Exclusively for the Journal. FROM NEW YORK. A MUTINY OAT ST A TEN ISLAKDTI1E T.MVTE SUPPRESSED ASD THE LEAD EM IN IhOXS. New Yoke, May 15. Last Wednesday noon, the Burnside Rifles encamped at Sprague, Staten Island, were making preparations to leave in a body when Col Levy, in command of the Post called out a strong guard to defend the entrance through which the mutineers were determined to pass. They came on armed with clubs, stones, spades and pickaxes, and when Col. Levy, pistol in hand, commanded them to return to duty, he was met with a yell of deGanee and hit by a stone, hurled by one of the party. He throttled his assailant, and the mutineers endeavored to escape in another direction when a fight ensued in which one man was killed and others wonnded. Twenty of the number escaped, but were afterwards captured aud ta.ken in irons to Governor's Island. FROM -WASHINGTON. All officers or enlisted men absent by virtue of being on parole will now, that they are exchanged, report immediately for duty with their proper commanders. Senators Wade and Chandler went down the river, on a visit to the Army of the Potomac, to-day. New York, May lo. At the presentation of the complimentary resolutions of the Washington City Council to General McCIellan, yesterday, he declared that the rumor of his resignation was untrue. Special to the Times. Washington, May 14 The President, tQ-night, received from headquarters Army of the Potomac, an original letter of Jeff. Davis', addressed to one of his CoToiipIq. in wriieji La. cjjuaaUo docpond. ingly of aifairs in the southwest and on the Rappahannock. The letter was found in a rebel, camp at Fredericksburg, and dated may 20th; Lee's headquarters are in Fredericksburg. Gen. Barksdale, of Miss., is in command there. The rebels are remarkably well clothed this spring. A dispatch received at the State Department to-day frou Minister Corwin, shows that up to the 21st April, the French had not obtained possession of Puebla. A Missouri influence, headed by Senator Henderson, has procured the relief of Gen. Curtis from his command and the appointment of Geu. - Schofield iu his place. An independent active cavalry command will immediately be given to Col. Kilpatrick. Special to Herald. Washington, May 14. It will be recol lected that it was stated that previous to falling back Hooker held a council ot war of the corps comanders. With this statement in view the public will be surprised to learn that four of the six Generals urged upon Hooker an immediate advance upon the rebel army. A large party of Union Leaguers from Philadelphia arrived here to-day. Senators Wade and Chandler and Col. Forney are their invited guests, and it is supposed that steps are to be initiated whereby some forces are to be organized under Government auspices to repress disloyal demonstrations in the North. FROM GRANT'S ARM?. ADJT.GEX. THOMAS AT CAIRO TEN NEGRO REG I MET OKGAXI.ED REBELS DFSPAIRIXti OF VHKSIiLRG REBEL LOaSA T ISA YOI PIERRE. Cairo, MayJ14. Adjt Gen. Thomas arrived ot Memphis on the 12th. He organized ten regiments of negroes, and expected to organize ten more. Troops are on their way from Memphis to Young's Point, moving to reinforce Grant. Judge Kellogg, who left Grant's headquarters Thursday last, says the report of a fight at Clinton is untrue. Grant will endeavor to cut the railroad between Vicksburg and Vicksburg Junction, and a battle is expected in the vicinitv of Biack River Bridge. The Jackson Appeal says Bowen's loss at the battle of Bayou Pierre was about 1,000. The rebel killed and wounded were left, on the field. Gener al Tracy, Lieut. CoL Pettis and Major Tuckerman were killed. Col. Garnett and Major Hurley slightly wounded. The Vicksburg correspondent of the Appeal takes a gloomy view of matters. He says Grants movements have deceived both the people and the military. Gen. Bragg was at Atlanta on the 2il. A dispatch from Richmond, says rail road connection is re-estabhsbed between Richmond and Fredericksburg. Washington, May 15. Advices from Gen. Grant to the 8th inst, have been re ceived in Washington. Fort Monroe, May 15. Yesterdays Richmond papers have been received with dates from Charleston np to the 12th inst. ; One despatcli says the enemy is unusually active. He has built formidable batteries on I'Vlley Island, bearing upon the southern extremity of Morris ishmd. Several Yankee regiments are fortifying Seabrook Island. Five iron-clads and numerous transpsrts are at North Edisto. Several steamers have arrived from Nassau, having run the blockade, Several steamers that are due are missing. Gen. A despatch from Somerset, Ky., 13th says the enemy is in force across the Cumberland. Morgan with the commands of Wheeler and Forrest is at Monticello. All conversation between pickets has been stoped, and affairs begin to wear a stiring aspect. v A despatch to the Post states tha it is Halleck and Hookea' and it is positively said that Hooker's new movements was countermanded by Halleck. Prominent congressmen here have united in a vigorous protest against Halleck taking the field and though the President may veto the project, there are no immediate prospects of movement Many corps commanders and staff officers of the army of the Potomac, are preparing to leave and some are now in Washington. At that time it was eighteen miles from Grand Gulf, encamped near Big Black river. We have not yet possession of any part of the railroad between Vicksburg and Jackson. There' is probably no truth in the reported battle at Clinton. Grant is receiving heavy reinforcements. A new overland route for troops and trains has been made from Young's Point to the river below. It is only eight miles long, and greatly expedites forwarding men and supplies. Ten negro regiments have been formed. Gen. Thomas, who has arrived at Memphis, thinks ten more can be formed. CongressmanjWashburne left the extreme front on Friday. From him we learn that Grant's advance was then within fifteen miles of Edwards' Station, which is eighteen miles east of Vicksburg.
