-v -c. To Our Friends.
With the closing of the year 1898. our subscription book §hows a large amount of delinquent subscriptions due the DESPATCH by friends both at iiome and abroad. Now friends, one loingle delinquent is a small item, and of itself is so small that we care but
little for it but when we come to putting them all together the aggregate amount is something phenominal .and not to be despised by any one.
If any one of our delinquent friends had the amount due us, they could ..easily secure a good residence* prop erty in Waynetown and pay the cash for it, and so could we but we wouldn't do it. If we had the ^rjmojtnt due us we would proceed at once to improve the DESPATCH in several different wa\8, We need new machinery, new type, and many things which would very greatly as-
sist us in the publication of the DESPATCH, and we want to ask that ..each and every delinquent remit at least what he owes up to the first of the year, and some in advance if ^convenient. «We need every cent. 3 due and we belieye our friends will appreciate this fact and assist us by squa'ing their subscription account.
Don't put it off, but attend to this
.'v' The year 1898 was one of the most successful in the history of Waynetown business, enterprise and *. improvement. While other towns

To Pension Confederates

J-.-'l-r- Senator Butler, of North Carolina, has given notice of an amendment ^he will introduce to the pension .. ^appropriation bill to pensioning ex

ment is as follows: "That on and after the passage of
this bill, every pension law now on 1. the statute books shall apply to every ?r'|ii)valid soldier, widow, minor child,

Divorce Law.
A meeting of those interested in securing a revision cf the divorce laws of Indiana was held Saturday afternoon at Indianapolis. The movement was originated by the Friends, but the Methodists, Presbyterians and Christians were repreresented ^also at the meeting and promised hearty cooperaton, Th# discussion was first in the direction of reducing the uumber of causes for which a divorce can be granted. This was not deemed advisable, and the next proposition was that a law should be enacted forbidding the remarriage of a divorced person unless tne divorce had been granted for adultery. This was aiso rejt-cted, it was agreed that a large per cent tf the evil of divorce results from those desiring to marry agaiu at onbe. A bill to forbid marriage divorced person within two years after tbe decree shall have been grauted was favored, and a subcommittee consisting of S. JS Nicholson, Kev. T. A. Goodwin and Mrs. Mary (foddard was appointed to draw up such a bill and present it to the legislature. There was also a suggestion that a bill should be drawn requiring a year to elapse between the filing of a petition for divorce and the hearing of the case, so that the parties might have opportunity to patch up their differences. No action was taken on this suggestion, and. BO far as those present are concerned, but the one bill will be presented.
How Is Your Inheritance. The revenue officers hrfve received instructions to pay attention to the wills filed since July 18. 1898, In all cases where the legacy amounts to $10,000 or more the tax must be paid immediately and the stamps affixed, In computing the tax upon nuch wills, the department has laid down a series of rules that make tbe process rather complicated. In all cases the widow is always exempt from taxation. The distributive share cf each ehitd is 75 cents on each $100. Other distributives are taxedyrom $1.50 to $5 on each $100, the rare varying with the degree, re moval of the heir or legatee from ihpdescepdeiji. :^The rates, '"^d ifor iiky —ftftr^to $25\0U0, When the legacy is more than the latter amount the rate i-« increased correspondingl}*.
A Fine Piece of Color Work. An experienced art critic gives it as his opinion that there will be no handsomer piece of color work issued this year than Hood's Sarsaparilla Calendar for 1899. It is not only useful, but artistic and beautiful, and up to date. The charming
American Girl" whose beautiful face appears with a delicately painted flag in the background, makes a pleasing feature wnicli anyone will be pleased to have before him the whole of 1899. We suppose druggists will have this calendar, or a copy may be obtained bv sending 6 cents toC. I, Hood Co.. Lowel, Mass, -$• ws.,

An exchange tells tbe story of an old woman in Tennessee who was sick and to whom the doctor had given medicine in capsules. The patient swallowed the medicine with some suspicion for she bad never taken that kind of a dose before, but bad heared'a great deal about the dynamite cartridges, Presently her daughter sought to soothe her by lightning her pipe with a live coal from the hearth—there was a scream from the old lady, '-Take it away chile! Don't come near me with that fire while I've got them ca'tridges in me."
TheMewtown Poultry and Pet Stock Association closed their annual meeting Friday, and it was a most successful affair. The exhibit of poultry was finer and larger this year than last, and the home breeders are highly pleased to see their birds score so high, while the visitors are loud in praise of the treatment received at the hands of the Richland township people. The attendance was good and the interest manifested bespeaks that Richland has maintained its past reputation of doing whatever it undertakes in a manner creditable to them and to the county —Vcedersburg News.
Some Iffs.
If responsibility doesn't weigh anything it isn't responsibility. If some men go as they pay it will lake them along time to get there.
If you want to get even with a a man, pay him what you owe lum. if people could ride up in elevators there would be less room al the top.
If the wages of sin is death it must be a man's own ghost that walks on pay day.
If matches are made in heaven the shipping clerk makes some awful blunders.
If the man who wants the earth succeeded in getting it he would kick about the taxes.
If the interstate railways are trunk lines, little suburban roads must be bundle lines,
If you speak evil of a man in bis absence it's cowardly, and if in bis presence its dangerous. m» fo§«*L.

Now let everyl ly get down io business with tbe beging ot the New Ye»r. Turn your attention to business and the varied interests of :he t^wn and make things "hum" in general thepsscoming [year. Tlie business interests and enterprise of aoy town is just what its people make it, and as for Waynetown a general push, all together, will do just what the town is most in need of. a|
Reports have it that no less than seven liquor applications will come up before the Board of Comm. 3siorers at their next session in iviarcb, for a license to sell liquors in Wayne town. Seems to us this is a little early for a correct judging of just to what degree our thirst will have reached, however we are all growing thirsty very fast and it might be that a few extra accomodations cmld be added to tbe seven already suggested.
Life is made up of contrasts. In all things they vividly affect us, and arc made to supply much both of our happiness and wholesome discipline. Sickness imparts an exquisiie sensation to returning health, which the uniformly robust cannot know sorrow gives birth to a jo/only the afflicted can taste and long fear and anxious suspense end in rapture, in the hour of hope. All the darkness, indeed, of this world is but to show off its light all its frailty to direct us to Almighty strength and all its short lived scenes to prefigure what is undying and eternal.' 'i

Bischof of the *-Big Store" at Crawfordsville has a change of ad in this issue that will interest all of our lady readers.:
Our grain buyers'are busy caring for the large quantity of grain,—mostly corn being hauled to this market. As acorn market Waynetown is one of the best in this section of the state. Only a few years ago Wayne township did not raise a sufficient amount of corn for her own consumption, but the conditions have changed and now the township ships thousands of bushels, besides having a sufficient for home use. As a producer Wayne township, is not beaten in the state, and as a market no town excells Waynetown, in prices, accomodations or courteous treatment.
