large and intelligent audience which at Dowling feiil groeted tlieir' first appearance this g^&son. 'The performance was gotten up by young gentlemen connected with the Grand Army and through that organization the prooooda are to be disbursed to needy widows and orphans of deceased soldiers. It was a most fortu^ nate.selection in taking for -vhe initial pieceTSTra. Anna Cora Mowatt's brilliant comedy of "Fashion, or, Life in New York," Vrhich is. intended as.a good natured satire upon some of the follies incident to anew country, where foreign dross too* often passes for gold, where the vanities rather than the virtues of other lands are too often imitated, and where the stamp of Fashion gives currency even to the coinj^je of vice. The following ladies and gentlemen appeared representing the characters named

Hager,. Edward, Aiken, L. F. Muzzy, P. B. O'Reilly and the young ladies kept tbe audience in an most uproarious laughter.

In regard to the performance, we have only to say that we'doubt much If it could have .been better rendered by any company of amateur* in the country, and the patience manifested by the immense audience, during tbe lengthy performance bears testimony to the fact. Amateurs appearing for a charitable purpose, and not for money or fame, shpuld not be subjected to criticism) and we suppose by a reversal ot' the rule W would hardly be instilled in lavishing upon them individually the high encomiums their performs ance justly merits. In view of the late hour at: which we' ^rite, the amateurs will excuse us from more particular men tion of this really excellent entertainment, and we but give the voice of all present laffr'Evening when we express the hope that many such entertainments will be given this winter. .,

THE DIFFERENCE.—Says' an exchange: A lady crossing the street expects a gentleman driving a untill she gets across. That is right. When a gentleman is crossing the street and a lady is driving a team, she againjexpects the gentleman to stop until she gets out of tbe way Th^t is not right. When three ladies are walking arm-in-arm on the side* walk and a gentleman meats tbem, they expect him to go into the gutter, so they can pass. May be that is right also, but we''-can't se® it."

is a certain classi of

men who advocate the adoptioa of & method of orthography which shall be founded on the sounds produced in uttering words a la

Now here are fifty-two variations, each preserving the usual pronunciation of tbe word, and it would be easy to supply other words in which the same thiue would occitr.

Although it is- the .duty of a local editor to be all over town and at a dozen differ* ent points at the same time in order to keep a faithful and true record of the affairs' and improvements constantly occurring, we must confess that our double duties in connection with the local and business departments causes the EXPRESS to be ignorant of many of the events and improvements daily going forward. Sel-, rlom has this fact been so forcibly impressed On us as when on yesterday we accidentally stepped into tbe Leather Estabishment of Messra. Burnett & Ross. Some weeks since tbey moved into tbe rooms formerly occupied by Messrs John Scofl & Son. No. 144 aud 146, i^ain street, and from that time tho carpenters, peinters and others have been at work until now there is presented truly a modei establishment. A gentleman connected with the leather interest, who has traveled extensively, states that he knows of but two establishments in tbo Union that surpass it. The proprietors, are loth to admit this much, and until we see the other establishments we agree with the /»ter.

This business building is thirty-fiw by one hundred and forty-two feet—three stories and cellar, and as before remarked, is arranged throughout with a view to the greatest convenience and adaptability.— On the first floor tbey have tbe most convenient, tasteful, aud so fur as using nil the room is concerned, the most economical arrangement for shelf Saddlery Hardware, that it sterns possible to make. Their leather and 'shoe-finding department, which is also on this floor, is fitted up in a complete manner—a "place",for everything and everything in its place." if

The Office is also on this floor, and is about two-thirds of the way back froui the front it is finished with ash aud black walnut and varnished, and is lighted by a skylight. It is large and roomy, bns a private office in one end, two large grates for giving warmth, and is furnished with very thing necessary to make it convenient and pleasant. In lact it is a perfect gem of a counting room, ana reflects credit on the taBte of whoevec superintended its arrangement and fitting up.

In the rear of the Office is a large storeroom for dry hides. This room extends to an alley, making it exceedingly convenient for the receiving and shipping of Hides, Sheep Skins "and all things of that kind it is also lighted by a skylight.

The second floor ia used for tbe heavier and more bulky of Saddlery Hardware Goods, and for duplicates df shoe-findings kept on the first floor. To show the extensiveness of the stock we will mention that on this floor is a room devoted'entirely to Whips.

On tho 3d floor is their currying and finishing shop, where tbey seem to have every facility for carrying on that brunch of their business. It is warmed -by a furnace from below, hich is so arrunged as to heat almost the entire house with singular economy.

In tho cellar, which .extends under the entire house, are vats for tannings purposes and a large boiler for generating steam. Here also they cure their hidetC store oils and tallow.

They are quite extensively engaged in buying furs, having their agents extending through this State and^Lllinois.

We lave extended this Ba*ty mention to greater length than wer. intended when we wrote the heading, and yet wa fail to do this model establishment justice. The wealth of Terre Haut?, ia manufactures and the wholesale trade ic too liLtle known even by our own people, and we hope as occasion may allow to speak of other establishments in other braucbes of trade.
