The o' ject rf this w .i k is, to furnish, in nnnihers. to !ie rising iionrarirn, a .Mmiatare Kncxicl'.haciHa. (i :,c 7al Cabinet, em bracing an epitome ot the most interesting topics of the a;e. In carrying cut this design, three important principles will be constantly in view: First To select from the great mass of human knowledge timt only which is useful or cmarncntat. Second To condense matter and language as fir aspraetir.i utility will admit. F'tvd 'Yctm.stnric.tizr and arrange the whole in 'such manner, that each and every portion may he turned to at pleasure, without the iKsj.il alphabetic order of the several articles, or the trouble of a common index. The scanty limits here allowed forbid even the enumeration ol the topics upon which, it is believed, the future pages of this work will be usefully occupied a simple hint at its or igin and present design must therefore suffice. The example of the bee, in drawing from an almost intinite variety of substances, that only which is adapted to its . i ticular w ants and mode of life, to the exclusion of all superfluous or extraneous matter, and the ingenious method pursued in arranging its small, tho' precious, stores, for future use. suggested the idea of a small periodical, of which this is a specimen. Though the primary aim rf the w-ork will be, to extract, abstract, and concentrate, within convenient limits, that which is evidently useful still, w hatcver is crnamental in literature, science, and the arts, will not be overlooked. Nor will any pain be spared, w hile endeav orine; to draw within these narrow limits the wisdom of the present arid the experience of the past, to excite in the minds of our readers a thirst for all that is intrinsically valuable, even beyond the scope f this periodical particularly by f.ivourable refer ence to more v luminous publications, to which this will seive as an index. Another prominent ohiect will he. to furn'sb the best practical svstem for accumu1;tt,I'S' independently of this work, appro priute mental stores, for the varied purpo ses ot PL-, in whatever department it may fall. '1 he first few- number will communi cate a practical knowledge of that labour j and time-saving art. Short-Hand; after which they will exhibit in their progress, a mod, I place bock, to be copied, or imitated, as rirciinistancts shall justify, by all who approve the plan. As a matter rf very great convenience to the reader, especially fr future refercr.ee. the contents of each p-ige will be denoted by p'-orninent words in the margin to which marginal words, a general index may be fra med upon the principle of Locke's Common riace bok which is fullv explained in its proper place. This will furnish to every reader an infallible key to every part which he may wis.li to re-examine and, at the s.tnie time, suggest to the aspirant after Lnn!i'(p ......,..! ,f .1 U"S' ana lhen proceeds to write d lily, uron the plan a!oUt to be sujrtrv sted, can acquire more useful knowledge in one year, than it would be possible for him toobtarn in three years, by any other method that has ever been devised. For illustration; two individuals, in every respect equal, take up a volume of SCO
w 7
p8 the ne hurries through it, in the usual way, and lays it down to be neglected and forcottcn; the other takes time while
he read, to deliberate upon each chapter. section, or topic: and while it is fresh in the mind, enters in his place bock, agreeably to the plan about to be communicated, the substance, or, at least, the names cf important subjects, and the pages where they are found. Upon the completion cf the volume, the latter will have drawn out, perhaps upon five pages, a summary cf the 500. For most purposes, a perusal of this summary w ill be as benchcrai and sanuctory, as a xe-peiu-sal of the whole volume, though requirirg hut 100th part as muc'.i time, li ning these five pages then, as a general brief, or wdejr to the volume, the contents may be referred to, when occasion requires, without loss ot time; and all the important facts familiar ised, without the drudgery cf an entire reperusal. Need the question then be asked, which of the two will make the greatest improvement, the one practising this plan, or the one neglecting it? The result is too obvious to demand a question, or merit a leplv. The following papes may be looked upon as the brief notes c f one practising up u this plan they present a variety of prominent ftcts aid dates, that cam. ot fail to call up much other valuable matter not expres- j sed, which, but for thtse notes, cuuld never i ' J .:-u S .1, .
