refutation, as be lmdonc to the calurn.
-Very rcspectlully, your obedient 8crt. JOHN ROBU. Col. Geo. Mitchell, EUton, Md. Wamiingtom, June 3d, 1831. De&r Sir Your note requesting me to state, ai tar as my recollection will serve, what transpired at the President's, during the evening which some d our preaches spent there, while our Conference was silting in this city, is received. I have always studiously avoided connecting my name with any politicalquestions: but 1 do not conceive that 1 shall, in complying with your request, transcend the limit which I prescribed to myself on the subject, as truth in rcgaid to facts is the object. It was generally understood by the Members ol the Con ierence (for no formal invitation was given) that the President would, on a certain evening, be glad to see as many cf them ts might think Fit to call, and that lie should expect them to take tea with
him, and if there were any of them whose convenience it might not suit to call on that evening, he should b- happy to see them at any other time during their stayin the city. Under this impression, from thirty five to torty of us went. We were received by the President with mai keel politeness and affection, and spent withj liim and two or three of his friends whol vrere present on the occasion, a most agreeable hour. Not a word during otir1 stay, did I hear on the subject of poll tics, or the approaching Presidential e lection, nor do I believe the subject was named, or even hinted at by an individual present. Trr o or ihree ol the preachers wh happened to be seated near the Pic ident conversed with him in turn, but !heir conversation, as I afterwards tmd rstood, was principally, if not entire It, of a religious kind After tea, prayer was proposed The Kev J Reed Sen. officiated; and immediately on rising from our knees we totk an afTetionate leave of the Piesident End his friends, each carrying with him, so far as I am able to learn, a high sense of the Piesident's truly polite and friendly deportment on the occasion I heard sometime since ot the truly singular account of this visit, which had appeared in the ''Philadelphia Sun,' but
never met with it till about three days
ago Surely the correspondent of the Sun, who furnished this article, must be a genius of no common mould; lor no one extraordinary genius, could. I think, crowd so many statements, fialfiably alee, into so small a (.pace, and gie to theiM at the same lime the appearance cf truths In tact, there is but one truth s'.a' d in the whn artice, and that is, that wt hfd player before we retired I am, dea si vmirs with real esteem, J ! TS M HANSON Rev Jonv Horn? From fie Baltimore Gazette.
