The Land Ml. On Thursday, the 5th
instant, some sharp shooting look place in the Senate of the U. States between Mr j
Cl iv anJ Mr. Denton, on this subject. The President, on that day, returned the Land Biil to the Senate, accompanied by :i lengthy Message, "slating the grounds on which he had declined signing the Dill," which w as sent him on the last day of the Hte session of Congress. In the course of Mr. Clay's remark?, lie charged the President with taking advantage of the shortness of the session with despotically keeping silence and retaining the Dill; a 'proceeding' which Mr. C. pronounced unprecedented and alarming, and which the people would not tolerate, 'unless they w ere lost to all sense of what was due to the legislative branch of the
government, to themselves, and to those principles of liberty which had been transmitted to them from the Revolution.' The National Intelligencer states that uMr. Clay denied that the constitution gave to the President ten days to consider bills, except at the Ion:; session.''1 Though the attack of Mr. Clay cm the President is groundless absurd, we can scarcely vlicvc he made the silly denial attributed to him, as every school-boy in the country Itnows that the constitution m ikes no dis-

tution and exercised by all his predecessors pronounce a constitutional discharge of duty on his part, tyranny and dcrlare the Message the fundamental law required him to transmit to the senate, oa of order! Well might Mr. Benton say, 'a sThameful and unfounded attack bad been made on the President.1 We have only time to add, that Mr. Clav has commenced operations as we anticipated. His course is not only ridiculous, but outrageous and must be so pronounced by the intelligent of all parties.
