KLAN PARADES DESPITE RAIN Thousands Cheer Marion County Procession 5,000 in Line of March (Continued from Page 1) eons sitting on the curb awaiting their arrival. When theso watchful waiters sighted the procession they sprang up and were joined by thousands of other interested citizens. At the head of the parade rode a squadron of motorcycle police, followed by Ollie C. Mathis, grand marshal of the parade, who was mounted on horseback. There followed more than a score of robed horsemen. The official of Marion County Klan No. 3, In their rel satin uniforms, walked at the head of the marchers. Klectrlcal bells, mounted on an automobile from John Tipton Klan No. E0, of Tipton, nnd the musical organizations of the local Klan provided music for thi? marchers. Montgomery Klnn No. 23, of Crawfordsville. carried a mammoth American (lag. Four cither large American flags were carried l.y scores of marchers. I.lltlc Klnnsmrn Infant Klansmen were prominent In the twenty-flve floats and truck3 that punctuated the procession. On of these floats, from Wayne township, represented a schoolroom, with n rlaNH of pnpils singing "America." On the blackboard was written. "The Klan is going to put the Ilible in the publ c school." l".stlfe for All," a beautiful float, portraying Justice, with balanced scales, drew much applause along the line of march. The Marlon County Junior organization marched behind a large banner that bore the legend, "Marlon County Junior Ku Klux Klan." "One School. One Language, Ore Iliblr." appeared on many of the floats and "The Little lied Schoolhnur," was prominent. Capitol avenue, -..here a colored oflicer abiy (,'lrcted traffic before the parale aril remained on duty while: the procession passed. At the meeting of the local organ- I Ization the night before the parade, ii speaker from the state office of the Klan explained the organization's program for the winter. He laid stress on the fact that the Itoman Catholic corporation fell heir to the brutalities and Jjprtures of pagan Home and that churchmen who have encouraged wide reading of the Holy Ulble have met with opposition from the Koman church. Attendance at the meetings of the local Klan Is constantly Increasing and applications for membership are pouring in. They said that the wind was blowing Into their cell from n open window. Sheriff Winter said he believed the men were doped so they could not frustrate Manning's escape. Brhwnrs Anil fichwars has been a leader of the. . nntl-Klun faction here. Permission for the Klan to participate In tl lfnsfl Day program and parade was denied by city officials of' Lawrenoeburg. Bootleggers and law violator of every description have thrived here under the eyes of the police force of which Bchwari has been chief. Klannmen of this community have made strenuous efforts to have the law enforced, but Information of law violations supplied by Klansmen has been Ignored time and again by the officers. Enemy' Boycott Fall "The method of boycott resorted to by the opposition to Injure the business man who Is accredited with being a Klansman has utterly failed and has only slapped back in the faces of those who fostered it. Only one store has closed Its doors in the last year and the proprietor was not a Klansman. but one who has denounced the Klan and aided In the boycott of presumed Klansmen. "The Klan Is not dead in Slarke county, neither has It served its full purpose. In fact, it has only began to grow In its activities, yef it has done more for this community than all of the other organisations, civic or fraternal, in the county, "The Protestant ministers find their churches filled with men every Sunday (some of them men who had almost forgotten what the Inside of a church looked like), and every man willing to do his part in the work of the churches. The Protestant ministers do net hesitate to say that the Klan has brought about a revival of things spiritual that Is pleising indeed. "Last week the -Knights of the

It is there always, as elusive as subtle poison and as deadly. It seeps into the receptive mind of a young student, deadening and des'.mying his former ideas, that his newly acquired thoughts ran !e guided by super-skillful hands along the prepared grooves of Roman Catholic culture, a culture that, white It dims the magnlticer.ee of his own country, dwarfs the deeds of his country's heroes ami mr.rtyra and dwells lightly on the religion of 1,1s own hearthaiui.r, at me same uni. mannires the Paries- of Catttollo Pome, sanoii the historic cruelties: of eai-iv Catholic conquest and puts a bright halo around the ;irsi u' -day mummeries of the Catholic church in America. OFFICERS ELECTED JACKSON, Mich. At a recent meeting the Juniors of Jackson held an election of officers for the coming term. The field director did not preside over the meeting, his place being taken by the Worthy Knight. This will continue to be the rule on all elections and at all initiation ceremonies conducted by the Jackson Juniors. CRT E.MCRAVED GAVEL LOS ANGELES, Cal. The Klavaliers of the Los Ane-eles Spnlur Tflan visited the Klavern of the .Innlnr Klan recently and presented the I Worthy Knight wfth an engraved 1 gavel. The gavel was presented In military style. More than forty Klavallers made -the. presentation through their leader. Los Angeles Juniors are growing swiftly and solidly. IX TWENTY TOWXS PITMAN. N. J. Jersey Juniors in Gloucester county have a membership in twenty towns. , The meetings in Pitman are no small affairs. In the Klavern recently the local Juniors had a debate on: "Itesolved, thar the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan Is an organization beneficial to the United States." Words flew thick and fast. On deportment, bearing and the manner In which facts were presented, the decision went by one vote to th Mgative. The field director then

Hand of Charity "Hundreds of homes have been made cheerful by the Klan, food and clothing have been provided for those who were not financially able to care for themselves, not only at the Christmas season but throughout the year. "No, the Klan Is not done. Not yet. A program of activity for the coming year is being constructed that when put into operation will change the minds of the most skeptical, because it is filled with work Intended for the good of the community and all who make up the citizenry. "The Bible has been placed In every schoolroom in the county by the Women of the Ku Klux Klan and the American flag flies above every free public school. The boys and -girU demand that the Bible be read every day and are thanking the Klansmen and Klanswomen for the return to the schools of the flag and Bible. ' Those who are so anxious to see the Klan go might just as well abandon the Idea and begin at once to take an interest in the county and become law-abiding citizens, for the Klan is in Starke county to stay." "So much for the judge's eonfession of prejudiced training. As for ! the body of his address in which much harped 'tolerance' was the attempted keynote, it creates nn astonishment In the minds of an intelligent people. In every single phras. aside from the tirades against the Ku Klux Klan, it is absolutely pro-K4an. It holds forth for every single Idoal advanced try the Klan. It lauds the very measures that the Klan is so earnestly fijrhtim.- for Th following excerpt has the actual ac pearance of a Klansman's creed, and shows the boomerang nature of his address: 'I testify to the religion of all peoples. I befWve In allowing each man to believe as he desires whether It conforms to riy Ideas or not. I have learned to love humanity, to love the good that is in humanity! I am here first as an American citizen, as I understand that term, and, second, as a man who believes in the complete abolition of all bigotry, und the granting of tolerance in religion, politics and all the other phases of our life.' "The only thing lacking to make this declaration complete is 'and I do not intend to allow a foreign pojie, seated in a foreign land, to dictate to me the management of my country, my politics, my finances and my household." "If I were a gambler I would make two wagers with Judge Ben B. Lindsey first, that his professed views of tolerance were not learned at Notre Dame University: second, that 75
