VINCENNES, SEPTEMBER 1833.
As matter for reference, 1 have copied into my paper, the official statement of the polls at the late election for members of Congress itx this state, so far as received, and all except one district are given. The last accour.ts from New Orleans, and from Natchez represents the yellow fever to l;e raging with dreadful mortality, Til both places. The Casket for August, has been received. The Columbus Chronicle of the 11th instant, states, that John Jones, charged with the murder of John Ray, has been found GUIL'I Y. This is the third time he has been convicted on the same charge tl'eatern jlnnotator.
FOR THE "W EST HUN" SUN". EDUCATION N(. X. I quote a paragraph from the former article to introduce the subject and to correct a slight error in it. ;Thus it will be seen that there arc tiro fundamental operations in changing the how man if of collections, parcels or quantities, and, that, bv the two arithmetical
rules of AdJitioti and Subtraction, all the correspondent changes of the numbers may be effected And, that, as there are tiro distinct cases of each fundamental operation, so there arc two rule?, M:;itiplicnti'jti and Division, added for convenience and expedition. The rules, therefore, for the changes of numbers, are four." The same two numbers may be used in working by these lour rules, and four dif
ferent answers obtained. 3 and 15 aro IS; Amount. 3 times 15 are 15; Product. 3 from 15 leave 2; Remainder. 3 in 15 is contained 5 times; Quotient. The names and import of the numbers used in the reckoning, and of the respective answers should be made quite familiar to the pupil. That the Remainder and Subtrahend are equal to the Minuend : that either of two Factors may be made Multiplicand and the other Multiplier, and the Product be the same: that a Product being taken for a Dividend ami either .Factor tor Divisor, the Quotient will be the other Factor: and, that the Divisor Quotient multiplied together will reproduce the Dividend, are important to be thoroughly understood; they must be illustrated to the e c by actual operations with parcels o( tilings. It might be s.opped that here the need of instruction would cease. Rut we are far from having perfected a scholar when we have made these matters familiar to
him. The change of the size, number and j
name ot ihe parts ot quantities in Reduction to lit them for convenient use by some of the four rules is to be taught and illustrated. The consideration of things as thole things or as parts of things gives ofwi- ion for a distinction of numbers into Integers and Fractions. In estimating the quantity of any part or number of parts -f a tiling, two views are taken: how ?ntint parts are to be reckoned, and how targe each part is compared with the whole thing. Hence we hive the Numerator to ehow thc number of parts reckoned, and the Denominator to designate the relative
dollars of another, and paid 8 dollars in a-
nothcr. How many dollars had he left ? Scholars should be made to notice the import of the question and statement. All the numbers denote dollars so that all might be added if the disposal of all were alike. 7'irosums were received, and one paid out, by the same man: therefore the 18 and '2 arc to be added to find what he received; and the 8 to be subtracted from the amount, 30: for he took eijdit dollars from the amount received: or he separated the 30 into two parts, one to pay out, the other to be kept. The fundamental principles of aritmcticnl reasoning should be nt only stated but illustrated and frequently brought into practical application in showing and correcting the scholars' errors. It is not enough to tell them they are wrong and show them what is right, they should be made to see the application of the general principle to the particular example. LOCKK.

taken command of the irmy in person and much is expected from him. His star may once more gain the ascendant, and like Bonaparte, he relies on his star but in nothing else is he like that hero of an hundred battles. My own opinion is decidedly that Santa Anna must be beaten, and he will either fall in
I with the views of the pronunctados or be
put clown, btrong suspicions are enter tained, and rumors are already abroad, that tho Revolters and the President understand etch other; that he secretly favors their plan, and connives at their movements. The basis of the new plan is the creation of a Dictator with the powers of the Autocrat of all the Rusaias, and perhaps the title of the Execu
tive may, in a short time, be changed to King or Emperor, but we know the style or title matters iittle, so the Executive has the power. A rose would smell as sweet by any other name.'
