An Agreeable Surprise.
An interesting and enjoyable incident occurred last night. After the close of the meeting of Fort Harrison Lodge, No. 157,1. O. O. F., and when the members went into the ante-room, on their way out of tbe lodge, they found-that a good and warm sapper had been set by the Daughters of Rebekah, (a branch of the order). All the Odd Fellows were surprised, as they had bo idea that any Btch entertainment w&s in preparation far them. It is unnecessary to state that the supper was quickly eaten, and that entire justice waa done to it.
Jlr. John Aptnaan will be married tomorrow (Thursday) evening to Miss Emma Lco*e. The ceremony will take place at Mr. Apmann's residence,. 437 Qalick street, at 8:30 o'clock, and the reception will be at Turner Hall, commencing about ten o'clock. The Bingrold band will furnish music, and there will be dancing and a pleasant time generally. [Gazette copy one time.]
If you can't "Beat" a ocugh, "Bull" it with pr, Ball's Ooagh Syrap,
THE I! EMBER FOB BLOCU1L Vyv) The nttecdecce at this performance last io:ght was not as Isrge as usually seen «»ben Mr. and Mrs. Goodwin are "before the footlights. The "Member for Slocum," is a bright little comedy which, if the curtain had risen on time, as it did not, 8nd there had not been Uiree very long waitp, would have been given in an hour and a half. The gtSid'looking M. P. is a Very yotiBg man with a wife and mothteric-law who is a very dragon. She writes his speeches for him and bailies him and detects his friend Smith. Now thia 8miih hss a pretty wjfe, between whom and himself there is a temporary estrangement.
Mrs. Arethusa Smithfpursues the Hon. Onesimus Epps and in his frantic efforts to escape from her as ^rell as to conceal her from his vigilant mother-in-law we have the principal excitement of the play.
As for tbe production itself it ia one of those slight, light and brighis farces that used to be run in at tbe end of heavier plays to found out the evening's entertainment still as it is, It is an excellent vehicle for tbe exhibition of Nat. Goodwin's superlative powers as a come* diaii, though its does not equal Hobbies in dash and rapid fun, or display to equal advantage the whole company. Toe audience showed an intense enjoy ment in every word, each expressive play of features, comic gesture and striking attitudes that filled Goodwin's part from beginning to end with never humor aod drollery.
That it was the more quiet fun of comedy wilh lees of the exaggeration of burlesque would recommend this character to many. Mrs. Eliza Weathersby Goodwin in the animated and mischievous part of Mrs. Smith, was in her element and played as always, as if merely di-playiog her natural exuberance of spirits.
That very extraotdinary performance for 8n M. P., tbe song and dance with Aretboss, delighted the house With the "gre«t Goodwin dancing," of which there is no equal. The amount of expression that Mr. G. cen throw into a crushed hat, or the flirt of a coat-tail is remarkable. Miss Keifferih as Mrs. Jeffs was a spirited aod authentic mother-in law and Mr. Herbert made up and played Gunning the gardener^ with its somewhat limited opportunities excellently. The remaining support filled up the bill very well, &nd the curtain went down with a final round of applause.
Tbe music by the orchestra, under the leadership of J. Eller, attracted attention and approbation. There was an addition to the instruments, which might have been a Turkish drum, the leader's tioct or some artist thumping on the stage, but it was monotonously and regular persistently disagreeable.
LEAVITT'8 minbtrels.
This popular company will appear at the Opera House to»-morrow night in an excellent programme. Tbe Cincinnati Euquirer says of them: "Manager Leavitt, who is here this week in person, may well feel satisfied with the reception accorded bis really excellent troupe of minstrels at Bobinson's last night, every act on the bill meeting with favor from the very large and fashionable audience present, which we are satisfied will be largely increased in numbers as (he merits of the company become known. The first part presented tbirty-four performers and when we say "performers" we mean artists 311 of them, no chairwarmers being used to fill up the stage, which has often been the case of late with large shows. This portion of the show was excellent, the fine singing of the quartette being heartily encored and the end men kept things lively with their funny sayings and doiDgs, and to their credit bs it said, they were mostly new. The olio is a fine one, not a poor or tedious act in the same, and some of them above the average by several degrees. The burlesque closing the bill sent all home in high hood humor, ready to give a good word for Leavitt's Minstrels. Tbe company remains during the week, with matinees Wednesday and Saturday.
HYDE fc BEHMAN.
A strong variety combination, Including such artists as Kelly and Ryan, Morris and Fields, the Oiympia Quartette, Keegan and Wilson, ar.d the Bordeaux Sisters, will give an entertainment at the Opera House Friday evening. The performance concludes with the laughable sketch,."Muldoon'a Blunders."
NEIL BURGESS
Will appear at the Opera Houee Saturday night in bis well-known rendition of the "Widow Bedott," of which an exchange saje: "Tbe farcial comedy, 'Widow Bedott,' with the really remarkable character comedian, Neil Burgess, in the title role, was presented in Toledo, last evening. As this ia tbe third engagement played in thia city within a year, and as the weather was of the vilest kind, we were not prepared for the really good house present. Three engagements in so short a time is rather frequent for this city, and so the audience last night was a compliment indeed. Mr. Burgets has improved wonderfully since his last visit to this city, and plays the very difficult character with finish and nicety, as well as breadth, and stamps him as a true artist, and not a mere fun-maker. Mr. Burgess studies carefully and acts conscientiously. His performance is quite as finished as Den Thompson's Joshua Whitcomb, and more meritorious because more difficult."
The Schools.
The public schools opened yesterday morning. Tbe attendance wa3 not as large as nsual, owing to the vaccination law. Large numbers of children were sent home from the different wards for failing to comply with the proper requirements. The doctors' offioes were well patronized daring the day by children, either being vaccinated or to procure a certificate, which had been neglected by numbers who had been vaccinated.
The Normal School opened, also, yesterday morning with a good attendance. Daring tbe holidays members of the faculty have been attending institutes, etc, in different parts of the State. Prof. Eli F. Brown, Prof. Newby, Miss Morris and President Brown attended the State Teachers' Association, at Indianapolis, the latter also visiting Frankfort and Bushville. Prof. Carhart attended an institute at Crown Point, and Prof. M. Seiler at Vincennes.
