TbeCanvaaa. The position which Judge Ho?ey has assumed, as a candidate for Congress is more heartilj and generali approved than we expected. The honest men of all parties, are tired and disgusted with Ute frauds and tyranny of the caucus system of nomination,' and many are ready to support, eien a political opponent, who has the manliness and moral courage to defy the cliques -who have heretofore managed to foist their instruments into every public place, through the machinery of political conventions, the very cest pools of political corruption. The people demand now a free field, and a . fair contest far merit and popularity, where ilLcittzeas ujav contend for the

the permission or a few dominant party leaders, or needing the endorsement of a packed political cabal. The success of Judge Hovey, which is assured, will uproot the infamous caucus plots, by which mercenary politicians have maintained their power and corrupted every branch of the public service. Honest men of all parties are willing to forget honest differences of opinions in past contests, and unite upon any one who is honest and capable, and right upon the present great leading issue; and by whose election they can break the power of the abettors of Executive encroachments and usurpations. We are glad to see that the Republicans will not bring out a candidate in opposition to the Judge; and what is still more cheering in the prospects of tha independent candidate, we are assured of the hearty and powerful co-operation cf tho German voters. Their popular organ, the "Volksbote," & sterling Democratic sheet, will give its cordial and efficient support to the Judge, and we learn that the German vote through the District will be given to him. Thi3 of itself almost ensures his election. With these favorable auspices, he is being aided most effectually by the organ of his opponents, which is doing more than the most bitter opponents of Lecomptonism, to break down its own party and make its cause, and every one connected with it, odious and infamous to the senses of all decent men, by its scurrillous, obscene, 'and imbecile 'ti rades. ... t m (7"Mr. Crisp, at. the Library, has specimens of eight or ten of our native birds preserved with their beautiful plumage in all its brilliancy, and in most life-like animated positions, by a lady, living near the Rodiam coal mines, who has the art of embalming. They make a beautiful ornithological ornament for a room, and especially for a library or cab inet. In interest a collection of these embalmed beauties of the forest, is equal to tho possession of a living aviary, without its attending inconvenience and care. It is superior to a painting of the sanu interesting objects, and does not cost a third as much. The artist is an industrious, worthy woman, whose husband gathers the specimens from our -own forests, which ' she almost .immortalizes by her art. ' - t5"A correspondent of tho Boston Courier says that the people of France are becoming more disgusted than ever, with the Imperial army fastened upon them by the Emperor, and lose no opportunity to express it. A journalist, M. de Pene, by nntue, was re cently dangerously wounded by a lieutenant in the army tinder most outrageous oircunistance.s. The correspondent adds: "The day after it occurrence, forty or fifty young men, students of the schools, went to the bureaus or the l igaro -to ask after the health of M.de Pene, and dasired that "their names might - bo inscribed upon a list as ready to accept an enoounter witu any souslieutenants who might choose to present themselves." Thi got wind amongst the Paris youth, and yesterday fivo thousand names were inscribed upon the list! Seeing what a turn affair wer taUn?, the editor of tha "Figaro," il. de Yillemesoant, went to Tuileries at once and asked for au audience of the Emperor, in order to tell him hor very menacing the bnaluess waa likely to beoome. LTessas not received, but was renested to confer with M. Mocquard, and was also authorized by the Emperor to go at once to the Minister of Jatice. and see what oould be done to stop the evil erteets of the duel." A Hab Wat to Make JJunrt. Mr. Mickey Free, ot Newburgh celebrity, we hear has made match in Pourhkeepsie, on the 7th of June next, at the hotel of Calvin h. Marshall, to wait 112 successive hours without rest or bleep, for $500. The feat will be performed upon a plank SO feot long, aud So inches wide, and 30 inches from the floor. To win the bet, Mr. Free must remain on the plank. If he performs this wonderful feat be will have walked 12 hours longer than any man who ever attempted a aimilar feat. The champion belt which the Newburghers intended to present to Mr. Freewill be given neat Friday. Apollo Theatre. Wo are happy to announce the ritorn of our old friend Eella Adams, with a select Dramatic Companjr. She will gi?e a performance to-morrow evening, consisting of " The Stranger," and A Cure for Jealousy." Of course everybody will attend and give her a glorious reception. -- 0"France3 Maghee a colored girl waa convicted of an aggravated case of infanticide in the Circuit court at Vincennes, on Tuesday, and sentenced to 1 the penitentiary for life.
