An article in the first pane of thisdav's ra per, upon the subject of Roads and Canal?, merits an attentive reading by every citizen.

Robert Lucas, the democratic candidate for Governor in the state of Ohio, has been re elected. New Jersey. The Democratic ticket for members to Congress, and to the state Legislature, have succeeded in New Jcrey by Inrge majorities. Georgia. The Democratic ticket has Fucceeded in Georgia, and Nullification has been strangled in that state. The Wabash river commenced rising a few days ago, and rose several feet, it is now falling. Wak mitii Fkanck. It is probable from (he latest indications that the French government will not fulfil the late treaty negotiated by Mr. Rives, whereby the long delayed compensation was stipulated to our merchants for spoliations committed years ago, upon American commerce by French vessels. It is rumored that the American Minister (Mr. Livingston)

nas 6igmtieu to our government his desire to b .recalled and to withdraw from a iccne of prevarication and bad faith. We hope the President will carry out his favorite maxim of "demanding nothing but vhat ts rtght and si'hmitting to nothing that is xvko.nu." Xaskcillc Banner. The people of western Ohio have the promise of deriving from the Miami Canal a benefit even greater than that which it will confer as a means of commercial intercourse. The whole country through which the northern section of this canal will pass for a distance of one hundred miles, although very fertile, is so remarkably destitute of water power that it is almost an uninhabited wilderness. An Ohio paper states, that by diverting the head waters of the great Miami to tho north, and laying up the flood waters of the St. Mary's river and other small streams in large "reserviors, and discharging the whole through thccanal northward by a descent of three hundred feet, a water power will be produced capable of working from one hundred to one and fifty pairs of large mill stones, or other machinery re

quiring a power to that extent. The. whole length of the Miami Canal will be about two hundred and fifty miles. The southern section, from Cincinnati to Dayton, a distance of sixty-five miles, is completed, and already the State of Ohio receives an annual revenue of five thousand dollars from the water power, although only a mall portiouof it has been as yet leased. In Spain the troops of Carlos and the Queen had two or three skirmishes but the movements of Zumnlacarreguy betray loss of strength and confidence. Galignani's Messenger of the 20th of August, contains information, said to be derived from a letter of the 23th from Bayonne, which says, a terrible battle was fought on the 22d, between one of the principal columns of Rodil and El Pastor, and theCarlists of Biscay, near Liquieto. The Queen's troops proved victorious driving their opponents into the sea 2000 perishing by the sword. It was reported that the foreign battalions in Portugal were about to enter Spain to join the Queen's force . Hostilities have been commence! between the Sultan and Pacha orHaypt. It is expected that Russia will takepart in the campaign, being bound to the Porte by a treaty offensive and deffensive. A public dinner was given to Earl Grey atEdimburgh on the 15th of September. The important facts 1 have had in my late communications occasion to record, were of a nature to lead you to anticipate a fresh rupture between the Sultan and Mehcmet Ali; to-day I have to inlorm you that this event has taken place. With one accord both parties have "cried havoc, and let slip the dogs of war.' At the head of ali his disposable troops, the governor ofEgypf, under pretence of quelling the insurrection in Syria, and rescuing his son from the critical position to which, as he gave it out, tho victorious insurgents had reduced him, has landed in th it country and completed his preparations fra new campaign. Upon receiving information of the explosion of events it had for some time been intent in preparing, the Porte greedily seizes this opportunity, which the exaggerated reports transmitted had indu

ced it to consider as highly favorable to the furtherance ot its designs, to vindicate its injured rights, and hurries on as many regiments of the guard and of the line as the safety of Constantinople allows her to spare, to reinforce the army Redschiltl Mehemct Pasha has collected at Sivas. The lleet is to sail in two days hence. Constantinople, August 5. A Tartar, arrived a few days ago from Sivas, brought despatches from Reschild Mehemet Pasha, announcing the death of Ibrahim Pasha. According to this statement tho Commander-in-Chief of the Egyptian army, after being defeated by the insurgents from Zaplooz, was obliged to take refuge, with a detachement con

sisting of a few hundred men, in a small i

fortress, which after a desperate resist

ance, was taken by storm. Ibrahim was taken alive by the enemy, and put to

death in the most barbarous manner. After cutting off his hands and feet, t lie Arabs tied him over the mouth of a loaded cannon, and by firing it, put a termination to his suffering and existence. 'This information produced the greatest satisfaction to the Sultan, and excited at Court as well as at the Porte a joy which could not be controlled. Numerous ail forwarded to Rescind from Syria, and signed by the most influential men in the country, were at the same time transmitted to the Porte. After an enumeration of the vexations to which Ibrahim has subjected them, thev implore tho assitancc of the S il fan'stroops, declaring it their determination to . . t

raise in mass against ineir oppressors, ns soon as the providential interference they solicit shall arrive. Another letter directed from Syria, confirming the death of Ibrahim, was sent three days ago to the palace. 'This concurrence of testimony left no doubt in the Sultan's mind that the information was correct, and induced him to issue the most pressing on'rs fur the departure of the Regiments appointed to the reinforcement of the army under the command of Red-

scliild Pasha. Yesterday morning a regiment of the Imperial Guard was embarked for Kara Missal. It is to proceed thenco to loonia, where the troop-, marched from Constantinople and to establish their

headquarters. The following circular addressed bv Boghoz Bev to the different Consuls at Alexandria, and of which a copy arrived in town yesterday, proves that the insurrection in Syria has been quelled, and that the Sultan, on reckoning on the dreaded Ibrahim's death has been reckoning without his host: 4Sir I hasten to translation of a letter from his Highness Ibrahim Pasha, dated Jescr, the lTih 1250, (June the 2bh,) the original of which has been sent to Jaffa, and the conv of which has arrived to-day from his Highness, the Viceroy's representative, by a dro.iicdary courier.
