iEW AM) VALUABLE EOTTBiraZOn! fn "HK undersigned, .a resident of Vin.J.L cennes, Indiana, has invented and perfected anctr and valuable improvement in the application of ici.id, for the purpose
propelling machinery; lor which he ha received letters patent from the President of the United States, designated J. L. Col:i.vns Sr.LV-iiLGVLXTiiiG Horizontal Windmill. Occular demonstration is always tho most satisfactory and two mills are now erected in the borough of Vincenucs upon outline. A horizontal wheel is placed on a vertical shaft above tho house, with four or more wings or sails standing in an inclined position from the way tho windwheci is calculated to run, which throws a eradual weight of the wings on a civen scopi of the wind, and the wings bearing on ths wind, propel the wheel: it illustrates a combinational power of weight and win). with the principle ot gravity acting en wind. Each v;r.i performs one revolution on its pivot, to ono of the main wind' wheel. Each w in has a bearing of seveneighths of its circumference upon the i wind, and the one-eighth occasions little or resistance. The power is in ;roportion to tire weight gien, and a verv light weight is suilkient to drive the siiuole machinery of a run of millstones. Ab'ie or less power, if desired, can Le given while the mill is in operation, bv the lower pivot of each wing being placed on a sliding block, to which a rope is attached extending to main shaft pas&mg under a collar on hliaft at t!io rof of building, to a windlass on shaft inside thfj house. There is notliiu conjectural or Kitcd in tl jCt lt 13 f''d complicated in tho improvement mention-' on a principle of nature. and amply tested by practical experience. i he use and bencut to accrue, cannot I long remain limited; it will be found to recommend itsolt lor utility, cheapness certainty, saf 'ly and convenience, to the citizens of every quarter of the United State.
