THE A DISLOYAL PLOT DETECTED. The Regiment Disarmed and I'nder Arrest. Our readors have heard strange storiet about a mutiny in the Ki'kh Illinois regiment; of its being disarmed and orKCOTS and men placed under arrest, after first being deprived of their arms. The i Lieutenant Colonel, it is reported, de-1 serted and went over to the rebels, some ' time before the regiment was arrested, j We learn the following additional par- j ticuhirs of this deeply disgraceful affair , from an officer of an Illinois regiment at Holly Springs, Miss., dated January 3d. The interruption of the mails caused the late arrival of the letter. It says: "You will doubtless hear from other sources of the disgraceful and disloyal behavior of one of our Illinois regiments. We Illinois soldiers feel mortified and chagrined bfeyond expression, that any soldiers from the glorious Prairie State should turn traitors to the Union and its fiag in the face of the rebel enemy. But so it is; there is at least one black sheep in the flock. But the plot.wos discovered in time to nip it before it was carried into execution. "The 109th regiment was raised, if I mistake not, in Williamson and Johnson counties, and was believed to be full of Knights of the Golden Circle. It was notoriously pro-Slavery all except one company, made of Republicans and War Democrats. A vague suspicion pervaded the minds of many officers and soldiers of other regiments, that the 109th would not do to "tie to?' in an emergency; that it was not "sound corn;" still, for a time, there was nothing remarkably bad in tneir uenuvior. 1 lie most suspicious circumstance fraternity and poptilarily of the officers and men with the Secesh natives women as well as men. It did not escape observation and remark that the officers spent much of their time in swearing at the Abolitionists, catching and returning contrabands of rebels that came within our lines, and talking about "the constitutional rights of our Southern brethren, that were being violated by the Lincoln Government." Whenever men talk in that way, it is a sure, unfailing sign that they are half rebels themselves, and care but little for the preservation of the Union. Things went along in this way until it was discovered that one or more of the officers and a number of the men had deserted to the rebels, taking their arms along with them. General Grant was desirous of knowing to what extent the regiment was rotten, and he was shortly furnished with the desired information. A few days ago a Lieutenaut of the famous Kansas Cavalry, who is about as " sharp as they make 'em," dressed up in the garb of a rebel officer, and went into the country at night some eight or ten miles from Holly Springs, and "played oft" on the "butternut" natives that he was a captain in the rebel army out on a scout, and for other purposes. He quickly gained the confidence oi the rebel family though the old man of the house was reticent at first, he was soon convinced that the Captain was " all right on the goose," and swore by Jeff. Oavis, when the oid fellow unburdened his soul and made the following revelations: The 109th was then stationed at Waterford, eight miles south of Holly Springs. The officers and men had told the natives that they were tired of the war, and did not want to see the South whipped, but wished the Seceded States to get their independence; that they desired to be taken prisoners, and would surrender at the first opportunity; that they entered the army because they thought they could best serve their Secesh friends by joining the army, and, when the time came, desort and take their arms with them. They assured the natives that they were all true Southern men except Co. K, which was made up of " Black Republicans" and " abolition Democrats." The regiment, with the exception of said company, had concerted measures with the Secesh citizens of Pontotoc county to attack them some morning, so as to give them an opportunity to surrender with all their arms and munitions. The old I fellow said that a band of sixty of the 1 neighbors had already organized for the purpose, and the " attack " will speedily he made, and the post surrendered. It was expected that Company K would show fight, but it was arranged to rush upon them suddenly, and before they . would have time to fall into line. The Lieutenant could hardly credit the i story told him by the old Secesh and his wife and daughters. It seemed to the I officer hardly credible that this could all

be true: but on making tests to verify it, he received the same information mt m five different families, residing in different neighborhoods, within a circle of half day's ride. One of the planters told some of our men recently that a Captain of the 109th Illinois had offered $200 to any man who could bring him two companies of guerrillas to attack them, as they all wanted to surrender except Co. K, which contained srity d d Abolitionists, hut they could easily be overpowered and taken prisoners. This aud other information was laid before Gen. Grant. The result was the issuing of the following order: " Heapqi-arteiss 13th Army Corps,") "Dept. of the Ienxessef., "Holly Springs, Miss., "Dec. 31, 1862. " Special Order No. 52. "It having been alleged that the 109th regiment Illinois infantry volunteers has shown indications of disloyalty, and many members of the regiment having voluntarily hunted up citizens, in the neighborhood of their camp to surrender and obtain parole from, is hereby placed in arrest "The regiment will be disarmed by the commander of the brigade to which the regiment is temporarily attached, and the arms and ammunition of the regiment turned over to the ordnance officer, Lieut. Carter, to be disposed of as may hereafter be ordered. "Officers and men will be confined within camp limits until otherwise ordered. "The conduct of Co. K, of said regiment, being in honorable contrast to the remainder of the regiment, is exempt from the effect of the above order, and will be placed on duty with the brigade to which said regiment is attached. " By command of Major-General U. S. Grant. "John A. Rawlixgs, A. A G." The regiment is now placed where it can do no harm, and its arms are saved from f alling into the hands of the enemy. I recollect of hearing reports that when this regiment left Jonesboro' to join the army, that many of the men cheered for Jeff. Davis and the Southern Confederacy as the cars moved off. The feeling of disgust and contempt among the loyal regiments is intense; and if the soldiers were allowed to hold a courtmartial on these recreants, if found guilty of these charges, they would order out every tenth man to be shot, and send the others to the penitentiary during the continuance of the war. General Orders No 10, issued by the War Department, announcing a further exchange of prisoners of war, are published for the information of all concerned: WAR DEPARTMENT, Aji'taxt Gexeral's Office, Washington, Jan. 0tk, 1863. The following officers and men have been declared duly exchanged as prisoners of war, siuce the announcement in "General Orders," No. 191, of November 19, 1802: L All the officers and enlisted men who were delivered at City Point, Va., from the 1 1 th of November, 1862, to the 1st of January, 1SG3. 2. All officers and enlisted men captured at Harper's Ferry. 3. All officers and enlisted men paroled at Winchester, November, 15th, and 20th, 1802, and Dec. 1, 1862. 4. All officers and men paroled by Colonel Imboden, November 9, 1862. 5. All officers and enlisted men paroled at Goldsborough, N. C. May 22, 1862, and delivered at Washington, North Carolina. 6. All captures of officers, enlisted men and camp followers, in Missouri, Kansas, Arkansas, New Mexico, Texas, Arizonia, and Louisiana, up to January 1, 1863. 7. All captures of officers, enlisted men, and camp followers, in Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, South Carolina, and Florida, up to December 10, 1862. 8. All captures on the sea, the sea and gulf coasts, and the waters flowing iuto the same, up to Dee. 10, 1862. 11. The paroled troops herein declared to be exchanged, will be, without delay, equipped for the field and forwarded to the armies to which they bcljng. from posts or camps wherever they may be collected. All officers and enlisted men absent, in virtue of being on parole, will, now that they are exchanged, immediately return to duty with their proper commands. By order of the Secretary of War: E. D. All officers and soldiers of Indiana regiments or batteries, absent from camp, will report, forthwith, to the undersigned, at his office, so that they may be forwarded to their posts of duty.
