A Akkassas "Noatis." In a recent tour through one of the wildest and most sparsely settled regions of rkanaas (the land made classic by the effusions of that versatile geni tjs "Pete "Whetstone,") I arrived at the lerry on the Cache River. A little log house grocery stood on the near bank, about fifteen tftf)s from where the ferry flat lay, tied to a snag in the edge of the water. Several bear km ?,Jeer skin, and coon skins were nailed up to dry against the walls of the grocery, but the door was closed, and no bar keeper, ferry man or other person was in sight. I hartooed at the top of my voice au.ne half a dozen times, but no one answered. Seeing an advertisement on the door I read as follows. "No, sir-re?.' Schoolsaaster Jones writ that. John haint got no larnui." And the good woman rowed the boat safely across the ugly si ream; ad handing her the ferriage-fee, ( bade her good morntug, believing then, as atill do.tkat she was one of the happiest women, and best wives, I ever saw-pertectly contented with her lot, because ahe knew no better. New York Spirit of the Time. OCT" The latest case of absence of mind is related of the foreman of a grand jury in Missouri. A fter administeriag the oath to a beautiful woman, instead of handing the Bible, he preaented his face, and said, "Now kisa the book, madam!"
