discharged her cargo, and left on the 8th, for Louisville. I have understood she had on board considerable loading for Terre-IIaute, that the captain of the boat became alarmed on account of the river falling, and refused to proceed up. He could not have been much acquainted with the Wabash, or must have been badly advised, the river beinir yet at a good navigable stage, and another boat hourly expected. T cannot consent to bandy epithets with the writer in the (iazettc of last week, over the signature of 'National Republican,' and should not have noticed the article at all, but f r my correspondent, who signs himself '"One of the Meeting," whose article i must decline publishing for the present. In it, however, he declares the number of persons attending the meeting referred to, did not amount to fifteen. In the first p ie of this day's paper, I bave given at length, the decision of the President Jmhie of this Circuit, on rejec-! ting a witness, in Monroe county. As to the legality of the decision, not beinjj a lawyer m self, I shall give no opinion but I shall take the liberty to say, that the after proceedings of some persons, in making erTigics and hanging them, was disgraceful in the extreme, and the names of those concerned should be held up to public contempt. At a meeting held in Carlisle, Sullivan county, according to previous notice, by the friends of the present administration, for die purpose of electing delegates to the Jackson convention, to be held at Indianapolis on the second Monday in December next, col. John Benefield was called to the chair, and Benjamin Wolf, appointed secretary. On motion, unanimously Resol 'red, That George B )on, Isaac Ong, John W. Davis, and Benjamin Turman, be, and they are hereby appointed Delegates to represent said county in the aforesaid convention. J. BENEFIELD, Chmn. B. Wolf, Sccty. rito-U Tin: LoriiAXA ADVERTISE, OF OCTOUER GENERAL REMARKS.Our climate has re-assumed its usual aspect for the he year. The weapresent season ot the year ther during the last week has been clear, Irv. warm, and pleasant, in short, such as we generally experience during the autumn. We have many arrivals, foreign, coastwise, and inland, yet business is by no means brisk. Prices continue nearly the same in the most important articles of merchandize, and we have consequently few changes to notice. The good health of our city continues, and we may now consider it perfectly free from danger of any epidemics. It is true the hospitals still contain a lare number of patients, but very few are thought to be dangerouslv ill. COTTON has been sold this week our quotations. The quality of the nev Mm crop, so far as we have had an opportunity to jude, is inferior to the last. The highest sale within our knowledge, of new crop, was made at i)J cts. A small quantity of the old has commanded 10 cents. Choice Cotton readily commands that price, and is much sought for. In regard to the amount of the next crops, the latest information confirms our previous opinion. There will be a large deficiency in the product of Louisiana and Mississippi. The sales of the week inelude about 1000 bales of all description. TOBACCO. Some saies have been made, but only to a small amount; the article is wanted, and little of it remains in first hands the transactions of the week co not exceed "200 hogsheads, at present quotations; some holders ask higher prices, but we believe, all things considered, (hat our quotations are correct. The stock on hand is not considerable, and the arrivals do not correspond with tHe demand. A small advance in price may be autici-j pated. 4 SUGAR AND MOLASSF.S.-We have not altered the prices of either of these articles, and give no quotation for Suar in the ci, because no large sales have been m ule, and we do not wih to publish retail prices. Sugar has certainly improved, but as the transactions are not to a l irge amount, we make no change in quo tations. e are happy to state that our last information from the country ropeet in; the growing crops, is favourable; an 1 if the present good weather continues, the prKiuri win oe oe.iei uiui we aimcina- .!..-. -...II I. . . t. . . . ... ted. Bat even under the most favourable circumstances, the amount of Suar pro - dueed in this State, will fail thort of 1 a.t years cron. i FLOUR continues the san me as noticed in our last, the arrivals hcin ; anoui equat to the demand. A I a rue proportion dov not pass inspection, and is taken by the bakers fir immediate use. Purchases for export are uot made to any extent, foreign markets offering no inducements to dilators. W'e continue our quotations, with the remark, that this market would be unfavorably affected by larije arrivals. jtnmal BACON AND BEEF are dull at for mer prices. CORN, shelled in sacks, is very dull. A few exports have been made recently, land the former large stock is decreasing; in the ear, it h retailed by the barrel en the Levee, at our quotations. COFFEE is becoming scarce, and advancing in price. A large sale has been made at present rates, and some holders demand an advance. The last news from the Islands respecting the crop?, represent the prospects to be very unfavorable. HAY arrives from the north and east in small quantities, and is sold on the Levee without difficulty, at S7i cents, a SI per 100 lbs LEAD. No sales have been made of late, and the greater part of the last arrivals cf Pig Lead, has been shipped to the north. The article is not much inquired for, and little is offered for sale. LIME commands ready sale, and is much wanted; new arrivals are anxiously looked for. OIL of all descriptions is scarce, and readily finds purchasers at present prices. Linseed was verv scarce for several months, and is now by no means plenty. Lamp Oil of good quality is wanted th article is now more jrenerallv used in this country than formerly. HICE has found no change in price. The demand is good, and the market not verv well supplied. CANDLES arc scarce, both of Tallow and Spermaceti, but the qualities sent to this city, are so very different, that it is not easy to give a correct quotation. We make no change this week. BUTTER. There is none good in market, either northern cr western, and prices arc variable. CHEESE is much wanted, both for city and country consumption. Very little is offered for sale. LOOK OUT ! ! The person who took from before the door of the printer a few days aw, a PAINTED BUCKET, is requested to save himself trouble bv returning it. TAKE NOTICE.
