VINCENNES, APRIL 5, 183-1.
The books for receiring subscriptions
to the Branch of the State Bank of Indiana, located in this place will l opened on Monday next, it is expected the stock will be immediately taken, as it is said the people are not backward in attending to their individual interests. The Election for township officers will
take place on Monday next, This business belongs alone to the people; and they will ec to it. In Vincennes township there are a number of candidates for Constable ; three to be elected. Associate Judge. It is very desirable that there should be speedily an election of Associate Judge in this county, as without euch election we have but part cf a Commissioners court.

ARRIVALS. Fairy Queen, fro
Envoy,
Andrew Gardner, Esq. has been appointed by the Governor Commissioner un der the act of the last session of the Indiana legislature, for the improvement of the navigation of the Wabash river. I am authorised to say that John Barekjian, Jr. is a candidate for the office of Associate Judge, to fiil the vacancy occasioned by the death of the lion. R. P. Trice.
A boy about H year of age, who carried the mail between South Beud and Fort Wayne, cut open the mail bags on Saturday last near this town. lie opened all the letters, but it does not appear that any of them had contained money, except one in which one dollar had been enclosed lor a printer in Pennsylvania. Th bags and letters were discovered soon afterwards and brought to town. The carrier was immediately pursued and was apprehended next morning; he is now in the jail at this place. Fort Wayne. ScnfL

Feom the Glore 'Men who have to labor from ten to twelve hours in the day, know little and care Utile about the Bank question, provided they get their wages." The above is from the National Intelligencer of the 19th instant, the organ of the opposition, published in this city. It speaks tinquestionably, the ruling conviction of
the federal party, now struggling against the national administration. It is in accordance with the principle which has constituted the corner stone of the creed of the federal party, ever since th davs of John Adams, when it was proclaimed by that great patriarch of federalism, thst mankind are by nature divided into two classes, gentlemen and simple men the one qualified to govern in public affairs, the other destined only fir manual employments and servile labor! It is also in accordance entirely, with the well known principles ot a leading opposition SenaU.r, Air Leigh, of Virginia, who holds that the "dav laborers"' in this country are but "slaves,1' subject to the power of property, in the true spirit of the above extract from the Intelligencer, representing the day laborer as totally regardless of all in
fluences, save the hope of getting lrom
property a daily stipend ! liir Mr. Leigh:
"Slaves, in the eastern part ot tins State, (Virginia.) fiil the place of the peasantry of Europe of the peasantry or day labur ers of the nonslaveholding States of thi:
Union."' Under the impulse of the same aristo cratic spirit which dictated the position of the Intelligencer above quoted, Mr. Leigh follows out his creed to the same result precisely, and nearly in the same language. Thus, lie has said "I ask gentlemen to say, whether they believe lint those who are obliged to defend on thtir daily labor for daily subsistence, can or docverenter into political affairs? They never do never will never can." With such arbitrary views of our countrymen, with such oppressive and degrading opinions of die Anierrv.n People, to

Is it surprising thai they fust contrive, and then cling to measures, and political corporations, which art1 wholly inconsistent with the spirit ot our age, and with the genius ot our G oernmeut, and with the niiin and inherent feelings of our People. she took in 1S11 against the Bank of the United States. And now the glorious spi-l rit of the democracy of the Key stone State leads the way against the monopoly rebukes the insidious attempt of the late majority in the Virginia Legislature to recharter the Bank by restoring thede-' posites and gives its immense strength to the impulse with which the people of the Old Dominion have roused themselves to counteract that movement of Richmond politicians, and to restore her favorite son .Mr. Uives, to the Senate and to the service of the democracy of the Union. On Tuesday last Mr. Perkin's able report, conclding with the following resolutions, was taken up in the Senate of Pennsylvania. 1. "Resolved, That the present Bank of the United States, ought not to be rechart-
ered by Congress. 2. "Resolved, That the Government Deposites; which have been withdrawn from the Bank of the United States ouht not to be restored." For these resolutions, Mr Boyd Bank man) offered a substitute, resohing "That the present Bank of the United
States should be rechartered" that the afkil election vincennes
withdrawal of the Government Deposites "is considered unconstitutional, illegal, and unjust and that the revenue hereafter collected should "be placed in the Bank of the United States On the question thus presented, an animated debate took place, Messrs Ringland
(Speaker,) Perkins, Penrose, Dickey, and Reed, opposing the Bank. A motion to postpone the whole subject was lost and then Mr. Parker (an anti-mason) proposed to postpone Mr. Boyd's substitute in favor of the Bank, for the purpose of introducing another, declaring "that in the opinion of the Legislature ot Pennsylvania, a Bank of the United States ought to be established during the present session of the National Legislature.' The resolution for a Bank of the U-
