MONETARY & COMMERCIAL.
WEEKLY RET IE TV'. The call for money is hardly so pressing, though fully up to the means of supply. The rate in bank is firm at 12 per cent., and on the street from 12 to 15 per cent, is asked. Returns from produce shipments are coming in slowly, affording some relief. The policy of the Government as to the currency, will be determined this week, and will doubtless continue the present expansion. ' It will be well to have this question of contraction or expansion aettled, that the country may" ho longer "deceive itself as to the practical results, We shall soon learn how far, continued expansion will realize . the expectations ot its advocates.- " ' .'. Country merchants have been unable to sendsthelr orders, much less receive their goods. The country roads are in a most deplorable condition, and farmers have found it impossible to transport their prouce, or even themselves, to their various neighborhood stores. The consequence is, all branches of business feel a depressing influence, that will have to be endured until the waters subside, and the roads are once more passable.' Our commission men and pork establishments, however, seem to be busy, shipping cotton and other products, and filling orders for provisions. . Most ot the orders for meat are from the Tenn.essen River country, which depends almost entirely npon our city for the necessaries t of life. But our manufacturing establishments seem not to feel the depression realized by the merchants. Most of ' them are working full sets of bands, and having all they can do to fill ont their orders, and accumulate a stock for the Spring trade. ' " ," ; .. ' In dry-goods and grvwilw tb. tA4t w. . been dull, from causes above specifiedThe demand on Southern orders has not been so great as dnrlng the previous week. But few ol our merchants have gone East to lay In their stocks. Daring the pres. ent and the ensuing week, we anticipate a general heglra. All 0 our business men have confidence In the trade of the city during the spring and summer, and will show their confidence by importing large stocks of goods. . GROCERY MARKET. The trade has been dull, with very little change in prices. Coffee seems to be firmer with a disposition to advanee, while there Is a continued decline in nails. . Boots and Shoes. Merchants in. this line of business experience with others, that times are exceedingly dull, but they are hopeful, and will have full stocks when
the water will allow communication with their customers. Hats and Caps and Clothing. The present month is a transition period be tween the closing of Winter atid the open Ing of the Spring trade a season when our merchants are not expecting a very large trade in their line., When the Spring trade does pen, we are confident inducements will be offered in our city that will cause many merchants to send their orders here in preference to visiting Cincinnati, Louisville or St. Louis. Queensware. Business continues duU, No changes in quotations have been given ns. The season has been unusually ad. verse to the Queensware trade. Between the ice and the flood, our merchants have been cut off almost entliely from their cus tomers during the greater part of the win. ter. This will only give them the better stocks with which to operate when the floods subside, and Spring comes a f smil ing guest." , . ' . Iron and Hardware.
