In the steamboat arrivals in the paper of this day, is the Tippecanoe, from New Orleans, and ia the second bout arriving here, freighted at Orleans directly fortius river. Except a small portion of her cargo f r thi place, she was freighted for Ter-re-Iiaite.

which the whole moral world, and the

great fabric of social happiness depend."

And vet Mr. Editor, 1 find your last

Western Sun the organ of such slander. A giddy, inconsiderate youth might.

perhaps, be excused in this case: but you

are an old man, a parent and an editor!!!

I must believe, however, 0u meant no

thing by copying the self-condemned ex

tract from the Mechanic s Free Press, but to reprimand those" who equally disgrace our government, and our holy religion.

To be more particular, the extract allu

del to; published in the first page of last

week s Sun, says the clergy are "wealthy

that "Bible Societies, Missionary Socie-; ties, Education Societies, a id Sunday School Unions, are fraudulent combinations;' that a vague allusion to a non-existing Bank, proves we are on the prink of a "cruel vassalage," "an ecclesiastical tyranny," in which will be "rivetted the chains,1 which overthrow and subjugate the rights of men in foreijn nations. Now sir, the iine is not clearly drawn here between the use and abuse of religion. But the writer, without the shadow of proof to sustain him, and in order, seemingly, to glut his malignity against the cause which Newton reverenced, casts an indiscriminate censure on tlve good and the bad, and on true and false religion.

Did you intentionally admit this poison

into your paper? I cannot think so. I shall now conclude in the following

words of Lord Littleton, which seem to

have been written expressly for this pur

pose -

"The root of these evils, (and of tho-c imaginary ones named in the Mechanic's Free Press,) you well know, was false religion; but you strike at the truth. Iloaven and hell arc not more different than the system of faith I defend, and that which produced the horrors of which you speak. Why would you so fallaciously confound them together, that it requires more judgment, and much mere diligent attention than ordinary readers have, to separate them again, and to make the proper distinctions? Thi3, indeed, is the

great art of the most celebrated freethink

ers: they recommend themselves to warm

and ingenuous minds by lively strokes of wit, and by arguments really strong, against superstition, enthusiasm, anil priestcraft. But, at the same time, they insidiously throw the colours of these .upon the fair face of true religion, and

dress her out in their garb with a malignant intention to render her odious or despicable to those who have not penetration enough to discern the impious fraud.

Some of them may have thus deceived themselves as well as others. Yet it is certain, no book that ever was written by

the most acute of these gentlemen, is so

repugnant to priestcraft, to spiritual ty

ranny, to all absurd superstitions, to all that can disturb or injure society, as that

gospel they so much affect to despise.
