under tiie command of Gen. 1) dg- and the
main b-.dy of the Ifdians, after a close pur f iit of one huadred miles. The. Indians it appears were n. thing their way towel ds the Misissrpi ,with the intention of crossing, but bv ii:g closely pursued they were compelled to i n line in the direction of the Wisconsin, wita a view of taking refuse n an i-dand in th t river, or of crossing, fust the Wisconsin rii;d tluis train tiaie survicieat to make a safe
retreat across the Miisippi. They were however ovci taken at thvr "isconsin, and after an hour's fighting were completely cb -leatd, and no doubt woull have been all cu! to irces had not the darkness of night enabled tliem to esrape. The army is still in pui s lit, and from the starved condition of the Indians, they will doubtless be again overtaken. The following letter from Gen. Dodge to Capt. Lnomis, will give the particulars cf the fight: Camp Wisconsin, July 22d, 1832. 5 Wc met the enemy yesterday near the Wisconsin river, anil opposite the old Sock Village, after a close pursuit of near 100 Miles. Our loss was one man killed and
citrht wounded; from the scalps taken by the Winnebagnes, as well as those taken by the whites, and the Indians carried from the field of battle, we must have killed about .0 of them, the number of wounded not iinown.; we can only judge from the number killed, that many were wounded. From their crippled situation, I think we must overtake them, unless they descend the Wisconsin by water. If you could place a field -piece immediately on the Wisconsin th.it would command the river, you might prevent their escape by water. Genl. At!:iason will arrive at the Blue Mounds on he 24th with the Regulars and a detachment of mounted men. I will cross the Wisconsin to-morrow, and should the enemy retreat by land, he will probably attempt crossing some twenty miles above Prairie duChieu; in th t event, the mounted men would want some boats for transmit ting their aims, ammunition and provision. If vou could procure for us some Mackinaw boats in tb.i event, as well as same provisions and supplies, it w ould greatly facilitate our views. Excuse gnat haste. 1 am with great respect, Your ob't serv't II. DODGE, Col. Com. Michigan Mounted Volunteers.
