iaty of Marriage.

In opening an old book, the other day, the lirst passage that my eyes fell upon was this, COpyJit"entitle, although I do not believe every iford it contains. Tbo old writer says "Mafriagc has i« it less of beauty, but more of safety -tbao single life it hath Dot more ease/bot less danger it is more mercy and raorer Said it is fuller of sorrows and luller of joys it lies under more burdens, but ie supported by all the strengths of love and oharity„.acil those burdens are delightful.— MarmgS.05 th# mother of the world, and pre1 I'firves kingdoms, and fills cities and churches, and hedvep .itself* Cclibacy, like the fly in tbo heart of the apple, dwells in perpetual inreetness, but sita alone and is confined, und dies in singularity but marriage, like the useful bee, builds a house, and gathers sweetness from every flower, and labors and uuites into societies and republics, and sends out colonies, and feeds the world with delicacies, and obeys their ruler, and keeps order, and exercises many virtues, and promotes tho interest of mankind, and in that state of

Hood t® which God hath designed the present (•ODsrttution of the world. Now you.will admit that this is very terse 'stud beautiful.* It 13 quite like Barrow for compactness, and Jeremy Taylor for sweet iicss. But, tLB I said before, it is not ail to be agreed to, particularly tbo statement that "marriage has in it less of beauty than tho single life." There is hardly anything in the wor!'l so beautiful as the union of two loving that are united because of their love aiiti lor 110 unworthiea reason. There is hardly an augury of promise so auspicious as an «!urly lovo that looks toward marriage as its faithful seal and signet. There i3 hardly any festival among men so geoial and happy as a wedding-day.

Out 8Uthor was evidently earnest and ein-i-ere in his description but when he thought there was more beauty in a single life, he unconsciously intimated perhaps that he was the sober companion of a very oxcellent yet nither homely woman. But marriage has ntoroof beauty in it than its bride. The wifo may be lovely herself, but her wedded life is lovelier.. It is more beautiful than tiie mother, when she wears the crowus of many children, all as beautiful as herself.— For a tree is boautiful, not only in its leaves und blossoms, but in its shade and shelter.— There is a sacredness in the thought of hualvtnd and wifo which is more than beautiful. There is something tender iu tho thought of family and'a household of one's own and what is tender is better than what is beautiful.

I cannot hold |hat "celibacy, like the fly in the hem of an 'apple, dwells in perpetu a sweetness." It is rather like the fly in the heart of a tart apple that dwells in perpetual .sourness. True, marriage is more "merry •wid more sad," but if it wero not sadness, what wero merriment? Must there not be darks as well as lights in a picture? "It is fuller of sorrows and of joys but its sorrows highten its joys and joys without sorrows would never be joyful. "It lies under more burdens say rather it stands under more burdens, for marriage is strength. It puts two backs under one load, where thero was but. one beforo. Of the many men who .sink wider their burden, fewer are married th'in single.

It is quite surprising to find so many opinions in the world on tho subject of marriage. I do not mean in regard to its lawfulness, or propriety, or divine authority, but its beauty und happiness. Yet it is not to bo doubted 1I1 at most of these speculations originate ith single people. There are diversities of vices among tho married, owing to their greater or less happiness of life but the ••niijority of men who havo wives, and of women who have husbands, are very well pleased with thtt married stato and they who stand off at a distanco and laugh at it, or moralize ver it, might usually be referred with pronriety to tho fablo oT the "Fox and the

Jnipcs." The family is the most heautiful inslution on oarth, and marriage is the gate through which God meaut it should he en tercd.— [Independent.

Owen Lovejoy.

Ono of tho bravest hearted Yankees in the IIousu of Representatives is the Hon. Owen Jovc-joy, who was born in Maine in 1811— followed the plow until eighteen years of age —taught pchool to acquire funds with which to p*y his way through Bowdoin College, and tlion emigrated Westward to settle down in Illinois nj a Congregational clergyman.— .•yter preaching half a dozen years, he was dccted to tho State Legislature, and in 1856 ho came hero to take a scat in the House.— His brother, it will bo remembered, waa one of the first martyrs to the barbarism of slav^ try, and he has ever waged a bold war/are uguin3C that peculiar institution. He is a sturdy, honest -working man, and his frame, like his mind, ia compact and well-knit together. His thick, curly hair, bis clear, courageous eye, and his quadrangular breadth of features, show that he is not to be put down easily when he takes a stand, neither will he eacrifico principle even for tho sake nf party. Just now he is Chairman of tha t.oramitteo 011 thi3 District, and it. is funny to Mie tho descendants of tho I'\ F.

V.'m,

wh(?

want appropriations for tho benefit of their property, come hat in hand to petition the sturdy Covenantor, who in his heart despises them. Taken all in all, thero is probably "less discount" (to use a camp phrase) upon Owen Lovejoy than upon any othor member of tho present Congress.—[Wash. Cor. Phila. Press.

A Wist Jury num.

The district court in ono of our northern enmities was in session last summor, and afI.:.T tho first day's business was over, lawyers and others were sitting out beforo tho hotel, when a long, lank, unsophisticated countryman came up and unceremoniously mnde himself ouo of 'cm, and remarked: "Gentlomen, I wish you'd go on willi this nourt, for I want to go home—I left Betsey looking out." "Ah! said one of the lawyors. "Pray what detains vou at coin' "Why, sir," said tho eou- .rvmau, "I am fotclied here as a jui'y, and they s.iy if I go homo they'll havo to find 1110, aud they might!)': do thit as I livo a good piece off." "What jury arc you on'.'" asked one of the lawyers. "What Jury V" "Yes, tvhat jury? Is it the grand or travers jury V" "Grand or travers jury Dad fetched il I know." "Well,".said tho lawyer, "did the judge charge you?" "Woll," said he, "the little fellow that bits up in the pulpit and kinder bosses over tho crowd, gin us a talk, but I don't know whether ho charged anything or not.'

There was an explosion, and two or three of tho leg.il gentlemen tumbled off their chairs.
