V pi WIT AND SENTIMENT. ... Withhold not thy money where there is need, ami waste it not where there is none. What do the young ladie3 look for in church ? The hims. The best way to treat slander is to let it alone and say nothing about it. It soon dies when fed on silent contempt. Endeavor to have a comely grace in holding thy peace, and a lively force of speaking. If thou wouldat converse profitably, thou must endeavor to be among those that either may be made butter, or else make thee better. Let the society thou frequentest be like ft company tf bees gathered together to make honey, aad not of wasps, which do DothiDg but hum, devour and sling. A witty fellow slipped down on an icy pavement. While sitting, he muttered, " I have do desire to see the town burned down, but I sincerely wish the streets were laid in nhe3." - : A distinguished clergyman being requested to open the services with prayer, but not having been invited to preach, declined, saying that "as hi3 friend was going to do the mowing, he might whet his own scythe." A fat gentleman in discussing a warm breakfast at a tavern, called to the waiter : 'Doual, bring me some more bread ; I eat a great deal of bread to my steak.' ' Yes, sir,' answered the waiter with much simplicity, ' and ye eat a great deal of steak to your bread.' A modern poet thus criticizes some church-going people: 'Attend your church," the parson cries, To church each lair on goes, Tli i old go thdre to close their eyes, The young to eje their clothes. Hibersiax Intelligence. An Irishman who was standing on London Bridge, accosted a youth standing beside him, saying : " Faith, I think I know yer ; wuat's yer name " My name is Jones," replied tho youth. " Jones, Jones' said the Irishman, " I knew two ould maids by that name in Dublin ; was either of them yer mother ? A Poetical TamuTE to Maj. Andersox. T. B. A few f tots upon this po?nt will Sieak more powerfully than volumes of bare assertion or blazoning puffiry. The consumption of llostetter's Stomach Bitters for the last year amounted to over a half million bottles, and from its manifest au. dy increase in times past, it is evident that during the coming year, the consumption will reach near one million bot.les. This immense amount could never have been sold but for the rare medicinal properties contain id in the preparation, und the sanction of the most prominent physicians in those sections of the country wtiere the article is tiest Known, who not only recommend the Bitters to their patients, but are ready at all times to give testimonials to its efficacy iu all cases of stoninchic derangements and the diseases resulting therefrom. This is not a temporary popularity, obta;ned by extraordinary efforts in the way of trumpeting the qualities of the Bitters, but a solid estimation of an invaluable medicine, which is destiued to bo as en during as time itself. llostetter's Stomach Bitters have proved a Godsend to regions where fever and ague aim various other bil'ous complaints have counted tiieir victims by hundreds. To bo able to state confidently that the "Bitters" are a certain cure for the Dyspepsia and like diseases, is to the proprietors a source of unalloyed pleasure. . It removes all mor bid matter from the stomach, purities the blood, and imparts renewed vitality to the nervous system, giving it that tone and energy indifipensab'e for the restoration of health. - It operates upon tho stomach, liver, aud other digestive organs, mildly bnt powerfully, and soon restores them to a condition essential to the healthy discharge of 'the functions of nature. Elderly persons may use the Bitters daity as per directions on tho bottle, and they will find in it a stimulant peculiarly adapted to comfort declining years, as it is pleasant to the palate, invigorating to the Isiwels. excellent as a tonic, and rejuvenating generally. We have the evidence of thousands of aged meu and omen who have experienced the benefit of using this preparation while suffering from stomach derangements and general debility ; acting under tho advico of Physicians, thev have abandoned all deleterious drugs, and fairly tested tho merits of this article. A few words to the gen tler sex. There are certain periods when their cares are so harrassiug that many of theiusink uuder the trial. The relation of mother and cfc ild is so absorbingly tender, that tiie mother, especially if she lie young, is apt to forg-t her own health in her extreme anxiety for her infant. Should the period of maternity arrive during the summer sea son, the wear of body and mind is generally agx ravated. Here, then, is a necessity lor a stinv laut to recuperate the energies of thu system, and en able the mother to bear up nnder ber exhausting trials and respiinsioiuties. jNursing mothers generally prefer the Bitters to all other invigoratoi s that receive the endorsement of physicians, because it is agreeable to the taste as well as certaint give a permanent increase of bodily strength.
