From the Providence Artisan. THE HONEST MAN.

Uncle Josey had thc reputation of a very honest man; and so highly was he

famed for his rare virtue, that 'as honest

as Uncle Josey," bocamc a proverb. If Uncle Josey could be once brought to a sticking point in a bargan, and agteed to p y a cartain sura at a certain lime, there was no danger of a failure on his part Sunsuinc or cloudy, rain, hail, or snow, hot or cold, made no difTt encc with him, the old $rey mare was saddled and bridl ed, and punctual to thc vpry moment, her honest master was sure to be at the des igned spot, cash in hand, to fulfil his engagement. But, in return, he alwa s ex pected a compliment to his punctuality, and if it did not ccme voluntarily, would always "fish for it," as the saying is by intimating, especially if the vteather or travelling were unfavorable. "I did'nt l;now that you would really expect me, but I always make it pint to fulfil my promises." Uncle Josey, like most other men, lik Ml to turn a good article at pood account;

and his reputed honesty found a fine market, and was sold to a great profit. His celebrity became so great that no one thought of questioning him in aught he said. If he had a sheep for sale, it would command three dollars in market, though his neighbor, for one appar e-ntly as valuable, would find i difficult to obtain more than two, I3ut Unclf. Josey said ztis sheep was richly worm a dollar more than his neighbor's, and though it was impossible for the purchaser to say why or wherefore, yet Uncle Josey was an honest man, he would not lie, ar.d the purchaser was satisfied. It was no with every other commodity the honest old r,oul had to sell. It was v. orth ibout twenty five per cent, more thtn body's else, though he might have purchased it of a neighbor not half n hour before at a reduced price, as an article cf inlcuor quality. Yet a great improvem-r.t took place in passing it tht ough his hands, and he would generally tax the buyer pretty roundly for his

And all this because Uncle Josey was an honest msn, and sold his corn at ninopence, and po (atoes at ten cents per bushel tnoic than ny bodv else, a J In this way, though he didn't make a practice of hiring out money, and enjoined secresy on every borrower, lest hshould be trouhled by others, whomight solicit a like kindness, did my Uncle Josey "oblige" most of his neighbors And after his death people rolled up their eyes and gaped with astonishment, whei

they learned the nun. her and amount nl notes he had left behind him; and true lo their former opinions, they cuo'gizd his name for the innumerable kivdtut. he had done, as his notet testified, a'-.d to this dry use the proverb, and teach i to their children, "as honest as Uncle Jcsey."

SINGULAR CIRCUMSTANCE. A person who had made a considerable fortune in Philadelphia ds a butcher, went on board of one of the last ships from Amsterdam, which had a tiunber of German rcdemptioners, for the purpose of purchasing one to assist him in his business. Af'er axamining the physi ognomy of sccral of the passengers, without being able to please himself, his attention was arrested by the tranquil and composed countenance of a man rathct advanced in years, but with much appearance of strength and activity. Not less pleased with thc tcr.or of the con versation of the German than his cxter ior, he described the purpose for which he wanteil a servant, and obtained the
