erally known.
MATOB'S COURT.—Michael Jones, a lively believer in the opinion that ho has aright to do as he pleases, was arrafgdd^' yesterday for attempting to break in the door of a house on llh street, for which conduct he was assessed .fifteen dollars.— Bather than hand over his greenbacks in such a plural manner, he went to ^ail.
A couple of belligerent gentlemen paid the penalty for punching each others mugs, and bogged the authorities to keep their names veiled from nB-
OPERA HOUSE.—There has been for some days past, quite a determined effort upon -the part of some of our enterpris ing citizens to secure the "burnt district'' on the corner of Main and Fourth streets, for the erection of an opera bouse, of imposing Appearance And mpdera^de* dgnT We had hopes tbdt the enterprise would have been a success, and the building commenced early this Spring,y but we regret to learn that, at a .meeting of the gentlemen who have been prominent in this movement, .held last evening, the en terprise has been formally abandoned 1n •consequence of the exorbitant prices asked and demanded fqr. the grounds by some of its proprietors. We are gratified to believe, however, that there are some •other locations Squitfly desirable, in our opinion, for such an improvement.
ADVERTISING.—The benefits to be de rived from liberal advertising, siys tbe Washington Times, are incalculable.— The enorcy and ^enterprise of- a blidineai tnan mayve measured by his advertising. If he be timid, puerile, or hesitating, he will not advertise but on tbe cop^rar^ if he be a man of nerved purpose, and manly faculties generally, he avails himself of every legitimate means to advertise his business. Ho is not afraid lo. invest is tbe columns of a newspaper aware that the investment so made is sure to pay liborally. Such men invarinbly juot only succeed, but make their mark in life.
Name the suoceisfdl and the opulent of the land, and you repeat the names of those who have advertised freely. The man who has not the courage to advertise is incapable of being successful 'in business.

THE FEIKNX6 and apologists-for bonds, paniers, and "sich," charge that tight pantaloons are equally absurd. That is a mistake. There is nothing ludicrous in masculine—or, for that matter, feminine —legs. The absurdity is in their tenuity If a man is as manly and healthy lis he ought to be, his lower limbs are as attractive handiwork of nature as his face. If he is puny and sparrow shank ed, tight trousers are, for him, folly.— Here is one of the evils of «n. uniform fashion, having no regard for ihdividtials. V"
