INDIANA.
A permanent roller skating rink has been established in Edinburg. At Winimac, a young man named Jack Whipple was strangled to death by goitre lately. Worthington received its first mail over the Terre Haute and Sontheastern-railroad on new year's day.
Arthur Hyland, of Winamac, was drowned in Bruce's lake, while skating, on a recent Sunday.
Wm. Clampet, of Heltonville, shot himself on new year's day, for love of a Miss Todd, who did not reciprocate.
A man named Brunning was iniured, it is supposed fatally, at North Vernon, by being caught between the bumpers while couplings cars.
During a quarrel at Fortville, William Lester, a young boy, struck Franklin James in the forehead with a stone, fatally injuring him.
Robert Mellette, aged about 19, son of Dr. U. N. Mellette, of Williamsburg, Johnson county, was taken with scarlet lever and died, recently.
Elder A. W. Connor late pastor of the Christian church at Milroy, Rush county, has accepted at call from the Christian church at Edinburg.
Willie Humphrey, aged 10 years, son of James Humphrey, of Fortville, got his hand badly mutilated by a cider mill. It will require amputation. Frank Jones was shot near Liston one night last week, by some unknown person. The ball entered his back and inflicted a very severe wound.
The completion of the Indianapolis, Decatur and Springfield road is a very important addition to the western roads from Indianapolis.
The New Albany rolling mills have advanced the rates on bar iron to 3 1/2 cents per pound, and the wages of employes have been correspondingly advanced.
The Cincinnati, Hamilton and Indianapolis is rapidly becoming an important part of the consolidated line of the Cincinnati, Hamilton and Dayton, and other companies.
The Ohio and Mississippi road has greatly improved, both the main line to St. Louis and the branch line to Louisville, under the stimulus of the heavy business of this year of prosperity.
The Indianapolis, Bloomington and Western road has been taken out of the hands of the receiver, and is now thoroughly reorganized under the name of the Indiana, Bloomington and Western.
The indications also are that there will
be a consolidation of the lines from Terre Haute via Danville to Chicago, which, with the road to Evansville, will form another through line from the Ohio to Chicago.
The New-Albany national bank has reduced its capital stock one-half. The First national and the Merchants' national, of the same city, have made considerable reductions in their capital stock during the past year.
At Taylorville there resided until recently a school eacher named Harris, who, having taken undue advantage of an orphan girl, left for the west. Returning to attend the funeral of his mother, he was arrested at the grave.
The employes of the Ohio Falls car works, at Jeffersonville, have demanded an increase of ten per cent, in wages. They have been offered a present increase of five per cent., with an additional five per cent. in three months.
The Indianapolis, Cincinnati and Lafayette and the Cincinnati, Lafayette and Chicago roads now form a consolidated line from Cincinnati to Chicago, with a thorough reorganization of the officers and a judicious distribution of these at Cincinnati, Indianapolis and Lafayette.
The Louisville, New Albany and Chicago, road, which hitherto has been only a local road, yet which of late years has paid good returns on its reorganized capital, will become a part of the Louisville, Nashville and Great Southern system, and will at once take rank as a through line from the southern states to Chicago and the northwest.
The Logansport, Crawfordsville and Southwestern road has been sold, under foreclosure, to the Vandalia company, and is now part of the Indianapolis and Terre Haute road. Under the new management the road will be thoroughly repaired ; the special coal interest will be more fully developed and the entire line placed under better management than was possible in the hands of a receiver.
During Christmas week, Mrs. Frank Worley, of Ellitsville, near Bloomington, invited all the children of the village without regard to rank, position or whealth, to an entertainment at her elegant home. There were eighty in attendance. After enjoying a variety of sports they were furnished with refreshments. All.agreed that it was a happy day, and will long remember the pleasure afforded them by their kind hostess.
The year 1879 has been a remarkable one in railway progress in Indiana. During the year several important new lines have been opened, but the most noteworthy changes relate to the reorganization and consolidation of the old companies. Nearly all the travel and traffic between the west and New York and other eastern seaports must pass though Indiana. Hence the general revival of business has had a specially favorable effect on railway property in this state.
The grand consolidation of roads from Toledo to Omaha, by which the Wabash became a part of the Toledo, St. Louis
and Western, is the greatest of the changes in the railway system of the
state and is one, the importance of which
is but feebly realized. The ullti-
mate seems to be a united in- terest from San Francisco to New York, with all the advantages and disadvantages which are included in such a collossal scheme. The immediate effect has been the diversion of a large traffic to the Wabash line which hilherto has been carried over the lines eastward from Chicago.
Anew product made from petroleum is* a jelly called "Vaseline," which is of the greatest utility in medicine, pharmacy and for toilet ure. Physicians all over the world have discovered its great value in the treatment of wounds, burns, skin diseases, rheumatism, catarrh and every ail ment where a liniment is needed, and in almost every hospital in America and Europe this substance is now in constant use-, and is acknowledged not only to be the best treatment, but also one of the most impoitant recent additions to medicine. It is put up in bottles bv the Chesebrough Manufacturing Co, of New York, and as a family remedy, it is without doubt the best in use, its healing and pain allaying qualities being superior to those of any knbwn substance, while the speedy relief it affcrds for piles and chilblains is almost magical. As an emollient, Vaselines Is away ahead of anything else, as it renders the'skin smooth, soft and clear, and our lady friends will find it not only the best,' but perhaps the sole substance Which will really preserve and restore to the complexion the hues of youth, making the cheeks like velvet and the skin like satin. The complexion powders in common uie, are, as a rule, injurious to the skin and destructive of any complexion, while vaseline is entirely healthful and beneficial. There- is also made a "Pomade Vaseline," which is said to be of great benefit to the air, keeping it soft and glossy, prefentine and curing dandruff, and keeping the scalp healthfm and free from dis&asp, aad from those objectionable creatures which, sdmetimes find a dwelling there* NnmberlesB instances are citetr of how bykhe tms pon^ ade thin hair has TeanameSr'a vigorous growth. iSoth-the pure Vaseline and ihe popiade are put up twenty-five centbottltes itiid are to be found at all firstclass druggists, and we aidvise our readers to make-a^ trial, of? this ^Onderful substanee, ..and -iwe-1 hink, they T#ill find its claims to merit "not in the. least exaggerated.
