gold is still going up, and yesterday was at the highest point it has attained this summer Denuded of coat, vest and collar, aod exposed to tbe most injurious combination of drafts that the construction ef our rooms will permit, with the floor wet down every five minutes, one of Hater's miniature icebergs In the water bucket, from which copious draughts are freely taken, and a palmleaf fan grasped in the left band as one would clutch a life preserver when the snip is going down, we yet threaten to desolve into a pool of ex«sperated perspiration. It is all well enough to say "keep cool" but we would like to gee any one get cool. We can't keep what we hav'nt go and although we have searched diiligently tor coolness for several days past we hav'nt found it It is a commodity that isn't in the market. There is a premium on it higher than ou gold, and yet none is offered.

in a blaze of heat and comes up red hot iu the morning, to broil us over again. If there is a breeze it feels as though it bad come to us over a wide surface of heated grindstones. The hot pavements won't admit of a moderate pace and if you don't hurry out of the sun as quickly as possible, you expose yourself to a coup de so lie I, a coop we don't care to get into.
Thermometers which were in low spirits (particularly the spirit thermometcis) during the holidays when people are expected to feel "pretty well, I thank you," are having a high old time of it now. They get "elevated "every day, and don't let down any at night. We attribute the extreme heat to the thermometers, in a great measure. Since Congress has reduced (I) the price of gold so greatly, by the passage of the Gold Bill, we suggest thatjthey abolish thermometers to reduce the heat.
We rarely display undue warmth in writing on any subject, but with thethermome ter elevated Beveral thousand feet above the
level of the sea. as it at present is, a cool and salubrious Btyle of composition is out. of the question.
JtyThe growing scarcity of field hands and other laborers in the West, has induced some of the farmers of Ohio, Indiana and Illinois to send agents to New York with a view of obtaiping tbe requisite supply. Castle Garden, it is said, was visited by some of these persons, And a large number of newly arrived German snd Irish emigrants were engaged on tbe spot, on almost their own tormn. Thip dearth of labor is not peculiar to tho rural districts- In many of the manufactories and other establishments in Pittsburg and elsewhere there is the same complaint, and in not a few

We apprehend, however, that those new dabbling iu the present gold speculations will sooner or later come grief* The Chicago Tribune makes the following guggesttisns, which some very sharp men would do well to heed, or they wile likely to be laid out on the financial "cooling board." "Keep cool. Don't get excited. What goes up must como down. See tbat you stand from undor. WESTERN Eic^UEFCE.—Western eloquence continues to improve. Here is a specimen, the closing remarks of a Milwaukee lawyer in defense of a handsome young lady accused of stealing, from an unoccupied dwelling, in the night time:
Gentlemen of the jury, 1 am done. When I gate with enraptured eyes on the matchless beauty of this peerless virgin, on whose resplendant charms suspicion 'never dared to breathe—when 1 behold her radiant in this glorious bloom of Illustrious loveliness, which angelic angels might envy but not eclipse—before which the star on the brow of nigbt grows pale and the diamonds of Brazil are dim—and then reflect upon the utter maduoss and folly of supposing that so much beauty would expose it to the terrors of an empty building, in the cold damp of night, when in nocence like hers is hiding itself midst snowy pillows of repose. Gentlemen of the jury, my feelings are too overpowering for expression, and I throw her into your arms for protection agianst the foul charge, which the outraged malice of a disappointed scoundrels has invented to blast the fair name of this lovely maiden, whose smiles shall be tbe reward of the verdict which I know you will give.

WOODMAN-
THE FOURTH.—Notwithstanding the late hour at which the preliminary steps were take*], the celebration of the anniversary of American Independence in Terre Haute was indeed creditable.
The morning was ushered in with a Na tional Salute of thirty-four guns from Holmes' Battery .accompanied by the ringing of several church and fire bells.
The short notiee that had been given rendered it inconvenient for the Fire Companies and Benevolent osganizations to tarn oat, and consequently these very important features of a pnblic procession were missed.— The intolerable dust which lay inches deep on tbe streets, rendered it next to impossible for cit'zens in carriages, let alone on foot, to live in tbe clouds of dust that would necessa rily rise from a long cavalcade. But the programme had been laid down, and Col. Edwards, Chief Marshall of the Day was not the man to shrink from the performance of his duty. The prjee-sion was formed near the Terre Haute House, t!e Terre Haute Brass Band taking the lead, follt wed by the Officers of the Day aud Committee of Ar rauuements, in carriagees on each side of which rode tbe "Pony Brigade" composed of youths of the city, mounted on miniature horses. Then followed a line of carriages, while on every street leading to tbe grounds were as mauv if not more carriages, wagons, horsemen, &c., each party taking their own route to avoid the dust. On arriving at the ground, (Early's Grove) we found a very large crowd .larger we think than the assemblages on similar occasions the two previous years
The exercises at the stand opened with an address to the Throne of Grace by Rev. Thos. M. Martin, followed by thereadingof the Declaration of lndepenence by Capt. Muzzy, after which Col. R. W. Thompson delivered the Oration. Of it we shall not attempt to give even a synopsis, suffice it
to say that it was ooe of Col. T's. most masterly efforts, and when that is said, those who did not have the pleasure of hearing the words as they fell from the speakers lips, can safely pronounce it good.
After thp Oration an hour was given for diouer, and as this was on the pic-nic style, the crowd divided out in squads, and spreading the white cioths on the green grass proceeded to discuss the contents of many wellfilled baskets.
Dinner over the trumpet called the people to the Mind apsis, when tiie following toasts were offered mi.l rs°ponded t.» by the gentlemen named:
1. The day we celebrate—Mayits annual return ever bring joy and gladnes* to the he&its of all liberty loving American citizens, and sickening remorse to the hearts of traitors. 2. Uncle Sam—May he re-establish peace in his dominion, BecHre to Liberty a permanent home, and visit condign punishment upon his UBgrateful progeny who seek to divide his estate before his death.
Responded to by W. K. Edwards, Esq. 3. George Washington—The first of Presidents. 4. Our Army and Navy—The unterrified guardians of the flag and honor of the na* tion.
Responded to by Col. R. W. Thompson. 5. The President of the United States—The sentinal on the Watch-totoer of Liberty—May his vigilance be unceasing, until the Union is restored to peace and harmony, and traitors receive their just deserts
Col. H. D. Scott was called on to respond to this toast, but not being on the ground, his place was filled by Col. Thompson. 6. The Messenger of Peace—Lieutenant Geueral U. S Grant and his Army «t the G.ttes of Richmond.
Response by Mayor Lange. 7. The Patriot Heroes in this War—'Who have shed their blood in defense of Liberty and Free Government their memories are a treasure beyond price to the American people, and should be handed down through all posterity enshrined in admiration and gratitude.
Response by Rov. Lyman Abbott. 8 The Patriotic Women of America— Worthy Daughters of Heroic Mothers.
Ke^ponse by Ker. Thos. M. Martin. 9. Hoosier Soldiers—The bravest of the brave—their battle-cry is t. sound of terror to traitsrs, and of joy to their comrades in arms.
Response by Col. Wm. McLean. 10. Oliver P. Morton—A Governor worthy of the State and age in which be lives.
Response by Rev. L. Nebeker. 11. Uncle Sam's Butler—May he serve out to traitors the "wine cup" of tbe Nation's fury. 12. Our Flag and our Moito—"E Pluribus'Unum.
Response by Capt. Muzzy. 13. The United States of America—The home of down trodden humanity—may the enemies of her institutions, like snakes in Ireland, ever ftud ber soil untenable.
Response by P. B. O'Riley, Esq.
The responses were all extremely happy aod we regret that our limited apace precludes a report of tbe same.
This closed the exercises of the day, and after a benediction by Rev. Nebeker the assemblage gradaally^nelted away.
Much credit is due the President of the Day, Mayor Lmge, for the able and dignified manner in which he discharged his duties, as also to tbe Committee of Arrangements for the excellent style in whiob tbe grounds were prepared for the comfort of visitors, and good order maintained. Not the alightest accident or outbreak oocurred to mar the festivities of the occssion^
May God grant that the return of another aniversary may find us a happy and united people, enjoying the blessings of peace, prosperity and bappioww.

I—The body of an nnknown man
was found Bear the Railroad, about seven miles west of Paris, Edgar county, Ills by some beys who were out hunting berrieB. He had evidently been dead several days. His skull was broken with a club and stone lying near tbe body. He was lying a short distance from the railroad near a clump of willows, between two railroad ties and covered with willows. Hat, boots and pants had been stripped off, and were missing bad on a dark colored snmmer cloth coat, and a reddish colored vest. From a letter fouDd on the body his name is thought to be F.
