For thirty ;years it has stood in its glass case, admired by thousands of strangers and artists for its "uniqueness, beauty of proportions and superior workmanship. - Often have we heard it spoken or; 'twas but yesterday we came across its 'history. Thirty years ago, a poor carpenter lof Baltimore, named llussell, conceived the idea of constructing a model of the National ''Capitol. Every Saturday afternoon he walked to Washington for the purpose of taking 'drawings, and procuring the exact proportions 'of the buildings, returning to his labor on Monday. Nights through the week were devoted to the construction of liiä ideal model and through many months he toiled, walking to Washington and back each week. At last it was finished; a specimen of mechanical skill, rare, beautiful and praiseworthy. For a moderate promissory compensation, he agreed to place it in the Museum. Circumstances beyond his control prevented his ever receiving a cent from the Museum, and in thj lapse of years his model was sold with the establishment. Thus the ideal of his toilsome days and nights, passed forever from him. For years and years afterward, the poor carpenter came daily to look upon the beautiful outgrowth of his genius. Time still passed on and tlio one idea of his life had mude Iii m a maniac. What became of him none knew fjw cared. The only monument he deft was the beautiful model, the work of hii own hands, and the cause of hi,saJ insanity, if you ever go to the Baltimore Museum don't forget to enquire itr the Modul of the Capitol. A ScEJfC Ne.b Uomk. It was supposed tsimt, with the introduction of railroads, the trade .of brigandism on the hih road wouli be at an end. It appears not to be the case, " however, in the Papal States. From the .official paper of Home, of the 13th November last, we learn that the railroad train between JTrascati and Uon.e was stopped by a party of sVindfl, who, at night, imitating the signal for the stoppage of the train, brought it to a halt. They immediately secured the engineer and firemen, and then after detaching the locomotive from the cars, proceeded with perfect impunity to rifle the pockets and baggage of the passengers. A brigand was stationed at either end of the cars with loaded muskets, while Aheir fellows armed to the teeth, forced the jpassengers to deliver up their valuables. As the people of the Roman States arc not allowed to carry arms, they are at the mercy of the brigands, who go armed to the teeth, and who with a knowledge of this fact, do not hesi tate to assail people in their houses. Return ok Captain II ahtstkix. The ILondon Times announces that Captain Hart stein anTl officers and crew, will return to the United States in her Majesty's steamer Retribution, now at her station at Portsmouth. "The vessel was to leave England the day after Christmas, and she may be expected at this port within ten days. Capt Hartstein dined with tho Queen at Osborn, where she engaged 'him in familiar conversation for nearly an hour. Lady Franklin entertained the officers at her house at Brighton, with great hospitality, and their return to this country was delayed on this account solely. A recent letter from Mr. Barrow, of the Admiralty, to a friend in this -city, states that another expedition in search of Sir John Franklin is determined on.probably under tho direction of Dr. King. Aid for Kansas. A clergyman, formerly i a resident of Erie county, N. V. writing from , Bloomington Kansas, to a friend in Buffalo, says: 'There is no hope of relief from the ras- ' cally, rapacious corniants, called the Kansas ' Central Committee, who have the management of the funds sent here for the aid of the destitute. A more arrant speculation, a mart (lishonest game, could not be played. Many here are conscious of it, but they have said '"io not ''expose tfiemtill after ths election." If tho North i-kcw the rascallity in the management of the ' committe here, they would send their donations direct to those they wish to relieve, or ' tend none. God knows the sufferings here ' have'not been exaggerated. A larjre aniountofi funds has been sent, and too much of them used for different purposes than those contem plated by tho donors. I wish the above par- ' arraph was in print in Buffalo." Commenting upon the above, the Rochester Union remarks: Ve would by no means virtually perpetu- ' ate the presidental canvass, nor gratuitously recall any unpleasant recollection, nor yet indulge in wanton reproach of those whose sjnse of duty and political actions differ from ''our own. That the great miss of those who supported Fremont are just as honest, just as 'patriotic, and just as intelligent as any portion of our citizens, we do not question, nor never expressed a smrie tlouot. ;sor is it any impu tation upon the honesty or patriotism ofthat ' class to point to tho fact that they have been crossly imposed upon in reference to this "Kansas-aid" business; that there is no proof known to tho public of the application of one 'dollar of the vast fund collected in various parts of the country to tho purpose that the contributors intended it. "It is du3 to tho cause of good morals, and rto persons who gave money to"aid free-Ivan-sis," that tho depositories should be called to aicoun. If the money tea applied according to the implied pledges of those who acted as agents of "free -Kansas," then there can be no difficulty in establishing tne lact to the satis - Caption of the public. But if it was not so an ralied. as we believe it was not. then the ex
posure of the fraud would consign its rrre.,nV""oel0'e"m:,i,by GE0. foster & co
tralortoa deserved infamy, and prevent the repetition of a simular fraud in future. By al! means, let us have an authentic account as to how this Kansas fund was disposed of." Why Nankeex Went out ok Fashion.
In the days of our grandfathers there was nothing so fashinable for summer wear as nan keen. .No gentleman would be seen abroad or at home in a dress of which this material did not go to the making of a portion; and as we ever fixed the fashion on questions of male costume, tae mode was adopted in Franco, and English nankeens threatened to drive all French manufactured articles forsuiumsr we ir out of the market. Louis XIV' however surmounted the difficulty; he ordered all the executioners and their assistants to perform their terrible office in no other dress but one of nankeen. This rendered the material ' in famous;" and many a man, who deserved to be hanged, discarded the suit because a similar one was worn by the man who did the hanging. So Mrs. Turner, the poisoner, being executed, in the reign of James I, in a yellow starched ruff", put to death the fashion of wearing them." NE ORLEANS. J. E.
