V.CKXNi:.s, MAY P, I.SW. ICR Til E VV 1.51 Lit: SU. ,Vr. Editor: An anonymous writer in the Vincenncs Gazette of the 42lst of April, lias taken upon hirnelf to give She lie direct to an articlii which appeared in t lie Western Sun the week be tore, cbarirr- senator Hendrhks with having franked mt3 thf the State of Indiana a lanis number of the famous address lately issued by tKe "national republican convention held at Baltimore, for the purpose of president jivikinjr. Now, sir, I will not descend to notice the tirade of abuse which this volunteer witucs, to exculpate senator Ilondrirfcs, lias exhibited in his notable article in def n?e of his m.i:?fr. Put if the gentleman charged with this abvse of the franking privilege will dare to deny the same, the writer of the article so charging him, U dcs himself to the public to support the charge Lv tlu most irrrfrajrible proof. AN IX 1)1 AN! AN. . JO 1 HE PUBLIC. The follovviiir; prescription maybe regarded as a sure and infallable remedy jlir White Swelling, (commonly called,) as has been ascertained from frequent experiments which is here submitted for the benefit of those who may be assailed by this most afflicting disease: Take equal quantities of hog's lard, soft soap, bees wax and pine rosin, put them into an open vessel, ptace the ves "sd over a gentle fire, and let it remain for an hour and a half, constantly stirring until the several ingredients be well mingled, so as to form a saKe of common consistency, which may be ascertained by exposing some ol it to the action of the atniosphcre; and when found to be properly mixed it will be tcaily lor use MODE OF APPLICATION. Take a fl,x linen cloth &ulliciently worn to have become soft end pliant, and cf such size as to cover the entire sore, spread upon it so much of the salve as.o cnat it entirely, before the application be made, sprinUle upon it pulverised sulphur, so as to prevent the salve and flesh from coining immediately in contact; else the skin iU be taken off. This plaster Tiuist be removed every morning, and tome fresh salve added. After the third application of this plaster another must be procured and prepared, as before directed. The patient should continue to wear this preparation until the sore becomes e.nti ely healed. The frequency of the dressing and applications when the sore begins to heal, rn3y be deicrtiiiued upon at discretion. IK Frcm a Clay f:cfier. We have, wi-.hin 43 hours, (says the Richmond Whig.) lead Major Lewis' and his partner, Mr. Currins defence of their conduct in the lease of the salt tpring from the Chickasaws, assailed in Corgres6, and in the Tcltgiaph, and fnl it, to cur apprehension, entirely sa lUafctory. As we contributed to circu late the accusation against Lewis, this .acknowledgmeU appears to be due to fair play. The New-York American speaks of Gen. Houston's trial, as a ridiculous af fair. The Maryl.'oder say: "We think the House of Representatives h.s not pursued such a course cn Houston's trial as comports with its own dignity, or the expectations of the people." It has been, at times difficult to decide what object ihe House had in view whether they ere investigating the character of the cl heJ fraud, trying Houston for a con tempt, ascertaining the extent and duration of the flagellation, or inquiring into Mr. Stat. berry's character for veracity. The w hole aHVtr seems to have been ridi culous enough and it . is now cbvir-us that Mr. Sianbei ry will be the principal UtTc:er, in peracn and in reputation. Storm. On Monday the 7th inst, this place was tinted by a violent sterm, which came fiom the Southwest, and lasted about five rr.inu'es with astonishing violence and subsidec1; but not with out Icftvinj; behind it mark ot its power, sevcr.ii doors asid windows in this place were blown from the houses, and the new brick building owned by Mr. Johnson cn the north ide of the public square W3s much injured, the west pable end was blown in, and ten cr twelve feci of ihe east uall was bursted out.
