The "gentleman," who is, no doubt, mark ed with an' interrogation point somewhere, was substantially told to mind his own business—and he left, we suppose, to mind it. Wow this is a very exnsperat ing anecdote, but tbe worst of it is that we are not favored with tbe "gentle man's" name. We may not love him but we should like to know who (or what) his father was. So far, we also confess to curiosity.
A WRiTKR in the
Tribune,
who we think
can be none other than the venereble "Philosopher" himself, remarks that whatever else may be said of Mr.
POLLARD'
late book, it can never be denied that was written by a perfect gentleman. The author's description of Mrs, JEFFERSON DAVIS sufficiently attests his claim to be regarded as a chevalier without shame and witheut reproach. Mrs. DAVIS,according to Mr. POLLARD, "is a brawny, able-bodied woman, who has much more of mascu line mettle than of feminine grace. Her complexion is tawny, even to the point of mulattoism a woman loud and coarse in her manners, and full of social self-asser tion." The South for half a century has been charging the North with a lack of good-breeding and we venture to say that in all the North nobody could have been found to write and then print a descrip tion of a lady's person so complimentary as this. There are, it must be confessed certain graces of character in which we are still deficient.
AGENTS who have canvassed the bouth for the purpose of contracting for tbe ser vices of Chinese laborers, says a New York journal, have been to a marked degree successful. It is reported that one planter in South Carolina has contracted iorthe delivery of two hundred and fifty and that others in his vicinity have swelled the requisition to nearly a thousand, Ibe first shipload being expected by January Advices from Oregon state that about a thousand Chinamen are working on the East Side railroad. On the other hand many persons at the South writing [Northern journals, think that tbe intro duction ef Chinese labor in sucfe propor tions as to compete with that of the negro would have a ruinous effect would create a terrible contest between the African and Asiatics, and end in making a howling wilderness of tbe Southern States. These writers contend that the negro now works well, and that what is needed is intelligent Europeon labor, and above all Northern capital, to so organize the present col ored labor as to bring its latent forces in to more active and profitable use-
jglory of Washington will not depart from it for a generation or two and« when it becomes absolutely necessary for tbe seat of government to be transferred from tbe .banks of the Potoriiac, it will be to some point west of tbe Mississippi."

TiHKi&aiB is still in a political ferment the end of the warm contest between SENTEB and STOKES has not brought peace to that perturbed State Mr. EMERSON ETHXRIDQK keeps the po litical embers in a glow by long and fre quent speeches. He says bitter things of that other incorrigible political free-lance, ex-President ANDREW JOHNSON. Repudiation is Mr. ETHKBIDGE'sspecial hobby he does not advocate it as a measure t0 ba immediately carried out, but insists that it will be universally advocated in the Bbort space of two years. Prophecies on the stump are effective, but they are seldom if ever fulfilled. Mi ETHERIDQEI if he lives until 1871, will feign forgetfulness of bis present prognostics. In the early days of the late rebellion, a Southern statesman, of ripe experience in pub lie affairs, emphatically promised to drink every drop of blood that would be shed for the preservation of the Union. Of course he never reverted to that declaration after the little affair at Bull Run yet he was as wise in his day and genera tion as is now the Hon. EMERSON Ethk RIDQE.
THE Philadelphia Inquirer says: "The advocates of the removal of the Nationtlf Capital from Washington to some point in the Mississippi Valley, have had bomb of a most destructive character thrown in the midst of tbeir camp the shape of a communication from Commissioner SARGENT. "That gentleman makes a strong point hitherto strangely overlooked, viz: that tbe seat of government cannot be removed from its present site save by an amendment to the Constitution. The
Inquirer
asserts
that "this view of the case is sustained by all lawyers who have read Mr. SARGENT'S important and learned statement," and concludes that "It will prove a death blow to tbe hopea of those who expected to remove the public offices westward forthwith. Many years will elapse before the fiastern and Middle States consent to have the seat of government moved toward the boundless West. The
The Methodist lay Vol®.
mm
Although a larg« majority of the Methodists have voted in favor of lay representation, the question has come up, is the majority sufficient to instruct tbe General Conference? The vote itself is of no binding force, it haviDg been i&vi ted to ascertain tbe wishes of the denomination. It is held that the vote being comparatively meager, perhaps not half the members having voted, the majority though considerable, is not, after all, necessary a true expression of the popular will- The
Methodist
c6mbats this view
with several cogent arguments, conclud ing as follows: "Having invited the people to vote, and tbe vote having been given,we can not with tbe facts here cited before us,set aside the result as insufficient. Regarded as a form of petition, the vote is overwhelming tested by tbe principles applicableto a strictly legal election, it accords with tbe one which governs our own practice —the competency of the majority of those present and voting to decide all questions."
No Short dresses in England—Bad Lack of British Ladies. Frcm tbe Revolution. 1
Among tbe ladies whom one meets in walking in London, you are struck with the lack of taste in dress. They wear little or no hoops or crinoline, and instead of the pretty and convenient short street costumes which Parisian and American ladies have adopted, they stilt drag about or hold up, in an awkward attempt at better things, the long, trailing skirt which other nations discarded long ago They say that short dresses will never be worn during the reign of Victoria, whose feet, as well as her royal daughters', are plebeian in their large size and clumsy shape and therefore, as the ladies of Queen Elizabeth's time bad to wear ruffs because she needed to cover a deformity in her neck, so the women of the present age in England must keep on long dross, ea because Victoria has to hide her feet.
Two Hen Strangled to Death in a Weil. The Nashville

Treatment or Choy-Chew on a Pacific Mail Steamer. 1 A San Francisco correspondent relates an incident which occured on a recent passage of tbe Pacific Mail steamship Colorado, which indicates that the Chinese are not always safe from "prejudice against color," and that, no matter what may be their social position, or intellectual acquirements, they are not better than "niggners" in the eyes of some people. A young, and wealthy Chinese merchant, who bad been engaged in husiness in California, went back to China to take a wife of the daughters of bis people, and with his blushing bride, attended by two maid servants, had taken passage on thoBteamship above named. The dainty lady, who was quite a beauty aftsr the style of her country, never ventured to show her little feet outside of her stateroom but ber husband, speaking English perfectly, and thoroughly versed in our American customs, took bis seat at the dinoer table among the other passengers, But for the flowing silks of his natinonal costume, he would hardly have been de tected as a foreigner, yet tbe coarse and old sea captain took offence at his presence and insulted him to such extent that the "gentle Chinaman," to avoid lutther trouble, took his meals in bis own room
This man so grossly outraged by tbe old sea dog was none other tban ChoyChew, tbe wealthy and accomplished merchant who recently accompanied the com mercial party frdm San Francisoo to Chicago, ior the purpose of visiting our island emporiums and eastern seaports, to ascertain what openings they offer for the industry and enterprise of bis courtry men. It was this same gentlemen who made the admirable speech at Chicago before tbe Board of Trade, and was so warmly received by the members of the Ways and Means Committee of Congress and introduced to the leading merchants of the Western metropolis—feasting at tables at which the rough old sea captain would scarcely be permitted to sit
Is Marriage in Danger?
From the New York World Tbe growing laxity of tbe marriage tie and tbe ease with wbich divorces are now obtained in nearly every State in tbo Union bave called out, on tbe one side such men as President Woolsey to de claim againBt the dangers wbich threaten this social relation, and, on tbe other side there is now a regular school of writers and religionists who boldly announce their opposition to the marriage institu tion. The small beginning of Nichols, who wrote a novel advocating free-love, has at last culminated in an established literature devoted to tbatend. As'might be expected, Chicago is the seat of this new school of writers, and Chicago publishes and supports a large weekly journal avowedly devoted to the abolition of marriage and the substitution of the largest license. The contributors to this journal are generally women, somo of whom sign only their initials to their contributions, while others boldly annex tbeir names, maiden or marital, to the ideas thoy advance or advocate. The West is also producing a series of novels written by Eucb women as Mrs. J. S. Adams and Mrs. Caroline'Fairchild Corbin, covering with tbe tbin disguise of a story a pro nounced advocacy of the free-love doctrine. One of the writers in anti-marri-age organ to which we refer, says in a recent issue: "Thereis scarcely anything left now but the name of marriage, so loose is the system of divorce becoming, when parties are left as free to unmarry as to marry, and that point is almost reached. The old idea of marriage is dead past hope of resurrection and this writer rejoices that it is so, becaute marriage "iB contrary to the whole spirit ef the age."
The supporters of the new organ and the new school of anti-marriage literature may be counted by the thousands at the West, and at the East even Mrs, Stanton has written a pamphlet which more than insinuates that tbe existing laws relating to marriage are necessarily bad because they are wholly framei by men. Tbe laws relating to divorce are every year and everywhere becoming more lax.
The other day conservative South Carolina granted, at Chariastoa, the first divorce ever permitted in tut" State. The women's rights business is really an approach toward individualism and individual action in all things, in regard to the mrriage relation with tbe rest. The positive advance the new and dangerous doctrine-is making and the hold it is taking upon large masses of people is a matter of grave import to the future of this country, and subject eomtnends itself to tbe philosophers and preachers who are interrstedin our social progress.

Mr. Newland, of that place, -hired the two colored men, Mark Sneed and Phil. Hughes to dig deeper in his well, it having gone dry. They having gone down about forty feet, and drilled out a deep hole for another blast, loaded it,and made all preparations to lire it off. Tbe blast failed to explode, when Phil. Hughes went down in tbe well to rearrange tbe fuse. He soon commenced coughing and gave signs of strangling, when he was immediately pulled up, and when nearly to the top, be fainted and fell lifeless to the bottom. He too showed signs of suffocation, and was being fast drawn up, when at the same point the first one got to, he fell out of the tub, and died in about thirty minutes. The other lived about sixty minutes. They could be heard at tbe bottom of the well groaning, ^ftor several attempts they were hookod out,and will be buried to-day. Both of the men were hard working, polite, and stood well in the neighborhood.
