Meestreca Hare.

Some few years ago there came to residf 55 in Paris, whicU ia popularly supposed to O the capital of the civilized world, a lady of i?1 great beauty and apparent wealth. Shs !3 -!represented herself as the widow of a&

Eugliah officer of the Coldstream Guards, S tr* and called herself "Meestrees Hare Whether the tale was true or lalse, it took

SI so well that in iess than two years wo find irl the fair "meestrees" still in posaession^ot the same youth and beauty, with the addition of an enormous fortune, a splendid hotel it

ti

one of the most fashionable quarters of O Pari a, eight high-bred horses in her stables, and about twenty thousand pounds worth ol diamonds in her ecrin. All this property, acquired ifi si short a time, might surely be thought sufficient to satisfy the craving ol ,, any woman on the face of the eftrth. 1 lie great Paris millionaire, who contributes an income ot five thousand a year towards it, bad enabled the lair "meestrees" to "operate" in building ground and building leases with such sure means ot success that she had become a millionaire herself. But alas! addition to ail the visible and tangible possessions mentioned above, Meestrees Hat£ had yet another, which consisted of a most devoted passion (or one of tho dandies of day—a man with fair hair and mustache, yellow gloves and a clean 6hirt collar, but without a single idea beyond. The youth, 'who'TVad lately inherited the fortune of tno ®. chief magistrate, came one day recently to '.i 1 take his leave of "the Hare," as the lady is latniiiarly called among her fellows. He was frank, if not just, in his dealings faith her,

^M'ju'.iujiinced his return tobis native place, Ch^iubery, for the purpose of gettiog marI ried/ Thereupon a terrible scene of'dtsappointed affection—tears, supplications and tears—all of ho avail. The old menace of suicide, too—tho ono of all others tho gallant knew best, and laughed at tho longest. "I will throw myself into tho Seine." "Ob, yes. and be fished out and brought home dripping wet "I will poison myself if you go." "Oh, yes, and have tho horrid stomach ... p.ump and tho apothecary—pshaw I I have.known and seen it all!" "I5ut yott have never seen this," exclaimed the ladyy s'efeing one of the waxlights from tho table and set a fire to tho flounces and furbelows, spread out yards wide by her crinoline. In an instant her whole person was enveloped in flames and through the corridor of the General Hotel, the echo of the shrieks on pain resounded with appalling effect. Tho flames were extinguished after a while, but the victim lies in a hopeless state, suffering the martyrdom of pain, which those who have suffered from burning declare to be more intense than any other. Her life is despaired of, for tho whole body is said to bo one mass of burns—while by a singular chance the face and nock unscathed, still retain tho beauty which has made the

Hare" ono of the great celebrities of Paris. The whole of the demi-monde at first gathered in the sympathy of fellowship round her bed but soon one alone took possesion of the place, and drove the traffickers of sentiment from the chamber where death was waiting to seize his prey from tho hand of the doctor. This single defender is the cure of the Madelcin who has rescued the soul from perdition, nnd obtained the bequest of ah tho property of .the dying Magdnlen to tho church, should she die, and vow of retirement ta a convent, should she live. The triumph is great. Demi monde. awed into silence at first, is beginning to chatter about this sad resolve while the cause of this dread catastrophe, after twialing his mustach and reflecting that after all there was another proof of the indcstructability of a woman by suicido for loue, as she had been rescued and Btill might livo, drove to tho railway, nnd started off as first-class passenger, to bo married at Chambery.

The Power ol Gentleness. No bad man is ever brought to repentance by angry words by bitter, scornfnl reproaches. He fortifies himself againt reproof, and burls back foul charges in the face of his accuser. Yet guilty and hardened as he seems, he has a heart in his bosom, and may be melted to toars by a gentle voice. Whosorver, therefore, can restrain his disposition to blaino and find fault, and can"bring him* self down to a fallen brother, will soon find a way to better fealings within. Pity and pa tience cro the two keys which unlocked the human heart. They who have been most successful laborors among the poor and vicious, have been tho most forbearing. Said tho celebrated St. Vincent de Paul, "If it has plerscd heaven to employ tho most ini-i-erabloof men for the conversion of t=ouls, they have themselves confessed that it was ty tne patience and sympathy which lie nad ror them. Even tho convicts, among whom #tl have lived, caa be gained in no other way-

immense force of tho current in Niagara river'near tho suspension bridge, is strikingly illustrated by ono or two facts relabel by a gentleman who recently attempted to sound tho river at that point. Wo may remark here thit the current is so strong that tho river cannot bo sounded at that point and probably never will. "Another attempt was made with a similar iron of bout ten pounds weight, attached to a No. 11 wire, nil freely suspended, so as not t,o impede tho fall of the weight. I then lot the weight fall from the bridge, at the height of.525 feet. It struck tho surface fairly, with the point down, and must havo sunk to some depth, but was not longer out of sight thun a second, when it mado its appearance ngain ou the surfaco, about one hundred feet down the stream, and skipped along like a chip until it was cheeked by tho wire. Wo then commenced hauling in slowly, which inado tho iron bounce liko iv ball, when a cake of ice struck it and ended our sport.— am eatisfiied that no metal lias sv.flicient specific gravity to pierco that current, even with a momcutuin acquired by a fall of 225 feel. Tho velocity ot tho iron, when striking, must have been equal to 124 feet per second, and consequently its momentum was near ,000 pounds. Its surfaco opposed to tho curront was about. 50 superficial inches This will give an idea of tho strength of that '•urrent, nnd at the same timo hint at the Titan forccs that have been at work to scoop out tho bed of the Niagara river,

A. private letter savn thntasnd occurrence took ploco last week near South Warren, in Wyoming county. Throe children, at play with ii cat, had hidden in a cupboard, when t.ho animal closed the door, which fastened by ti spring catch. Their mother was absent from home, washing and before th*y were rescued two of them were su(l\tc:itod. They had worn tho skin oil' their limbs, elbows and shoulders in fruitless endeavors to got the cupboard open.

An Imiur.».Tc: OU Well.

Tho llarrisburg Union, of the b'th instant, rays: Ono of tho most valuable veins of petroleum yotdiscovcred was lately struck on the Furreil firm, Oil creek, Venango county, Pa. Tho well commenced flowing on Saturday la«t, the oil spouting up to a liight of fifty leet, with a roar like a hurricane, and escaping at the rate of two thousand barrels per day. A stop-cock wis *ot. on alter much trouble, nnd the llow can now be regulated tosuit the demand. Another (lowing well in the viciuilv was so affected bv the opening of tho new well, that its yield "decreased over three hundred barrels per day. The Parrel) well, which is abofit four hundred and fifty feet deep, was at last accounts llowing steadily at tho rate of twelve hundred barrels a day. This, even at the moderate prices now ruling at the wells, would \io!d the owtiers $3,ti00 a day.

Induced by the extensive sale and universal popularity of Hoofland's German Bitters, (purely vegetable,) hosts of ignorant Quacks and unscrupulous adventurers, have opened upon suffering humanity the flood-gates of Nostrums in the shape of poor whisky, vilely compounded with injurious drugs, and chrissened Tonics, Stomachis and Bitters.

Beware of the innumerable array ef Alcoholic preparations in plethoric bottles and big bellied kegs, under the medestappellation of Bitters which instead of curing, only aggravate disease, and leave the disappointed sufferer in despair.

HOOFLAND'S GERMAN BITTERS Are not anew and untried article, but have steod the test of fifteen years trial by the American public and their reputation sale, are not rivalled by any similar preparation.

The proprietors "have thousands of Letters from the most omiuent

CLERGYMEN, LAWYERS, PHYSICIANS,

AND fiCITIZENS

Testifying, their own personal knowledge, to the beneficial effects and medical virtues of these bitters.

Do you want Sleep Well Do you want a Brisk and Vigorous Feeling If you do, use HOOFLAND'S GERMAN BITTERS. From J. Newton, DD., Editor of the En cyclopedia of Religious Knowledge.

Although not disposed to favor or recommend Patent Medicines in general, through distrust of their ingredients and effecis I yet know of no sufficient reason why a man may not testify to the benefit he believes himself to have received from any simple preparation, in the hope that he may thus contribute to the benefit of others.

I do this the more readily in regard to Hoofland's German Bitters, prepared by Dr. C. M. Jackson, of this city, because I was prejudiced against them for many years, nnder the impression that they were chiefly an alcoholic mixture. 1 am indebted to my friend Robert Shoemaker, Esq., for the removal of this prejudice by proper tests, and for encouragement to try them, when suffering from great and long continued debility. The use of three bottles of these Bitters, at the beginning of the present year, was followed by evident rolief, and restoration to a aegree of bodily andental vigor which I had not felt for six months before, and had almost despaired of regaining. I therefore thank God and my friend for dirrecting m».to!"Oft "Bfie of them. "J. NKWTON BROWN. jpHiULDKLFHiA, June 23. 1862.

IMPORTANT TO SOLDIERS. We call the attention of all having relations or friends in the army to tho fact that "Hoofland's German Bitter's" will cure nine-tenths of the diseases induced by exposures and privations Incident to camp life. In the lists published almost daily in the newspapers, on the arrival of the sick, it wiil be noticed that a very large propertion are suffering from debility. Every case of that kind can be readily cured by Hoofland's German Bitters. Diseases resulting from disorders of the digestive organs are speedily removed. We have no hesitation in stating that, if these Bitters were freely UBed among our soldiern, hundreds of lives might bo saved that otherwise will bo lost.

We call particular attention

HtLAMLPHIA, AUgUSt 23, 1362

Messrs. Jones It

Ktans:—Well,

gentlemen, you

Hoofland's Gerruin Bitters ha» saved my life. There is no mistake in this. It is vouched for by numbers of my comtades, some ef whose names are appended, and who were fully cognizant of ail the circumstances of ray rase. 1 am, and have beefi fcr the lastfoar years, a member of Sherman's celebrated battery, and under the immediate command of Captain R. B. Ayros. Through the exposure attendant upon my arduous duties, I was attacked in November last with inflamation of the inngs, and wab for seventy-two days in the hospital, lhis was followed by great debility, heightened Dy an attack of dysentery. I was then removed from the White House, and sent to this city on board the steamer State of Maine, from which 1 landed on the 28th June. Since that time I have been about as low as any one could be and still retain a spark ef vitality. For week or more I was scarcely able to swallow anything, and if I did force a morsel dowu.it was Immediately thrown up again. 1 could not even keep a glass of water on my «tomacb. Life could not last nnder such circumstances and, accordingly, the physicians, who had been working faithfully, though unsuccessfully to rescue me from the grasp of the dread archer, frankly told me they could do no more for me, and advised me to see a clergyman, and to make such disposition of my limited funds as best suited me. Au acqiiuintaoce who visited me at the hospital, Mr. Frederick Steinbrown, of Sixth below Arch street, advised me, as a forlorn hope, to try your Bitters, and kindly procured a oottle. Fromt time I commenced taking them the gloomy shadow of death receded, and I am now, thank God fori getting better. Though I liave taken but two bottles, I have already gained ten pounds, and I fee Banguiue of being permitted to rejoin my wile and daughter, from whom I have heard nothing for gigbteen months for, gentlemo.._ 1 am a loyal Vireiniau, from the vicinity of Front Royal. Dr. Coaden will devote special attention to the treatment of Cancer and Cancerous affections. In calling attention to my Cancer Antidote, a new treatment for Cancer, permit me t* sav that it is the most wonderfal discovery ever mads in medicine. It is the great desideratam so long sought for by the liedical Frofessian and the afflicted with cancer. Its operation is truly astonishing, without a parallel, and is the only known antidote to cancer and all cancerous afflictions the modo^'operandi of the antidote is apparently by entering into the chemical composition of the cancer, cancerous, malignant er unhealthy growth, thereby removing all l{fe and vitality, antldoting, killing and destrojing the cancer, every particle root and fibre belonging to it, withont pain or the use of the knife without caustic eating or burning without the loss of blood, or in the least affecting the sound flesh. It can be applied to the naked eya or an open wound, as easily and freely as water. By this means large cancers can be removed from vital parts, the eye, large blood •easels, Ac., where no other treatment could possibly be used and in doing so we feel assured of making permanent cures when all other treatment falls. The medical fraternity and all interested are invited to call, and I will exhibit a large nnmber of cancers that I have thus removed and preserved, and if desired will refer to hundreds of cases cured throughout he country.

Consumption, Asthma, Bronchitis, Pharyngitis, and all affections, treated by Inhalation, or otherwise. Particular attention paid to all diseases of the Bye and Ear. such as partial blindness or deafness^ either acnte or chronic. I am in possession of almost anever falling remedy for Fits and Apopletic Disases. Scrofula, Rheumatism, and

A class of maladies prevail to a tearful extent in the community, dooming at least 100,000 youth of both sexes annually, to an early grave. Those diseases »re very imperfectly understood. Tbeir external manifestation, or symptoms are Nervous Debility, Relaxation and Exhaustion Marasmus or wasting and consumption of the tissues of the whole body shortness of breathing or hurled breathing on ascending a hill or flight of stairs great palpitation of the Heart Asthma, Bronchitis and sore Throat shaking of tho Hands and Limbs aversion to society and to business or study dimness of eye sight, loss of Memory, dhziness of the Head, Neuralgia, Pain in various parts of the body Pains in the back or limbs, Lumbago, Dyspepsia or Indigestion, irregularity ofthe bowels, deranged secietions of the Kidneys and other glands of the body, as Leucorrhoea or Fleur -dlbus, 4c. Likewise Epilepsy, //ysteria and Nervous Spasms.

Now in ninety nine cases out of every one hun dred, all the above named disorders, and a host others not named, as Consumption of the Lungs an that most insidious and wily form of Consumption of the Spinal Nerves, known as Tabes Dorsales, and Tabes mesenteries, have their seat and origin in diseases of tho Pelyic Viscera. Hence the want success on the part of old school practice in treating symptoms only.

Dr. Andrew Stone, Physician to tho Troy Lung and Hygienic Institution, is now engaged in treating this class of modern maladies with the most astonishing success. The treatment adopted by tho Institution is new it is based uponscientific principles with new discovered remedies, without minerals or poisons.
