rem fr Cincinnati Chronicle. THE nOOSIIEUOONS. The good citizens of our young sister of Indiana, arc pretty generally known throughout the west by the singular appellative of Huishers. The following rhymes, from a young Hoosheroon, conveys a very graphical picture of the Hooshcr life, on the iron tier of Indiana. Suppose, in riding through the West. A-stranger found a "lloosher's nest," In other words, a buck-eye cabin, Just big enough to hold Queen Mab in; Its situation low but airy. Was on the borders of a prairie, And fearing he might be benighted lie hailed the house and then alighted. The "Hoosher" met him at the dcor, Their salutations soon were o'er. He took the stranger's horse aside, A.nd to a sturdy sapling tied, Then having stripped the saddle cfT, He fed him at a sugar-trough. The stranger stooped to enter in, The entrance closing with a pin, And manifested a strong desire To seat him by the log-heap fire. Where half a dozen Hoosheroons,

With mush and milk, tincups and spoons, White heads, bare feet, and dirty faces, Seemed much inclined to keep their places. But Madam, anxious to display Her rough and undisputed sway, Her offering to the ladder led. And cuffed the youngsters up to bed. Invited shortly to partake Of venison, milk and Jonny-cake, The stranger made a hearty meal. And glances round the room would steal. One side was lined with divers garments. The other spread with skins of "varments," Dried pumpkins oer head were strung, Where venison hams in plenty hung; Tvo rifles placed above the door, Three dogs lay stretched upon the floor In short the domicil was rife. With specimens of "Hoosher" life. The host who centred his affections On game and range and quarter sections, Discoursed his weary guest for hours, Till Somnus' ever potent powers, Of sublunary cares bereft 'em. No matter how the story ended The application I intend d Is from the famous Scottish poet. Who seemed to feel as well as know it, That "buirdly ehiels and clever hizzies, Are bred in sic away as this is "

Oh, ye 'who jest at scars that never felt a wound, picture to yourself a be ing, captive and desolate, gnawed by fa-

mine, Dreaming me airot pestilence, associated only with the dying and the dead. But see, there appears the com mander, like an angel of mercy, hating healing under his wings in the shape of pardon, protection, food, raiment, gold. But mark yetue price of all those benefits. 'Twas like the devil tempting the Son of Man of old. All these will I give yc, but ye must abandon the cause of American liberty,' said my lord admiral to poor Byrne, when the latter had crawled about the deck, and confronted the master of his fate. Heorit, Ameri cans, treasure it in your hearts, aye, and write it in your books, that future ages may read it, and admire the cry of brave Byrne in the prison ship at Charleston, and amid the ranks of death at Eutaw
