decried, and derided as it has been, belongs the honor of initiating the two greatest reformations ever attempted in the Slate. It has given us ;i prohibitory liquor law to cutoff the sources of crime, and a House of Refuge as a means of allowing reformatory influences to operate with ont the hindrance of vile ns!ocTal!on7 And of checking vice befuruit hits grown into confirmed depravisy. THE INDIANA AHEEICAN.
Tlin alarm that was caused by the hard t'mes, which was resulting In eeusinjr many papt rs to suspend entirely, and sell out. and which caused many old and established papers to reduce their dimensions, deterred us from mskinf the enlarjement we hod cortemplateil, at the beginning ol the Tolüran. Tiouijh thwar. ted, for tho time being, we still kept our purpose in view, and now present the pati jns and lorrowen ofths Auekicas, The Largest Paper in Indiana. And, if it is net th Ixst paper, it shall not be for want of unceasing application

Hut this has const mtly increase J, njtwitlistnr.din j the discouraffing circumsanccs of the past year, nnj we now have a circulation that justifies' the expenditure we have made in enlarging. In addition to the embarrassment which grew out of our want of experience ns an editor, we wcro. somewhat alarmed at the fears of many personal friend.. They thought it impossible for-us to succeed, unless wo should consent to become the Orgio of some party. But haring long ago settled in our mind tint parties will become corrupt, aud that they are usually kept in ex istenco lor the benefiit of a few aspirants, we determined to, pursue our chosen course, in J fail, if fail we must, in attempting to publish tt paper that should be truly independent. The readers of the American know fujl well, that we do not mean by being independent, that we will not take sides for or against the question t inu;. It has not ben hard to tell on which side of any question we have been, iwr shall if be in future. Wc mean to say, that no caucus or convention, no wirrwarn r council, or tribe, shall dictate what we may say or may not say. We know everybody know, that a paper that sells itself to party, mutt leave unreproved the political blunders or tlinhonecties of its party, and distort and misrepresent the acts of its opponents. We have certainly tried to avoid these errors, and thall continue to try in future. How far we have succeeded, we leave with our catid'd, comtaul leaders. How far we shall succeed in future, must be judg ed by the luture. On the questions now atissue, we need not del) ne our position. It is not an equivocal one, as our readers well know.
